In this paper, we have developed numerical model for particulated flow through narrow slit using Eulerian-Granular method. Commercial software (FLUENT) was utilized as simulation tool and main focus was to identify the effect from various numerical options for modeling of solid particles as continuos phase in granular flow. Gidaspow model was chosen as basic model for solid viscosity and drag model. And lun-et-al model was used as solid pressure and radial distribution model, respectively. Several other model options in FLUENT were tested considering the cross related effect. Mass flow rate of the particulate through the slit was measured to compare. Due to the high volume density of the stacked particulates above the slit, effect from various numerical options were not significant. The numerical results from basic model were also compared with experimental results and showed very good agreement. The effects from the characteristics of particles such as diameter, angle of internal friction, and collision coefficient were also analyzed for future design of velocity resistance layer in solar thermal absorber. Angle of internal friction was found to be the dominat variable for the particle mass flow rate considerably. More defined 3D model along with energy equation for complete solar thermal absorber design is currently underway.

The unsteady flow characteristics and associated blade tonal noise of a cross-flow fan are predicted by computational methods. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are time-accurately solved for obtaining the pressure fluctuations between the rotating blades and the stabilizer. and the sound pressure is predicted using Curie's equation. The discrete noise characteristics of three impellers with a uniform and two random pitch (type-A and -B) blades are compared by their SPL (Sound Pressure Level) spectra. and the frequency modulation characteristics of the BPF (Blade Passing Frequency) noise are discussed. Besides. a mathematical model is proposed for the prediction of discrete blade tonal noise and is validated with available experimental data. The fan performance is also compared with experimental data. indicating that the random pitch effect does not significantly alter the performance characteristics at ${\phi}$ 〉 0.4

A numerical analysis on engine coolant is made by the use of FVM based general purpose 3 dimensional Navier-Stokes solver, TURB-3D. Numerical solutions are verified by comparison with the experimental data of Lotus model. The results show a good qualitative as well as quantitative comparison. Coolant flow rate control is attempted through adjusting the cross section area of passage base on the results of an original coolant passage. It is concluded from the results that the flow rate control is possible as attempted, and thus can be used in the real engine design.

Turbulent flow and heat transfer in the 180.deg. bend with square cross section were analizied numerically by using k-.epsilon. 2 eqatiuon model with applications of QUICK scheme and PSL method. Results with PSL method show the more agreements with experimental data than those with wall function. However these results also show that it is very difficult to predict the 3-dimensional turbulent flow with strong secondary flow accuratly by standard k-.epsilon. equation model, and therefore it is necessary to introduce the higher order turbulent model or to correct the standard k-.epsilon. model for the more accurate predictions of these types of flow.
The objective of the present study is to visualize the pulsatile flow fields by using three-dimensional computer simulation and the PIV system. A closed flow loop system was built for the steady and unsteady experiments. The Harvard pulsatile pump was used to generate the pulsatile pressure and velocity waveforms. Conifer powder as the tracing particles was added to water to visualize the flow field. Two consecutive particle images were captured by a CCO camera for the image processing at several cross section. The range validation and the area interpolation methods were used to obtain the final velocity vectors with high accuracy. The finite volume predictions were used to analyze three-dimensional flow patterns in the bifurcation model. The results of the PIV experiment and the computer simulation are in good agreement and the results show the recirculation zones and formation of the paired secondary flow distal to the apex of the bifurcated model. The results also show that the branch flow is pushed strongly to the inner wall due to the inertial force effect and helical motions are generated as the flow proceeds toward the outer wall.

This paper presents a semi-empirical model to predict the frost growth formed on the cold cylinder surface. The model is composed of the correlations for frost properties including the various frosting parameters and local heat transfer coefficient. The effects of varying the correlations for local heat transfer coefficient on the frost growth are examined to establish the model. The numerical results are compared with experimental data obtained by the previous researchers. The results agree well with the experimental data within a maximum error of $13\%$. As the results, the frost thickness decreases with changing angular position from front stagnation to separation point. Also, the effects of air velocity on the frost growth are negligible, as compared to the other frosting parameters.

Fine grid calculations are reported for the developing turbulent flow in a curved duct of square cross-section with a radius of curvature to hydraulic diameter ratio ${\delta}=Rc/D_H=3.357 $ and a bend angle of 720 deg. A sequence of modeling refinements is introduced; the replacement of wall function by a fine mesh across the sublayer and a low Reynolds number algebraic second moment closure up to the near wall sublayer in which the non-linear return to isotropy model and the cubic-quasi-isotropy model for the pressure strain are adopted; and the introduction of a multiple source model for the exact dissipation rate equation. Each refinement is shown to lead to an appreciable improvement in the agreement between measurement and computation.

This study describes a simulation of two-dimensional bubble forming and motion by the Lattice Boltzmann Method with the phase field equation. The free energy model is used to treat the interfacial force and deformation of binary fluids system, drawn into a T-junction the micro channel. A numerical simulation of a binary flow in a cross-junction channel is carried out by using the parallel computation method. The aim in this investigation is to examine the applicability of LBM to numerical analysis of binary fluid separation and motion in the micro channel.
In the block type VHTR core, there are inevitable gaps among core blocks for the installation and refueling of the fuel blocks. These gaps are called bypass gap and the bypass flow is defined as a coolant flows through the bypass gap. Distribution of core bypass flow varies according to the reactor operation since the graphite core blocks are deformed by the fast neutron irradiation and thermal expansion. Furthermore, the cross-flow through an interfacial gap between the stacked blocks causes flow mixing between the coolant holes and bypass gap, so that complicated flow distribution occurs in the core. Since the bypass flow affects core thermal margin and reactor efficiency, accurate prediction and evaluation of the core bypass flow are very important. In this regard, experimental and computational studies were carried out to evaluate the core bypass flow distribution. A multi-block experimental apparatus was constructed to measure flow and pressure distribution. Multi-block effect such as cross flow phenomenon was investigated in the experiment. The experimental data were used to validate a CFD model foranalysis of bypass flow characteristics in detail.
The Hoelyongpo in the Naeseong River as tributary basin of the Nakdong River is broadly well-known a tourist attraction, which is made of sandy beach, and is called "Island of Inland". But Construction of the Dam was planned at upstream of river. In other words, an influx of sediment is blocked from upstream of river. In this situation, through sediment discharge coming from tributary of the Naeseong river, the whether to go ahead of sand beach of the Hoelyongpo is analyzed by using 1-D and 2-D model. The sediment discharge is estimated through ratio raw with basin area, and the instream flow requirement of river coming from dam and the flow rate and sediment coming from tributary are inputted for model. The 1-D model uses HEC-6 and the 2-D model uses SMS(RMA2 and SED2D). The analysis using the HEC-6 is performed from cross section data 10 year ago to the present cross section. Consequently, Yang equation presenting similar result to the present cross section data is determined, using this, the prediction is conducted for the cross section after 20 years. The 2-D analysis is conducted for the present cross section data. The value of distinction between a deposition and erosion with the results presented in the 1, 2-D models is occur, however, the appearance between the deposition and the erosion is similar.
