A high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTS) DC application has advantages such as the ultimately lower loss, more compact dimensions, and large capacity compared to AC application. In order to optimize the insulation design of a HTS DC machines, it is important to understand the high voltage insulation and materials at cryogenic temperature. Polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP) has been widely used as an insulating material for HTS AC machines. However, the fundamental data under DC voltage have not been revealed satisfactorily until now. In this paper, we will discuss mainly on the breakdown and dielectric characteristics of PPLP in liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$). The polarity effects of DC and impulse voltage were studied by using the semi-rod to cylindrical electrode. The volume resistivity of PPLP in $LN_2$ was studied. Also, the space charge distribution at room temperature was studied. However, it is necessary to study this topic at cryogenic temperature in the near future.
Breakthrough analysis has widely been explored for the dynamic separation of gaseous mixtures in porous materials. In general, breakthrough experiments measure the components of a flowing gas when a gaseous mixture is injected into a column filled with an adsorbent material. In this paper, we report on the design and fabrication of a breakthrough curve measurement device to study the dynamic adsorptive separation of hydrogen isotopologues in porous materials. Using the designed system, an experiment was conducted involving a 1:1 mixture of hydrogen and deuterium passed through a column filled with zeolite 13X (1 g). At room temperature, both hydrogen and deuterium were adsorbed in negligible amounts; however, at a temperature of 77 K, deuterium was preferentially adsorbed over hydrogen. The selectivity was different from that in the existing literature due to the different sample shapes, measurement methods, and column structures, but was at a similar level to that of cryogenic distillation (1.5).
A high temperature superconducting (HTS) DC cable is ideal for transmitting large blocks of electrical power over a long distance. However, it must be designed to operate reliably within the constraints of the electrical systems. Therefore, a study of the electrical insulation is important to develop a HTS DC cable because it is operated in a cryogenic high voltage environment. This paper discusses the dielectric constructions of the cable and summarizes the experimental results on the DC and impulse dielectric characteristics of the insulation material. in sheet form and mini-model cable configuration. This shows how to design such insulation to be operated reliably. These studies are essential for the insulation design of a HTS DC cable operated in cryogenic environment.
This paper presents apparent thermal conductivity of various powder at different vacuum levels for cryogenic insulation. Four kinds of powder insulator are examined by using boil-off calorimetry at pressure range from 50 Torr to 3 mTorr. The first material is perlite which is widely used in cryogenic application. Microsphere is the second one that is recently proposed as a replacement powder for liquid hydrogen storage tanks. It is a hollow sphere made of silica with the diameter in the order of 10 to $100{\mu}m$. Popped rice and polystyrene beads are also selected as candidates for powder insulation even though they are polymers. With their porous elliptic and spherical configuration and light density, they demonstrate fairly good thermal insulation performance at pressure range from 50 Torr to 3 mTorr. According to the experimental investigation in this paper, microsphere and polystyrene beads possess promising insulation characteristic as powder insulators and further study is desired.
In the response to an increasing demand for electrical energy, much effort aimed to develop and commercialise HTS power equipments is going on around the world. For the development, it is necessary to establish the dielectric technology in $LN_2$. Hence many types of dielectric tests should be carried out to understand the dielectric phenomena at cryogenic temperature and to gather various dielectric data. Among the many types dielectric tests, the barrier effect were conducted with the simulated electrode after analysing the insulating configuration of the pancake coil type HTS transformer. The influence of a barrier on the dielectric strength was measured according to the size and the position of the barrier. It was shown that the effectiveness, the ratio of the breakdown voltage in presence of barrier to the voltage without barrier, is highest when the barrier is placed at the needle electrode side. And the barrier effect was not depend on the electrode array. The life time to breakdown with decreasing the applied voltage was increased remarkably having wide error band but the shape parameter in Weibull distribution was almost constant.
In this study, CT specimen were prepared from Pressure Vessel Steel which was used for pressure vessel plates for room and low temperature service. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room and low temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, -3$0^{\circ}C$, -6$0^{\circ}C$, -8$0^{\circ}C$, -10$0^{\circ}C$ and -12$0^{\circ}C$ and in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 and 0.3 by means of opening mode displacement. At the constant street ratio, the threshold stress intensity factor range ΔK$_{th}$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth(Region I) and stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth(Region II) was increased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region. The straight line slope relation of logarithm do/dN -ΔK in RegionII, that is, the fatigue crack growth exponent m increased with descending temperature at the constant stress ratio. It was assumed that the fatigue crack growth rate do/dN is rapid in proportion to descending temperature in Region IIand the cryogenic-brittleness greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.e.greatly affect a material with decreasing temperature.
In the response to the demand for electrical energy, much effort aimed to develop and commercialize high temperature superconducting (HTS) power equipments has been made around the world. In Korea, companies and universities are developing a power distribution and transmission class HTS transformer that is one of the 21st century superconducting frontier projects. The composite winding of transmission class HTS transformer is concentrically arranged H1-L-H2 from center. H1 is continuous disk type, L is layer type and H3 is continuous disk type. For the development of transmission HTS transformer with composite winding, the cryogenic insulation technology should be established. We have been analyzed insulation composition and investigated electrical characteristics such as breakdown of $LN_2$, barrier, kapton films, surface flashover on FRP in $LN_2$. We are going to compare with measured each value and apply the value to most suitable insulating design of the HTS transformer.
The objective of this study is to analyze the mechanical properties of plywood used as a thermal insulating material for LNG CCS (Liquefied Natural Gas, Cargo Containment System). It is created by bonding an odd number of parallel and perpendicular direction for preventing contraction and expansion of wood. Also plywood is widely used as LNG CCS insulating material because of its durability, light weight and high stiffness. Since LNG CCS is loaded with liquid cargo, the impact load by sloshing during operation and the wide temperature range (room temperature, low temperature, cryogenic temperature) exposed during loading, unloading should be considered. The thickness of the plywood which is used for the membrane type MARKIII was selected as the thickness of the test specimen. In this present study, plywood is analyzed by the fracture behavior and mechanical properties of plywood by temperature and grain direction. In addition, it is necessary to analyze the fracture shape and predict the fracture strain by using regression model because the critical load may cause cracks inside the tank, which may affect the leakage of cryogenic liquid.
The purpose of this study was to establish a numerical model of polyurethane foam (PUF) to simulate the dynamic response and strength of membrane-type Liquefied natural gas (LNG) Cargo containment system (CCS) under the impact load. To do this, initially, the visco-plastic behavior of PUF was characterized by testing the response of the PUF to the impact loads with various strain rates as well as PUF densities at room temperature and at cryogenic conditions. A PUF material model was established using the test results of the material and the FE analysis. To verify the validation of the established material model, simulations were performed for experimental applications, e.g., the dry drop test, and the results of FEA were compared to the experimental results. Based on this comparison, it was found that the dynamic response of PUF in dry drop tests, such as the reaction force and fracture behaviors, could be simulated successfully by the material model proposed in this study.
