A full-sized model for the horizontally oriented metal cask containing 21 spent fuel assemblies has been considered to evaluate the internal natural convection behavior within a dry shield canister (DSC) filled with helium as a working fluid. A variety of two-dimensional CFD numerical investigations using a turbulent model have been performed to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics and the velocity distribution of natural convection inside the canister. The present numerical solutions for a range of Rayleigh number values ($3{\times}10^6{\sim}3{\times}10^7$) and a working fluid of air are further validated by comparing with the experimental data from previous work, and they agreed well with the experimental results. The predicted temperature field has indicated that the peak temperature is located in the second basket from the top along the vertical center line by effects of the natural convection. As the Rayleigh number increases, the convective heat transfer is dominant and the heat transfer due to the local circulation becomes stronger. The heat transfer characteristics show that the Nusselt numbers corresponding to $1.5{\times}10^6$ < Ra < $1.0{\times}10^7$ are proportional to 0.5 power of the Rayleigh number, while the Nusselt numbers for $1.0{\times}10^7$ < Ra < $8.0{\times}10^7$ are proportional to 0.27 power of the Rayleigh number. These results agreed well with the trends of the experimental data for Ra > $1.0{\times}10^7$.

A naphthalene sublimation technique based on the heat/mass transfer analogy is used to investigate the circumferential mass transfer from a circular cylinder in an approaching uniform shear flow. Experiments are performed in a wind tunnel (450*450m $m^{2}$ with a shear flow generator which is specially manufactured for generating variable shear rates(S). The effects of an approaching shear flow are correlated with mass transfer coefficients. It is found that the local mass transfer rate on a circular cylinder is characterized with the shear parameter $K^{d}$ defined as Sd/ $U^{c}$ , where d is the radius of cylinder and $U^{c}$ is the approaching velocity at the center of cylinder. The angle on the corresponding to minimum Sherwood number is approximately proportional to the shear parameter on an upper and down number is approximately proportional to the shear parameter on an upper and down circular cylinder (0< $K^{d}$ <0.132). Changes on the averaged mass transfer rate are not significant for small $K^{d}$ , which are slightly proportional to K$d^{2}$ but the local mass transfer rates are significantly changed with the approaching shear flow.
Purpose: Drying is one of the most widely used methods for preserving agricultural products or food. The main purpose of drying agricultural products is to reduce their water content for minimizing microbial spoilage and deterioration reaction during storage. Methods: Although numerous drying methods are successfully applied to dehydrate various agricultural products with little drying time, the final quality of dried samples in terms of appearance and shape cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, based on published literature, this review was conducted to study the drying characteristics of various agricultural products when different drying methods were applied. Results: An increase in the drying power of sources-for example, increase in hot air temperature or velocity, infrared or microwave power-and the combination of drying power levels can reduce the drying time of various agricultural products. In addition, energy efficiency in drying significantly relies on the compositions of the dried samples and drying conditions. Conclusions: The drying power source is the key factor to control entire drying process of different samples and final product quality. In addition, an appropriate drying method should be selected depending on the compositions of the agricultural products.

The present study investigates the convective heat/mass transfer characteristics in wavy ducts of a primary surface heat exchanger. The effects of duct aspect ratio and flow velocity on the heat/mass transfer are investigated. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the corrugated duct sidewall are determined using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The aspect ratios of the wavy duct are 7.3, 4.7 and 1.8 with the corrugation angle of $145\Omega$. The Reynolds numbers, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, vary from 300 to 3,000. The results show that at the low Re(Re $\leq$ 1000) the secondary vortices called Taylor-Gortler vortices perpendicular to the main flow direction are generated due to effect of duct curvature. By these secondary vortices, non-uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients distributions appear. As the aspect ratio decreases, the number of cells formed by secondary vortices are reduced and secondary vortices and comer vortices mix due to decreased aspect ratio at Re$\leq$1000. At Re >1000, the effects of corner vortices become stronger. The average Sh for the aspect ratio of 7.3 and 4.7 are almost same. But at the small aspect ratio of 1.8, the average Sh decreases due to decreased aspect ratio. More pumping power (pressure loss) is required for the larger aspect ratio due to the higher flow instability.

This study focused on comparing the meteorological conditions in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) on high-event days and non-event days in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). We utilized observed PM10 and meteorological variables at the surface as well as at the upper heights. The results showed that high-event days were consistently associated with lower wind speed, whereas wind direction showed no particular difference between high-event and non-event days with frequent westerlies and northwesterlies for both cases. During high-event days, the temperature was much warmer than the monthly normal values with a sharp increasing trend, and Relative Humidity (RH) was higher than the monthly normal, especially on high-event days in February. During high-event days in spring, a double inversion layer was present at surface and upper heights. This indicates that stability in the multi-layer is an important indicator of higher PM10 concentrations. Net radiation in spring and winter is also closely associated with higher PM10 concentrations. Strong net radiation resulted in large sensible heat, which in turn facilitated a deeper mixing height with diluted PM10 concentrations; in contrast, PM10 concentrations were higher when sensible heat in spring and winter was very low. We also confirmed that convective and friction velocity was higher on non-event days than on high-event days, and this was especially obvious in spring and winter. This indicated that thermal turbulence was dominant in spring, whereas in winter, mechanical turbulence was dominant over the SMA.
On the basis of fabrication, the utilization of nano material in numerous industrial and technological system, obtained the utmost significance in current decade. Therefore, the current investigation presents a theoretical disposition regarding the flow of electric conducting Williamson nanoliquid over a stretchable surface in the presence of the motile microorganism. The impact of thermal radiation and magnetic parameter are incorporated in the energy equation. The concentration field is modified by adding the influence of chemical reaction. Moreover, the splendid features of nanofluid are displayed by utilizing the thermophoresis and Brownian motion aspects. Compatible similarity transformation is imposed on the equations governing the problem to derive the dimensionless ordinary differential equations. The Homotopy analysis method has been implemented to find the analytic solution of the obtained differential equations. The implications of specific parameters on profiles of velocity, temperature, concentration and motile microorganism density are investigated graphically. Moreover, coefficient of skin friction, Nusselt number, Sherwood number and density of motile number are clarified in tabular forms. It is revealed that thermal radiation, thermophoresis and Brownian motion parameters are very effective for improvement of heat transfer. The reported investigation can be used in improving the heat transfer appliances and systems of solar energy.

