Students Opportunities to Develop Scientific Argumentation in the Context of Scientific Inquiry: A Review of Literature

  • The purpose of this literature review is to investigate what kinds of research have been done about scientific inquiry in terms of scientific argumentation in the classroom context from the upper elementary to the high school levels. First, science educators argued that there had not been differentiation between authentic scientific inquiry by scientists and school scientific inquiry by students in the classroom. This uncertainty of goals or definition of scientific inquiry has led to the problem or limitation of implementing scientific inquiry in the classroom. It was also pointed out that students' learning science as inquiry has been done without opportunities of argumentation to understand how scientific knowledge is constructed. Second, what is scientific argumentation, then? Researchers stated that scientific inquiry in the classroom cannot be guaranteed only through hands-on experimentation. Students can understand how scientific knowledge is constructed through their reasoning skills using opportunities of argumentation based on their procedural skills using opportunities of experimentation. Third, many researchers emphasized the social practices of small or whole group work for enhancing students' scientific reasoning skills through argumentations. Different role of leadership in groups and existence of teachers' roles are found to have potential in enhancing students' scientific reasoning skills to understand science as inquiry. Fourth, what is scientific reasoning? Scientific reasoning is defined as an ability to differentiate evidence or data from theory and coordinate them to construct their scientific knowledge based on their collection of data (Kuhn, 1989, 1992; Dunbar & Klahr, 1988, 1989; Reif & Larkin, 1991). Those researchers found that students skills in scientific reasoning are different from scientists. Fifth, for the purpose of enhancing students' scientific reasoning skills to understand how scientific knowledge is constructed, other researchers suggested that teachers' roles in scaffolding could help students develop those skills. Based on this literature review, it is important to find what kinds of generalizable teaching strategies teachers use for students scientific reasoning skills through scientific argumentation and investigate teachers' knowledge of scientific argumentation in the context of scientific inquiry. The relationship between teachers' knowledge and their teaching strategies and between teachers teaching strategies and students scientific reasoning skills can be found out if there is any.

  • All are organizations embedded, here in after, Em-organizaion that confronts the ever-growing complexity. It is important to know Em-organization through Individual Mastery. The complexity must be decreased, and clarified in order to derive to get our ontology from the influence of others. The opportunity to learn in practice is embedded in processes that the community developed. Driving strategic innovation is achieving breakthrough performance throughout the value chain. We used to express complex unit on matrix which includes only the federal statutes because the role of information technology should be a source of competitive advantages each other. Therefore, we got the idea that integrated both kinds of knowledge to create differentiation by ourselves. This practice is situated the learning of Strategic CoP in e-class seminar of our graduate school. We suggest theoretically two things. One is matrix-based decision. Another is creating new context through systems thinking.

  • E-business strategy has interests in Issues of strategic positioning and its impact on firm performance. These studies address the environmental factors as antecedents to strategic decision makings and its consequences such like firm performance. However most studies has not considered the role of business models In explaining e-business firm performance. We adopt Porter's generic strategies to the e-business context. We Identify business models and e-business environmental factors as antecedents and then examine these factors Influence on firm performance. We find that uncertainty of environment has a negatively related to the strategic choices of e-Business firms; in contrast, market turbulence positively affects the level of adoption of all the strategies. Among the strategies, marketing differentiation only makes an Impact on firm performance.

  • This study intends to analyze the various spatial structures of the Seoul city museum with reference to the layouts and the qualitative mode of exhibition items. Understanding the way of actual exhibition design can be a clue to understand the contents of exhibition story which guarantees to make the pertinent space and visitors route organization between different levels of architectural space and exhibition space. The basic methodological ideas of this study are as follows; 1) Systematic analysis about the characteristics of exhibits, historic context, and hierachy of each thematic zone. 2) Analysis of physical combination of object spatial cell in the view of visitors circulatiov. Regulation of Early Steps of Chondrogenesis in the Developing Limb

  • In the developing limb, chondrogenesis is an important prerequisite for the formation of cartilage whose template is required for bone formation. Chondrogenesis is a tightly regulated multi-step process, including mesenchymal cell recruitment/migration, prechondrogenic condensation of the mesenchymal cells, commitment to the chondrogenic lineage, and differentiation into chondrocytes. This process is controlled exquisitely by cellular interactions with the surrounding matrix and regulating factors that initiate or suppress cellular signaling pathways and transcription of specific genes in a temporal-spatial manner. Understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of chondrogenesis is important not only in the context of establishing basic principle of developmental biology but also in providing research direction toward preventive and/or regenerative medicine. Here, I will overview the current understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to prechondrogenic condensation processes, the crucial steps for chondrogenesis, focusing on cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions.

