  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between counseling skills and Sasang constitutional medicine(SCM). Methods Reviewing the texts relevant to SCM, comparison between counseling skills and the excerpt from the relating books was conducted in terms of the attitude of the counselor, the observation method, the evaluation of the counselee, the relationship between the counselor and counselee, and the counseling method. Results As the attitude of the counselor, many kinds of attitudes and skills including respecting the counselee and reciprocal belief were needed. The excerpt from "Gyeokchigo" meant that the counselor or a doctor should have the virtue of Truth. To evaluate the patient's problems in SCM and the counseling, diet, digestion, and sleep could be asked, but questions about the emotions such as Joy, Anger, Sorrow and Pleasure should be more carefully modified in a modern way, when applying clinical practices. Empathy as the main principle of the counseling could be attributed to the main idea of Dongmu Lee Jema, in which all the people could be in the same status in a natural way reflecting that they like the virtue and dislike the evil. Recommendations of regimen and directives could be followed according to SCM Conclusions Several items of counseling skills and SCM coincide but some of the modern counseling skills are still needed to apply SCM to make the patients with psychiatric problems treated efficiently.

  • Background: Woosuk University College of Pharmacy delivered patient counseling education and administered Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) by utilizing standardized patients (SP) in Introductory Pharmacy Practice course. Surveys were conducted to examine students' perception of SP and its impact on experiential education. Methods: Students learned patient counseling by didactic lecture and role-play, followed by hands-on practice with SP. Then, patient counseling skills were assessed during OSCE by utilizing SP. The first survey was conducted immediately after OSCE, and the second survey after the completion of Pharmacy Practice Experiences (PPEs). Results: According to the surveys, majority of the students agreed that utilizing SP was effective in building confidence for conducting patient counseling, reflecting on strengths and weaknesses of communication skills, and preparing for PPEs. It was particularly more effective than role-play in simulating patient counseling in a real pharmacy and reflecting on oneself. Also, OSCE was an appropriate method to assess patient counseling skills and utilizing SP for this purpose was well-suited. Conclusion: Although it is very new in South Korea, other developed countries are already widely utilizing SP, and its importance and necessity have been proven by several studies. Therefore, Korean colleges of pharmacy should begin discussing how to utilize SP to improve students' communications skills and implementing OSCE to evaluate those skills.

  • For the purpose of carrying out nutrition counseling effectively and efficiently, this study assessed the nutrition counseling practice, perception and nutrition knowledge of elementary school children in Gyeongbuk province. Survey questionnaires were distributed between November 2009 and December 2009 to 100 nutrition counseling experienced children (participants) and 110 nutrition counseling non-experienced children (non-participants) and were completed with nutrition teachers' assistance. According to the survey results, girls and overweight/obese children showed higher tendency of participation in nutrition counseling (p<0.001). Participants who took nutrition counseling according to their own intentions showed satisfaction after counseling on diverse subjects such as obesity, unbalanced diet, and weight control. Particularly, 'lack of counseling session time', 'unfavorable counseling condition' or 'difficult explanation' caused participants unsatisfaction after counseling. Participants usually perceived the meaning of nutrition counseling more correctly than non-participants and showed positive intentions for taking further counseling in the future(p<0.001). Diet good for weight control, good food to fix unbalanced diet and diet good for growing stature were the top three subjects of nutrition counseling chosen by subjects (p<0.001). Participants also showed higher nutrition knowledge scores than non-participants. Therefore, it is critically important to apply nutrition counseling in the proper environment (counseling room, time, teaching materials, etc) to elementary school students to fix healthy food habits. Therefore, nutrition teachers need to be provide professional nutrition counseling skills and knowledge.
