The number of accidents occurring at railway crossings is less than the accidents on other sections of roads but they cause enormous socio-economic damages. The geometric aspects of the railway crossing have to allow the drivers to recognize the crossings and take precautions against collisions. Therefore, ensuring visibility for the vehicle approaching the railway crossing is necessary for safe operation of the crossing. However, as there is little research related to railway crossing visibility in Korea. validating visibility and maintaining visibility based on the validation is badly needed. This research develops a visibility validation model to support improving visibility and to reduce accidents at railway crossings to improve safety for the crossing users.

This paper presents a study on the mechanical behavior of buried pipelines crossing faults using experimental and numerical methods. A self-made soil-box was used to simulate normal fault, strike-slip fault and oblique slip fault. The effects of some important parameters, including the displacement and type of fault, the buried depth and the diameter of pipe, on the deformation modes and axial strain distribution of the buried pipelines crossing faults was studied in the experiment. Furthermore, a finite element analysis (FEA) model of spring boundary was developed to investigate the performance of the buried pipelines crossing faults, and FEA results were compared with experimental results. It is found that the axial strain distribution of those buried pipelines crossing the normal fault and the oblique fault is asymmetrical along the fault plane and that of buried pipelines crossing the strike-slip fault is approximately symmetrical. Additionally, the axial peak strain appears near both sides of the fault and increases with increasing fault displacement. Moreover, the axial strain of the pipeline decreases with decreasing buried depth or increasing ratios of pipe diameter to pipe wall thickness. Compared with the normal fault and the strike-slip fault, the oblique fault is the most harmful to pipelines. Based on the accuracy of the model, the regression equations of the axial distance from the peak axial strain position of the pipeline to the fault under the effects of buried depth, pipe diameter, wall thickness and fault displacement were given.

Railroad crossing crashes are fewer than road crashes, but with regard to crash severity, they can be serious injury crashes. There should be, therefore, enormous efforts to increase the safety of railroad crossings. The objective of this paper is to identify and understand factors associated with railroad crossing crashes. Statistical models are used to examine the relationships between crossing accidents and geometric elements of crossings. The results show the Poisson model is the most appropriate method for the crossing accidents, because overdispersion was not observed. This study identifies seven significant factors associated with railroad crossing crashes through the main and variant models. With regard to explanatory factors on crossing safety, the total traffic volume, daily train volume, presence of commercial area around crossings, distance of train detector from crossings, time duration between the activation of warning signals and gates, crossing types, and speed hump were found to affect the safety of railroad crossings.
Circuit breakers are a crucial factor in ensuring the safety of a Direct Current (DC) grid. One type of DC circuit breaker, the Z-source DC circuit breaker (ZCB), uses a thyristor, which is a type of semiconductor switch. In the event of a fault in the circuit, the ZCB isolates the fault by generating a zero crossing current in the thyristor. The thyristor quickly and actively isolates the fault while generating a zero crossing current, but thyristor switch cannot control turn-off and the allowable current is lower than the current of the mechanical switch. Therefore, it is best to use a mechanical switch with a high allowable current capacity that is capable of on/off control. Due to the slow reaction time of mechanical switches, they may not isolate the fault during the zero crossing current time interval created by the existing circuit. In this case, the zero crossing current time can be increased by using the property that hinders the rapid change in the current of the inductor. This paper will explore whether adding system inductance to increase the zero crossing current time interval is a solution to this problem. The simulation of changing inductor and capacitor (LC) of the circuit is repeated to find an optimal change in the zero crossing current time according to the LC change and provides an inductor and capacitor range optimized for a specific load. The inductor and capacitor range are expected to provide optimization information in the form LC values for future applications of ZCB's using a mechanical switch.

