An Adaptive Radial Basis Function Network algorithm for nonlinear channel equalization

  • The authors investigate the convergence speed problem of nonlinear adaptive equalization. Convergence constraints and time constant of radial basis function network using stochastic gradient (RBF-SG) algorithm is analyzed and a method of making time constant independent of hidden-node output power by using sample-by-sample node output power estimation is derived. The method for estimating the node power is to use a single-pole low-pass filter. It is shown by simulation that the proposed algorithm gives faster convergence and lower minimum MSE than the RBF-SG algorithm.

  • This paper represents a disturbance compensation control for attenuating disturbance responses. In the consideration of the requirements on the model accuracy in the model based compensator designs, an experimental feed forward compensator design based on adaptive estimation by Filtered-x least mean square (FXLMS) algorithm is proposed. The convergence properties of the FXLMS algorithm are discussed and its conditions for the asymptotic convergence are derived theoretically. The effectiveness of the proposed method and the theoretical proof are verified by computer simulation.

  • In this paper, we investigate an infinite impulse response adaptive digital filter based on the nonlinear least-squares algorithm, and compare its convergence speed to that of a self-orthogonalizing IIR ADF which is known to have fastest convergence. By simulation, it is shown that the NLS IIR ADF converges faster than other known IIR ADF's, especially for a low-order case.

  • In this paper the issue of convergence rate is introduced for a learning control scheme we have developed and applied for tracking of unknown linear systems. A sufficient condition under which the output trajectory converges exponentially fast is obtained using the controllability grammian of controllable linear systems. Under the same condition it is also shown that the learning control input converges exponentially with the same rate as the rate of output convergence. A numerical example with computer simulation results is presented to show the feasibility of the scheme.

An Escalator Structure-Based Adaptation Algorithm for Channel Equalization with Eigenvalue Spread-Independency

  • In this paper we introduce a new escalator(ESC) structure-based adaptation algorithm. The proposed algorithm is independent of eigenvalues spread ratio(ESR) of channel and has faster convergence speed than that of the conventional ESC algorithms. This algorithm combines the fast adaptation ability of least square methods and the orthogonalization property of the ESC structure. From the simulation results the proposed algorithm shows superior convergence speed and no slowing down of convergence speed when we increase the ESR of the channel.

Development of a Time-Domain Simulation Tool for Offshore Wind Farms

  • A time-domain simulation tool to predict the dynamic power output of wind turbines in an offshore wind farm was developed in this study. A wind turbine model consisting of first or second order transfer functions of various wind turbine elements was combined with the Ainslie's eddy viscosity wake model to construct the simulation tool. The wind turbine model also includes an aerodynamic model that is a look up table of power and thrust coefficients with respect to the tip speed ratio and pitch angle of the wind turbine obtained by a commercial multi-body dynamics simulation tool. The wake model includes algorithms of superposition of multiple wakes and propagation based on Taylor's frozen turbulence assumption. Torque and pitch control algorithms were implemented in the simulation tool to perform max-Cp and power regulation control of the wind turbines. The simulation tool calculates wind speeds in the two-dimensional domain of the wind farm at the hub height of the wind turbines and yields power outputs from individual wind turbines. The NREL 5MW reference wind turbine was targeted as a wind turbine to obtain parameters for the simulation. To validate the simulation tool, a Danish offshore wind farm with 80 wind turbines was modelled and used to predict the power from the wind farm. A comparison of the prediction with the measured values available in literature showed that the results from the simulation program were fairly close to the measured results in literature except when the wind turbines are congruent with the wind direction.

Convergence Behavior of the filtered-x LMS Algorithm for Active Noise Caneller

  • Application of the Filtered-X LMS adaptive filter to active noise cancellation requires to estimate the transfer characteristics between the output and the error signal of the adaptive canceler. In this paper, we derive an adaptive cancellation algorithm and analyze is convergence behavior when the acoustic noise is assumed to consist of multiple sinusoids. The results of the convergence analysis of the Filtered-X LMS algorithm indicate that the effects of parameter estimation inaccuracy on the convergence behavior of the algorithm are characterize by two distinct components : Phase estimation error and estimated magnitude. In particular, the convergence of the Filtered-X LMS algorithm is show to be strongly affected by the accuracy of the phase response estimate. Simulation results of the algorithm are presented which support the theoretical convergence analysis.

  • In this paper a second-order iterative learning control algorithm with feedback is proposed for the trajectory-tracking control of nonlinear dynamic systems with unidentified parameters. In contrast to other known methods, the proposed teaming control scheme utilize more than one past error history contained in the trajectories generated at prior iterations, and a feedback term is added in the learning control scheme for the enhancement of convergence speed and robustness to disturbances or system parameter variations. The convergence proof of the proposed algorithm is given in detail, and the sufficient condition for the convergence of the algorithm is provided. We also discuss the convergence performance of the algorithm when the initial condition at the beginning of each iteration differs from the previous value of the initial condition. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is shown by computer simulation result. It is shown that, by adding a feedback term in teaming control algorithm, convergence speed, robustness to disturbances and robustness to unmatched initial conditions can be improved.

  • 적응 필터의 입력 신호의 상관도 (correlation)가 클 경우 LMS 알고리즘의 수렴 속도는 상당히 느려지게 된다. 본 논문에서는 입력 신호의 상관도가 높은 상황에서 수렴 속도를 향상시킬 수 있는 적응 필터링 알고리즘을 제안한다. 입력 신호에 대하여 직교성을 가지도록 변환을 인위적으로 가하여 LMS 알고리즘의 한계를 극복한다. 제안한 알고리즘의 성능 향상은 시스템식별 모델을 통하여 그 수렴 속도의 개선을 확인하며 또한 시변 환경 하에서 적응 필터의 시변 추적 능력을 통해 보여 진다.

Right-Angle-Bent CPW for the Application of the Driver-Amplifier-Integrated 40 Gbps TW-EML Module

  • In this letter we present a right-angle-bent coplanar waveguide (CPW) which we developed for the application of the driver amplifier-integrated (DAI) 40 Gbps traveling wave electroabsorption modulated laser module. The developed CPW realized parallel progression of the radio frequency (RF) and light using a dielectric overlay structure and wedge bonding on the bending section. The measured $S_{11}$ and $S_{21}$ of the developed CPW were kept below-10 dB up to 35 GHz and -3 dB up to 43 GHz, respectively. These measured results of the CPW were in good agreement with the simulation results and demonstrated the applicability of the CPW to the 40 Gbps communication module.