In this study, the effect of thermal contact resistance between pin-channel tubes on the heat transfer characteristics was analytically examined around the channel tubes with the pins attached to two consecutive arranged channel pipes. The numerical results showed that the heat transfer coefficient decreased geometrically as the thermal contact resistance increased, and the corresponding temperature change on the contact surface increased as the thermal contact resistance increased. The thinner the pin, the more pronounced the geometric drop in the heat transfer coefficient. It was confirmed that the higher the height of the pin, the higher was the heat transfer coefficient, however, the greater the size of the thermal contact resistance, the smaller was the heat transfer coefficient. It was found that the temperature change in the inner wall of the channel tube did not significantly affect the heat transfer characteristics owing to the thermal contact resistance. Furthermore, the velocity of air at the entrance of the channel tube was proportional to the heat transfer coefficient due to a decrease in the convective heat resistance corresponding to an increase in the flow rate.
A stochastic method using continuous time Markov process is presented to model the one-dimensional convective nuclide transport in geologic media, which have usually heterogeneous feature in physical/geochemical parameters such as velocity, dispersion coefficient, and retardation factor resulting poor description by conventional deterministic advection-dispersion model. The primary desired quantities from a stochastic model are the mean values and variance of the state variables as a function of time. The time-dependent probability distributions of nuclides are presented for each discretized compartment given the volumetric groundwater flux and the intensity of transition. Since this model is discrete in medium space, physical/geochemical parameters which affect nuclide transport can be easily incorporated for the heterogeneous media as well as remarkably layered media having spatially varied parameters. Even though the Markov process model developed in this study was shown to be sensitive to the number of discretized compartments showing numerical dispersion as the number of compartments are increased, this could be easily calibrated by comparing with the analytical deterministic model.
The methods measuring the precipitation drop size distribution(hereafter referred to as DSD) at Cloud Physics Observation System (CPOS) in Daegwallyeong are to use PARSIVEL (PARticle SIze and VELocity) disdrometer (hereafter referred to as PARSIVEL) and Micro Rain Radar (hereafter referred to as MRR). First of all, PARSIVEL and MRR give good correlation coefficients between their rain rates and those of rain gage: $R^2=0.93$ and 0.91, respectively. For the DSD, the rain rates are classified in 3 categories (Category 1: rr (Rain Rate) ${\leq}0.5\;mm\;h^{-1}$, Category 2: $0.5\;mm\;h^-1$ < rr < $4.0\;mm\;h^{-1}$, Category 3: rr ${\geq}4\;mm\;h^{-1}$). The shapes of PARSIVEL and MRR DSD are relatively most similar in category 2. In addition, we retrieve the vertical rain rate and liquid water content from MRR under melting layer, calculated by Cha et al's method, in Daegwallyeong ($37^{\circ}41{\prime}N$, $128^{\circ}45^{\prime}E$, 843 m ASL, mountain area) and Haenam ($34^{\circ}33^{\prime}N$, $126^{\circ}34^{\prime}E$, 4.6 m ASL, coast area). The vertical variations of rain rate and liquid water content in Daegwallyeong are smaller than those in Haenam. We think that this different vertical rain rate characteristic for both sites is due to the vertical different cloud type (convective and stratiform cloud seem dominant at Haenam and Daegwallyeong, respectively). This suggests that the statistical precipitation DSD model, for the application of weather radar and numerical simulation of precipitation processes, be considered differently for the region, which will be performed in near future.
In the high convective gas flow condition, irregular shaped water waves from which droplet entrainment occurs are generated under horizontally stratified two-phase flow condition. KAERI proposed a new mechanistic droplet entrainment model based on the momentum balance equation consisting of the shear stress, surface tension, and gravity forces. However, this model requires correlation or experimental data of several physical parameters related to the wave characteristics. In the present study, we tried to measure the physical parameters such as wave slope, wave hypotenuse length, wave velocity, wave frequency, and wavelength experimentally. For this, an experiment was conducted in the horizontal rectangular channel of which width, height, and length are, respectively, 40 mm, 50 mm, and 4.2 m. In the present test, the working fluids are chosen as air and water. The PIV technique was applied not only to obtain images for phase interface waves but also to measure the velocity field of the water flow. Additionally, we developed the parallel wire conductance probe for the confirmation of wave height from PIV image. Finally, we measured the physical parameters to be used in the validation of new droplet entrainment model.
