The Fatigue Behavior and Delamination Properties in Fiber Reinforced Aramid Laminates -Case (I) : AFRP/Al Laminates-

  • The fuselage-wing intersection suffers from the cyclic bending moment of variable amplitude. Therefore, the influence of cyclic bending moment on the delamination and the fatigue crack propagation behavior in AFRP/Al laminate of fuselage-wing was investigated in this study. The cyclic bending moment fatigue test in AFRP/Al laminate was performed with five levels of bending moment. The shape and size of the delamination Lone formed along the fatigue crack between aluminum sheet and aramid fiber-adhesive layer were measured by an ultrasonic C-scan. The relationships between da/dN and ΔK, between the cyclic bending moment and the delamination zone size, and between the fiber bridging behavior and the delamination zone were studied. As results, fiber failures were not observed in the delamination zone in this study, the fiber bridging modification factor increases and the fatigue crack growth rate decrease and the shape of delamination zone is semi-elliptic with the contour decreasing non-linearly toward the crack tip.

  • A branched crack in a semi-infinite plate under uniform tension and bending moment is considered in this study By using the superposition, the stress and moment intensity factors for the branched crack subjected to uniform tension and bending moment we evaluated. The stress intensity factors we obtained by using the finite element method and the J-based mutual integral. The moment intensity factors are calculated by extrapolating the values of the moment new the crack tip. Numerical results lot the normalized stress and moment Intensity factors we shown as functions of the ratio of branched crack length to main crack length and the branching angle.

  • The objective of this study is to propose an effective method for measurement and analysis of fatigue crack. A technique that can measure the statue of fatigue crack propagation fast and correctly for enhancing safety of constructions and securing reliability is necessary. Moreover, the crack propagation behavior characteristics evaluation technique has to be developed using this technique. In this paper, fatigue crack was caused via the fatigue experiment with repeated load on the CT specimen that is made up of STS304. Fatigue crack propagation was measured by tracing the position of the maximum temperature according to the cycles using infrared thermography. The crack growth characteristics was evaluated by applying the moment values on the measuring area to the measured value. As a result of this study, the possibility that the infrared thermography could be applied to measure the fatigue crack was identified. Moreover, it was identified that fatigue crack propagation have a relationship with the moment value of construction.

  • Aluminum 5052/Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic(Al5052/AFRP) laminates are applied to the fuselage-wing intersection. The Al5052/AFRP laminates suffer from the cyclic bending moment of variable amplitude during the service. Therefore, the influence of cyclic bending moment on the delamination and the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Al5052/AFRP laminate was investigated in this study. Al5052/AFRP laminate composite consists of three thin sheets of Al5052 and two layers of unidirectional aramid fibers. The cyclic bending moment fatigue tests were performed with five different levels of bending moment. The shape and size of the delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack between Al5052 sheet and aramid fiber-adhesive layer were measured by an ultrasonic C-scan.   • A15052/AFRP laminates were developed principally to obtain a material with good fatigue strength, in which possible cracks would grow very slowly. Weight savings of more than 30% should be attainable in practice. Also, the crack bridging fibers could still was carry a significant part of the load over the crack, thus the COD and stress intensity factor was reduced at the crack tip. A15052/ AFRP laminates consists of three thin sheets of 5052-H34 aluminum alloy and two layers of [0] unidirectional aramid fiber prepreg. The cyclic-bending moment test was investigated based on applying the five kinds of bending moments. The size of the delamination zone produced between 5052-H34 aluminum alloy sheets and fiber-adhesive layers was measured from ultrasonic C-scan pictures taken around the fatigue crack. In addition, the relationship between the cyclic-bending moment and the delamination zone size was studied and the effect of fiber bridging mechanism was also considered.

  • Moment-curvature relation of RC pier is influenced greatly in occurrence form of crack and difference is happened according to consideration existence and nonexistence of tension stiffening effect. However, studies considering these is very insufficient misgovernment. Also, it is sometimes unavoidable lap splice of axial reinforcement in plastic hinge region of RC piers. However, specific design standard about lap splice of axial reinforcement is unprepared real condition and study about effect that lap splice of axial reinforcement get in occurrence form of crack is insufficient misgovernment. Therefore, in this paper, experiments are performed with hollow RC piers that do lap splice of axial reinforcement by main variable. And this study present analytical method about moment-curvature relation of hollow RC pier that consider tension stiffening effect and analyze effect that lap splice of axial reinforcement gets in occurrence form of crack. Analytic method of moment-curvature relation of RC pier that present in this study shows very similar motion with experiment result and crack interval of RC pier is suffering dominate impact in the augmented reinforcement amount by lap splice and average crack interval decreases as lap splice ratio increases.

Analysis of Harmonic Vibration of Cracked Rotor (균열회전체의 고조파진동 해석)

  • Harmonic vibration characteristics for the general rotor model having a breathing crack are analyzed. Analyses are performed at the half critical speed ranges. The vibration characteristics are explained by using the additional slope and bending moment at the crack position and the influence coefficient showing the structural dynamic characteristics of the rotor. With the low crack depth the magnitude of the additional slope is kept constant even at the speed range at which the orbit magnitude is very sensitive to the rotational speed change. At this speed range the vibration is affected by the influence coefficient only. As the dynamic bending moment exceeds the static bending moment with the increase of crack depth. the additional slope affects the vibration amplitude of cracked rotor and the crack propagation rate increases.

  • The dynamic response due to the unbalance and crack and the quasi-static response due to gravity are analytically derived based on the complex transfer matrix. The additional slope is expressed as function of the bending moment at crack position based on the fracture mechanics concept, and inversely the bending moment is expressed as function of the additional slope at the crack Position. At each angle step during the shaft revolution, the additional slope and bending moment are calculated by an iterativemethod. The transient behavior is considered by introducing Fourier series expansion concept for the additional slope. Simulation is carried out for a simple rotor similar to those available in the literature and comparison of the basic crack behavior is shown. Using the additional slope, the cracked rotor behavior is explained with the crack depth increased: the magnitude of the additional slope increases and the closed crack duration during a revolution decreases as the crack depth increases. The direction of unbalance is also shown as a factor to affect the crack breathing. Whirl orbits are shown near the sub-critical speed ranges of the rotor.
