  • This paper will produce a practical, accurate method for computing the equipment forced outages rate (FOR) based on 10 years of historical equipment outages data. Also, the location and weather conditions on outages are included. The computed FOR are ranked as 4 groups (presumably high, medium, low & very low) depending on the frequency (up to # times per year) and a consistent framework for transmission reliability performance table is developed based on these groupings. Our intent is to use this framework as guidelines for contingency analysis criteria in system planning / operation departments. The concepts are illustrated on the 2005 KEPCO power system.

  • This paper presents a fast realistic method based on a P-Q decoupled linearized model for contingency analysis. This method involves new idea to correct the errors caused by neglecting the resistance of transmission lines and/or by linearizing the model. The idea is to use fast correction method of errors by the principle of superposition for compensating these errors. Results demonstrating the effectiveness of the method on 25-bus model system and IEEE30-model system are presented

  • In the conventional load flow technique, it is assumed that the generator at the slack bus is used to supply the transmission losses and the change of power due to the generator outage. The assumption is not true in physical sense. This paper presents a new load flow technique that considers the governor-frequency characteristics and load-frequency characteristics and the technique is consistent with the actual power system phenomenon. This paper proposes an efficient methodology using sensitivity with the new technique for contingency analysis, which is used to calculate the line flows. Computational results of this technique applied to IEEE 14-bus system are presented.

  • KPX(Korea Power Exchange) predicts that summer peak load will be 70,700MW and system overload will be 150% from contingency analysis. This paper presents a method to operate power system at 2010 summer peak. about equipment variation, power system variation, analysis results of voltage stability, and the method to relief overload by comparing 2009 and 2010. Especially, transmission constraints to prevent global contingency in Korea power system and the role of SPS(Special Protection System) to prevent voltage collapse when fault occurs are introduced.

  • This paper describes a fast security analysis techique for voltage security assessment. The new method identifies the location of buses with potential voltage problems and thereby defines a voltage-sensitive subnetwork for contingency screening. The efficieny of this method is derived from the use of a voltage subnetwork to drastically reduce the number of bus voltages to be solved; and subsequently from the use of compensation techniques and sparse-vectors methods for screening. Results demonstrating the effectiveness of the method on the IEEE-14 bus model system are presented.

  • This paper presents a fast and accurate contingency analysis in EHV systems for line outages, loss of generation of redispatching and loss-of-load or load management. Unlike other contingencies, line outage requires the modification of the Jacobian of the base case power flow and the calculation of its new inverse, which is substantially different from the original inverse. In this paper, we obtain the inverse of the new Jacobian from the original inverse without repeating the time consuming matrix inversion process. Numerical test results show the significant improvement in the accuracies compared with those obtained using the original inverse.

  • This paper describes a new ultra-fast contingency screening algorithm for on-line TSA without time simulation. All machines are represented in a classical model and the stability index is defined as the ratio between acceleration power during a fault and deceleration power after clearing the fault. Critical clustering of machines is done based on the stability index, and the power-angle curve of the critical machines is drawn assuming that the angles of the critical machines increase uniformly, while those of the non-critical ones remain constant. Finally, the critical clearing time (CCT) is computed using the power-angle curve. The proposed algorithm is tested on the KEPCO system comprised of 900-bus and 230-machines. The CCT values computed with the screening algorithm are in good agreement with those computed using the detailed model and the SIME method. The computation time for screening about 270 contingencies is 17 seconds with 1.2 GHz PC.

  • A voltage stability assessment consists of the contingency screening, voltage stability analysis, and counter measures. A widely used index for the voltage stability assessment of power system is the reactive power margin. It shows some factors of voluntariness as following the status of power system and load levels for the target analyzing area. Therefore, it has a demerit that the absolute amounts of reactive power margin is not to be applied by the quantized margin criterion. This paper selects a vulnerable area by assigning the voltage instability for the particular contingency for the selection of vulnerable area in the respect of the investigation of reactive power margin or VQVI as an index of V-Q margin sensitivity in order to overcome the demerit. This will be able to grasp the V-Q margin sensitivity for the target analyzing area by presenting the ratio of power margin between the margin before and after contingency as following the calculation of reactive power margin. The presented method is applied to the voltage stability assessment for the Metropolitan area of 2003 KEPCO summer peak system.
