  • This paper considered the out-of-plane motion of the piping system conveying fluid through the elbow connecting two straight pipes. The extended Hamilton's principle is used to derive equations of motion. It is found that dynamic instability does not exist for the clamped-clamped, clamped-pinned and pinned-pinned boundary conditions. The frequency equations for each boundary conditions are solved numerically to find the natural frequencies. The effects of fluid velocity and Coriolis force on the natural frequencies of piping system are investigated. It is shown that buckling-type instability may occur at certain critical velocities and fluid pressures. Equivalent critical velocity, which is defined as a function of flow velocity and fluid pressure, are calculated for various boundary conditions.

  • Sandwich structures with the superior mechanical properties such as high stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio, good thermal insulation, and high energy absorption capacity are used today in aerospace, automotive, marine, and civil engineering industries. These structures are composed of moderately stiff, thin face sheets that withstand the majority of transverse and in-plane loads, separated by a thick, lightweight core that resists shear forces. In this research, the finite element technique is used to simulate a sandwich panel with a truss core under axial compressive stress using ABAQUS software. A review of past experimental studies shows that the bondline between the core and face sheets plays a vital role in the critical failure load. Therefore, this modeling analyzes the damage initiation modes and debonding between face sheet and core by cohesive surface contact with traction-separation model. According to the results obtained from the modeling, it can be observed that the adhesive stiffness has a significant influence on the critical failure load of the specimens. To achieve the full strength of the structure as a continuum, a lower limit is obtained for the adhesive stiffness. By providing this limit stiffness between the core and the panel face sheets, sudden failure of the structure can be prevented.

  • This paper analyzes the subsurface stress at the spherical contact using Hamilton equation, and with that data, calculates the fatigue limit under the variations of friction coefficient using fatigue theory. After rough surface being made, this paper figures out the random load generated by contacting to the rough surface, analyzes the stress of its subsurface, and calculates the fatigue limit of the rough surface using fatigue theory. The three parts of the fatigue theory are applied, which are critical plane theory, stress invariant theory and mesoscopic theory.

  • In this study, new multi-axial, critical plane based, fretting fatigue crack initiation parameter is developed by the addition of a new term into the Modified Shear Stress Range(MSSR) parameter. The newly developed parameter (MSSR') is then used to evaluate fretting fatigue life of titanium alloy, Ti-6A1-4V with various contact conditions. Finite element analysis is also used in order to obtain stress distribution on the contact surface during fretting fatigue test, which is then used for the calculation of fretting fatigue parameter. The MSSR' parameter shows better performance in predicting fretting fatigue lives from the conventional fatigue data, and less scattering within fretting fatigue data with different contact geometries.

  • The gas turbine engine structures usually are placed on high thermal mechanical stress condition. For general low cycle fatigue evaluation, simple fatigue criterion based on critical plane approach is developed. LCF life of turbine wheel is evaluated with this criterion and process contrived together.

  • Positive and negative coronas in point-to-plane short gap have been investigated with the variations of point radius and gap length. Mainly the onset potentials and current pulses under various conditions were measured with a 70 MHz C.R.O. and a precise-controllable D.C. power supply. In the case of negative corona, the Trichel pulse corona, glow corona and spark regions were distinguished apparently and the critical gap lengths between them were also found clearly. In the case of positive corona, there are streamer corona, spark regions and the critical gap length between them, too. The current pulse forms of Trichel pulse corona of negative and streamer pulse corona of positive are similar in rising time, peak-to-peak time and pulse width. The glow corona current shows D.C. component in form.

  • Recently, a lot of work and interest has been devoted to the development of multiaxial fatigue parameters for fretting fatigue life prediction. Many of these parameters have been reviewed in the literature for simple geometries like a cylinder-on-flat contact configuration. The purpose of this study was to estimate fretting fatigue life using critical plane approach which is one of the multiaxial fatigue theories.

  • The multiaxial fatigue test under in-phase and out-of$.$phase load were performed to study what degradation phenomenon affects fatigue life with virgin and 3600 hrs degraded materials. The various kind of fatigue data fur fatigue life prediction were acquired under pure axial and pure torsional load of fully reversal condition. The models which was investigated are: 1) the von Mises equivalent strain range, 2) the critical shear plane approach method of Fatemi-Socie(FS) parameter, 3) the modified Smith-Watson-Topper(SWT) parameter. The result showed that, fatigue life by material degradation are decreased and life prediction which was used the FS parameter is not conservative but the best result.

  • Among elemental metals, niobium (Nb) has the highest superconducting transition temperature (Tc) at ambient pressure. Thus, Nb films have been used in superconducting electronics and radio frequency cavity applications. In this study, the depositional factors determining the crystallinity and Tc of Nb films were investigated. An Nb film grown at a sputtering temperature of 240℃ exhibited the maximum crystallinity of Nb and the minimum crystallinity of niobium oxide. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed a maximum atomic percent of niobium and a minimum atomic percent of oxygen. A sputtering power of 210 W and a sputtering time of 50 min were the optimal conditions for Nb deposition, and the Tc of the optimized film (9.08 K) was close to that of bulk Nb (9.25 K). Transmission electron microscopy images of the thick film directly confirmed the removal of the typical in-plane compressive strain in the (110) plane caused by residual stress.

  • Burrs always come out with the machining of ducterial with small size. Though the size of burrs is small, burrs dominate deterioration of the accuracy of the micro grooves. So the burr generation model especially side burr generation model was investigated to predict the size of the burrs at the given cutting conditions. The side shear plane is introduced to build the burr generation model and the width of side shear plane nomalized with cutting depth is defined with the shear angle. From the theoretical observation, the width of side shear plane can vary up 40% of the cutting depth. To determine the size of burr and stiffness, single groovings were carried out and it was found that there exist a critical depth of cut that the size or stiffness of the burr vary.