Vowel Fundamental Frequency in Manner Differentiation of Korean Stops and Affricates

  • In this study, I investigate the role of post-consonantal fundamental frequency (F0) as a cue for automatic distinction of types of Korean stops and affricates. Rather than examining data obtained by restricting contexts to a minimum to prevent the interference of irrelevant factors, a relatively natural speaker independent speech corpus is analysed. Automatic and statistical approaches are adopted to annotate data, to minimise speaker variability, and to evaluate the results. In spite of possible loss of information during those automatic analyses, statistics obtained suggest that vowel F0 is a useful cue for distinguishing manners of articulation of Korean non-continuant obstruents having the same place of articulation, especially of lax and aspirated stops and affricates. On the basis of the statistics, automatic classification is attempted over the relevant consonants in a specific context where the micro-prosodic effects appear to be maximised. The results confirm the usefulness of this effect in application for Korean phone recognition.

Autophagy in neurodegeneration: two sides of the same coin

  • Autophagy is a bulk lysosomal degradation process important in development, differentiation and cellular homeostasis in multiple organs. Interestingly, neuronal survival is highly dependent on autophagy due to its post-mitotic nature, polarized morphology and active protein trafficking. A growing body of evidence now suggests that alteration or dysfunction of autophagy causes accumulation of abnormal proteins and/or damaged organelles, thereby leading to neurodegenerative disease. Although autophagy generally prevents neuronal cell death, it plays a protective or detrimental role in neurodegenerative disease depending on the environment. In this review, the two sides of autophagy will be discussed in the context of several neurodegenerative diseases.

The Brand Image of Apparel: A Qualitative Approach (의류 브랜드 이미지에 관한 질적 연구)

  • Two components of brand image are brand association related to brand properties and brand persona which is measured by descriptive words. The purpose of this study is to analyze the brand image of apparel by qualitative approach including natural grouping method suggested by Aaker. For this, face-to-face interviews were carried out in March and April 200l.11 interviewees were respectively asked to classify' pre-selected several tens of apparel brands based on their image differentiation, and then to explain the reason of grouping and to describe resultant brand groups. In this process, many brand image associations and brand persona-descriptive words were collected. 9 types of brand association were identified, and these were summarized as three factors suggested by Keller -attributes, benefits, and attitudes/evaluations. And 3 words which used to refer brand image frequently -dokteukhan (unique), simple, and yeosungseureowoon (feminine)- were interpreted in their meaning. Brand persona-descriptive words implied diverse meaning which were dependent on context.

JNK Regulation of Oncogenesis

  • The literature provides strong precedent for both pro-tumorigenic and tumor suppressor roles for the c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) in the setting of oncogenesis. Clearly, JNKs are activated by numerous oncogenes and growth factors and the literature documents a role for these MAP kinases in cell proliferation and transformation. By contrast, JNKs mediate signals from diverse stimuli that result in cell death or differentiation and a role for JNKs as tumor suppressors has emerged. This enigmatic nature of the JNKs in the setting of oncogenesis is considered herein. Further illumination of the complex and context-dependent functions of the JNKs in cancer cells is of obvious importance for the rational use of small molecule JNK inhibitors as therapeutics.

The Role of CD4 T Cell Help in CD8 T Cell Differentiation and Function During Chronic Infection and Cancer

  • CD4 and CD8 T cells are key players in the immune response against both pathogenic infections and cancer. CD4 T cells provide help to CD8 T cells via multiple mechanisms, including licensing dendritic cells (DCs), co-stimulation, and cytokine production. During acute infection and vaccination, CD4 T cell help is important for the development of CD8 T cell memory. However, during chronic viral infection and cancer, CD4 helper T cells are critical for the sustained effector CD8 T cell response, through a variety of mechanisms. In this review, we focus on T cell responses in conditions of chronic Ag stimulation, such as chronic viral infection and cancer. In particular, we address the significant role of CD4 T cell help in promoting effector CD8 T cell responses, emerging techniques that can be utilized to further our understanding of how these interactions may take place in the context of tertiary lymphoid structures, and how this key information can be harnessed for therapeutic utility against cancer.
