A Study on the Application of Thermoelectric Module to the Electric Telecommunication Equipment Cooling (열전소자를 이용한 전자 통신장비 냉각에 관한 연구)

  • Cooling technology has been a vital prerequisite for the rapid, if not explosive, growth of the electronic equipment industry. This has been especially true during the last 20 years with the advent of intergrated circuit chips and their applications in computers and related electronic products. The purpose of this study is to develop a telecommunication equipment cooling system using a thermoelectric module combined with cooling fan. Thermoelectric module is a device that can perform cooling only by input of electric power. In the present study, the cooling package using the thermoeletric module has been developed to improve the thermal performance. The cooling characteristics of the electronic chip was placed into the subrack and it can be rapidly assembled or disassembled in the equipment rack. As a preliminary experiment, the cooling performances between a conventional way using a cooling fin and a proposed method applying the thermoelectric module was comosed and analyzyed. The cooling performance at a simulated electronic component packaging a thermomodule operated well.

Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics around a Surface-Mounted Module Cooled by Forced Air Flow by Piezoelectric Cooling Fan (압전세라믹 냉각팬에 의한 강제 공랭 모듈 주위의 유체유동과 열전달 특성)

  • This paper reports the fluid flow and heat transfer around a module cooled by forced air flow generated by a piezoelectric(PZT) cooling fan. A flexible PZT fan with distortion in a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure which was mounted on a PCB in a parallel-plate channel($450{\times}80{\times}700mm^3$) accelerates surrounding fluid locally. Input voltages of 20-100V and a resonance frequency of 23Hz were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The cooling effect using a PZT fan was larger than that of free convection. Fluid flow around the module were visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distribution around heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film(LCF). We found that the flow type was y-shaped and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a piezoelectric cooling fan.

  • An experimental study has been carried out on cooling perfonnance of a thennoelectric module. This problem is of particular interest in the design of the refrigeration systems using thermoelectric module, such as cosmetic refrigerator, wine cellar and air cooler. The effect of the input voltage and the hot side temperature on the cooling performance is studied in detail. The $\Delta$T, temperature difference between cold side and hot side surface of thermoelectric module, is described in terms of the input voltage and the hot side temperature. It is found that the cooling capacity can be improved by increasing the input voltage and by reducing the heat from the hot side of the thermoelectric module. However, COP is decreased with an increase in the input voltage, since power consumption is also increased. Thus, optimum input voltage can be selected based on cooling capacity and COP.

  • In this study, the cooling characteristics of a liquid cooler using thermoelectric module was experimentally investigated. The experiment was conducted for various inner structures of liquid cooler (4 cases), hot fluid flow rates (0.15-0.25 L/min), number of T.E module (2, 4, 6 set), and the cooling water flow rates (200-600 cc/min) for both parallel and counter flow types. Among the results, better cooling performance geometry was selected. And experiment was also carried out to examine further enhancement of cooling performance by inserting coils (pitches: 0.2, 3, 6 mm) into the hot-fluid channel. Present results showed that the short serpentine type(case2) indicated the best cooling performance. In the case of coil pitch of 3 mm, the best cooling performance was shown, more than 10% increase of the inlet and outlet temperature difference, compared with the case of the cooler without coil. Consequently, the inserted coil pitch should be properly selected to improve cooling performance.

  • Due to the special structure of the car seat, the heating and cooling module must be installed in a limited area resulting in difficulty in regards to achieving optimal cooling and heating efficiency. In order to solve these problems, this paper establishes a new structure for heating and cooling modules, verifies the structural feasibility of the thermoelectric module for cooling and heating the seat through fluid simulations, and verifies the proper design of the mechanical components of the thermoelectric module.

  • The improvement of cooling ability for the air conditioner is the most efficient method of application of its system. Therefore, this study has been investigated the improvement of cooling ability for the air conditioner using automotive by attached of a thermoelectric module. According to the result of test, capacity of the thermoelectric module make temperature range from $-75^{\circ}C$ to $+300^{\circ}C$ possible to cooling and exothermic. In addtion to, the reduction effect of energy revealed and the effect of liquid hammer remained with safety by attached the thermoelectric module. It was found that the air conditioner system by attached thermoelectric module have better cooling ability than the air conditioner system of existing vehicle.

The fluids are locally accelerated by a flexible PZT fan which deflects inside a fluid transport system of comparatively simple structure mounted on a PCB in a parallel-plate channel(450${\times}$80${\times}$700㎣). Input voltages of 20-100V and a resonance frequency of 23㎐ were used to vibrate the cooling fan. Input power to the module was 4W. The fluid flow around the module was visualized by using PIV system. The temperature distributions around a heated module were visualized by using liquid crystal film(LCF). The cooling effect using a PZT fan was independent of the vent area ratios at the channel inlet and was similar to the forced convection cooling. We found that the flow type was Y-shape and the cooling effect was increased by the wake generated by a piezoelectric cooling fan.

  • The performance and lighting characteristics of the LED depend on cooling condition because the power LED generates lots of heat. In this paper, the effect of the generated heat from power LED module on lighting characteristics and performance is measured and evaluated. For experiments, the transient temperature of a power LED module with cooling condition is measured. In addition, the temperature and lighting characteristics of the LED module are measured during the steady state. As a result, the cooling condition is less effective on the lighting characteristics of the LED module at rated current but the cooling condition extremely affects those of the LED module over the rated current. Because high temperature of the power LED module causes the low phosphor conversion, luminance efficiency becomes low and color temperature becomes high. When power LED module are driven over the rated condition, higher temperature is directly related to lighting characteristics and performance of the LED module rather than higher current.

  • The research for computer cooling system has been researched briskly at home and abroad. Most of computer cooling systems are the air cooling method using cooling fan. The air cooling system are most widely used for low cost and easy installation but have limits in cooling. The water cooling system are good for cooling efficiency but bad for installation. This paper presents the developing for cooling system to be inserted in computer using thermoelectric module.

  • Battery heat management is essential for high power and high energy battery system because it affects its performance, longevity, and safety. In this paper, we investigated the temperature of the 18650 Lithium Ion Battery Module used in a Energy Storage System (ESS) and the cooling method to minimize cell-to-cell temperature variation of battery module. For uniform temperature distribution within a battery module, the flow direction of the coolant in a battery module has been changed according to the time interval, and studied the effect of the cooling method on the temperature uniformity in a battery module which includes a number of battery cells. The experimental results show that bi-directional battery cooling method can effectively reduce the cell-to-cell temperature variation compared with the one-directional battery cooling. Furthermore, it is also found that bi-directional battery cooling can reduce the maximum temperature in a battery module.