It has reported that a median bus-stop island on an exclusive median bus lane (EMBL) has shortened a crossing distance unit, encouraged a pedestrian's illegal crossing, and increased the number of accidents in the area. This study presents (1) the analysis of inappropriate pedestrian crossing patterns collected on exclusive median bus corridors and (2) the estimated performance of safety barriers restraining the occurrence of those. Total 19,649 pedestrian crossing data collected at the 'Sookmyung-university' median bus-stop, and the inappropriate pedestrian crossing patterns among those were grouped in terms of time and space violations. Physical safety barriers restraining illegal pedestrian crossings were considered as an alternative, and its performance in safety was quantified through microscopic simulation with conflict analyses by using surrogate safety assessment model. The findings suggest the number of conflicts reduced be 24.9 percentages compared to the one of the present condition when the physical safety barriers are placed at each of the eight ends of the EMBL pedestrian crossing.
Roads are widely accepted to be as a major cause of habitat fragmentation. The wildlife road-crossing structure is one of the most acceptable alternatives among the solutions to provide connectivity between patches isolated by roads. We investigated noise disturbance, vegetation structure and wildlife crossing and habitation at a wildlife road-crossing structure located at the Jingmaei-Pass in Incheon, Korea, to monitor and evaluate its conservation value and ecological performance and to propose measures for their adaptive management. From the result of noise measurement, the noise disturbance from the road traffic was not properly blocked out at the wildlife crossing structure. The survey results of vegetation structure showed that the early-successional plant species such as Ambrosia trifida, Erigeron annuus, Pueraria lobata, Rosa multiflora invaded widely on the crossing structure. An efficient management of the vegetation should be necessarily considered for the facilitation of vegetation succession and the improvement of animal habitat. The crossing structure was used by limited mammal species: Apodemus agrarius, Nyctereutes procyonoides, Mogera wogura and Sciurus vulgaris coreae as the results of the monitoring using footprints and closed-circuit television. In conclusion, The Jingmaei-Pass wildlife crossing structure is unable to function properly as a biological corridor because of the interference of noise and flourishing disturbed vegetation. Therefore, proper alternatives are required for improving animal habitats and mobile environments to enhance the ecological function of a wildlife corridor.

The pedestrian green time is usually long at wide width intersections. This sometimes causes the increase of delay on the whole intersection because of long cycle length and thus small g/C ratio on some direction. In this paper, to improve these problems, staggered pedestrian crossing was evaluated on the vehicular and pedestrian aspects. The results were gained by using both TRANSYT-7F and VISSIM model. The vehicle control delay of the staggered pedestrian crossing was estimated to be decreasing than that of the general pedestrian crossing by 14.9% to 85.6%. The pedestrian average delay of two pedestrian crossing systems was examined by analytical method and VISSIM. According to the analytical method there was no significant difference between each pedestrian crossing system. The pedestrian delay of staggered pedestrian crossing was from 13.4% to 22.3% than the general pedestrian crossing by VISSIM. In conclusion, the staggered pedestrian crossing was more effective than general pedestrian crossing for both the vehicle and the pedestrian. However this conclusion was resulted from micro simulation where traffic volume condition, v/c, was from 0.8 to 1.1.

In the case of a system that detects and controls the phase of an alternating voltage, the analog control method compensates the phase offset part by filtering for the detected phase and applies it to the control. However, in the digital control method, precise control cannot be achieved due to an error between the operating frequency of the microprocessor or the microcontroller and the input phase time when controlled using such phase detection. In general, when the method used is a certain time, the accumulated error is compensated and adjusted at random. To solve this problem, a method of detecting a zero point in real time and compensating for the operating frequency of the microprocessor is needed. Therefore, the research to be performed in this paper to reduce these errors and apply them to precise digital control is as follows. 1) Research on how to implement Zero Crossing Detection algorithm through simulation modeling to compensate the zero point to match the operating frequency through detection. 2) A study on the method of detecting zero points in real time through the Zero Crossing Detection design using a microcontroller and compensating for the operating frequency of the microprocessor. 3) A study on the estimation of the rotor position of BLDC motors using the Zero Crossing Detection circuit.
