  • In the secondary refining process for the production of high-grade steel, the proper composition is maintained by alloying elements, and non-metallic inclusions are controlled for high cleanliness. Complex reactions occur simultaneously between the molten steel, slag, inclusions, refractories, and alloying elements during the secondary refining process. Previous works have reported simulation models based on kinetics to predict the compositional changes in molten steel, slag, and inclusions in actual processes. Analytical reviews are required for the models to predict the process accurately. In this study, we reviewed and analyzed simulation models based on the coupled reaction model for the secondary refining process.

  • The domestic development status of Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) simulator which is based on fluid model is explained. As each part which composes the unified simulator, electron heating module, charged and neutral particle transport module, surface reaction module including a sheath model, and GUI (Graphic User Interface) with pre- and post-processors are described in order. Also, we present data base status of chemical reaction and physical collision, which has been applied to the recently developed simulator until now. Lastly, some future plans of development are suggested.

  • Two dimensional simulation results of a capacitively coupled oxygen plasma in a cylindrical reactor geometry are presented. Detailed electron impact reaction rates, which strongly depend on electron energy, are computed from collision cross sections of electrons with $O_2$ and O. Through the coupling of a three moment plasma model with a neutral chemistry/transport model are predicted spatiotemporal distributions of both charged species (electron, $O_2{^+}$, $O^+$, $O_2{^-}$, and $O^-$) and neutral species including ground states ($O_2$ and O) and metastables, known to play important roles in oxygen plasma, such as $O_2(a^1{\Delta}_g)$, $O_2(b^1{{\Sigma}_g}^+)$, $O(^1D)$, and $O(^1S)$. The simulation results clearly verify the existence of a double layer near sheath boundaries in the electronegative plasma.

  • Within recent years attention has been focused on the method of hydrogen storage using metal hydride reactor due to its high energy density, durability, safety and low operating pressure. In this paper, a numerical study is carried out to investigate the coupled heat and mass transfer process for absorption in a cylindrical metal hydride hydrogen storage reactor using a newly developed model. The simulation results demonstrate the evolution of temperature, equilibrium pressure, H/M atomic ratio and velocity distribution as time goes by. Initially, hydrogen is absorbed earlier from near the wall which sets the cooling boundary condition owing to that absorption process is exothermic reaction. Temperature increases rapidly in entire region at the beginning stage due to the initial low temperature and enough metal surface for hydrogen absorption. As time goes by, temperature decreases slowly from the wall region due to the better heat removal. Equilibrium pressure distribution appears similarly with temperature distribution for reasons of the function of temperature. This work provides a detailed insight into the mechanism and corresponding physicochemical phenomena in the reactor during the hydrogen absorption process.

  • Combustion of liquid-fuelled combustion in a high-temperature vitiated-air stream was studied. The mathematical formulation comprise the application of Eulerian conservation equation to the gas phase and Lagrangian equation of droplet motion. The latter is coupled with a droplet-tracking technique (PSI-CELL Model) which regard the droplet phase as a source of mass, momentum, and energy to the gaseous phase. Reaction rate is determined by taking into account the Arrhenius reaction rate based on a single-step reaction mechanism. The calculated profiles show somewhat uncertainess at the upstream, but bases data for designing the combustor followed by 2-phase flow were obtained.

  • A parametric study on pervaporation-facilitated esterification was performed by using a practical model based on non-perfect separation through membrane which is not perfectly permselective to water. Thus, membrane selectivity as well as membrane capability to remove water should be taken into account in establishing the simulation model to explain how the membrane separation influence the esterification reaction process. It was shown by simulation that in the reaction systems with non-perfect separation, the permeation of reactants which are acid or/and alcohol retards the reaction by inducing the backward reaction so that reaction conversion curve is located between a reaction system coupled with pervaporation process having a perfect permselectivity to water and a reaction system without pervaporation process. The volume change of reaction system occurs as a result of the permeation through the membrane. The reaction volume change which can be characterized by the reaction ratio of $r_{\Psi}\;to\;r_{{\Psi}=1}$ affects reaction kinetics by concentrating reactants and products, respectively, with different extent with time; reactant-concentrating effect is dominant during the initial stage of reaction, resulting in facilitating the reaction, and then product-concentrating effect is exerted more on reaction, causing to slow down the reaction. When pervaporative dehydration is applied to the reaction system plays an important role in the reaction as well. The effect of timing to impose pervaporation on reaction system affected the reaction kinetics in terms of reaction rate and reaction conversion. A relationship was derived to explain membrane unit capacity and reaction parameters that will be used as a design tool to determine membrane unit capacity at a given reaction conditions or reaction parameters at a membrane unit capacity.

  • The performandce of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell depends on the effective management of heat and product water by the electrochemical reaction. This study is designed to investigate the parametric change of heat management along the channel of polymer electrolyte membrane. The model was developed by an aspen custom modeler that it can solve differential equation with distretization model. The model can simulate water transport through the membrane electrolyte that is coupled with heat generation. In order to verify the model, it is compared with the experimental data. The water transport behavior is then evaluated with the simulation model.

  • Numerical simulation was carried out to study the trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation by permeable reactive barrier (PRB), and revealed the effect of concentration of TCE, iron medium mass, and concentration of iron-reducing bacteria (IRB). Newly developed model was based on axial dispersion reactor model with chemical and biological reaction terms and was implemented using MATLAB ver R2006A for the numerical solutions of dispersion, convection, and reactions over column length and elapsed time. The reaction terms include reactions of TCE degradation by zero-valent iron (ZVI, Fe$^0$) and ferrous iron (Fe$^{2+}$). TCE concentration in the column inlet was maintained as 10 mg/L. Equation for Fe$^0$ degradation includes only TCE reaction term, while one for Fe$^{2+}$ has chemical and biological reaction terms with TCE and IRB, respectively. Two coupled equations eventually modeled the change of TCE concentration in a column. At Fe$^0$ column, TCE degradation rate was found to be more than 99% from 60 hours to 235 hours, and declined to less than 1% in 1,365 hours. At the Fe$^{2+}$ and IRB mixed column, TCE degradation rate was equilibrated at 85.3% after 210 hours and kept it constant. These results imply that the ferrous iron produced by IRB has lowered the TCE degradation efficiency than ZVI but it can have higher longevity.http://kci.go.kr/kciportal/ci/contents/ciConnReprerSearchPopup.kci#

  • Performance characteristics of the planar-type solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) are investigated by the analysis of flow fields coupled with heat and mass transfer phenomena in anode and cathode channels. For these purposes, performance analysis of the SOFC is conducted based on electrochemical reaction phenomena in electrodes and electrolyte coupled with flow fields in anode and cathode channels. In the present study, the isothermal model adopted in the previous paper prepared by the same authors is extended to the non-isothermal model by solving energy equation additionally with momentum and mass transfer equations using CFD technique. It is found that the difference between isothermal and non-isothermal models come from non-uniform temperature distribution along anode and cathode electrodes by solving energy equation in non-isothermal model. Non-uniform temperature distribution in non-isothermal model contributes to the increase of average temperature of the fuel cell and influences its performance characteristics.
