  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the significance of musicals and find a way to utilize them in Korean language culture classes for foreigners. Korean language education aims to improve communication skills, and cultural education is necessary to help students understand not only the language but also the social background and context of the language. Accordingly, the author of this study has put together a lesson plan for Korean culture incorporating musicals, a topic that has been heretofore disregarded in Korean language education. Musicals are an appealing art medium for Korean language learners, as they provide striking visuals centered around distinct narrative structures and music. The musical "Swag Age: Shout out Joseon!," which this study focuses on, provides particularly suitable content, as it deals with social issues that are relevant even in contemporary Korean society and includes sijo (poetry), which can be used to teach traditional Korean literature. Based on the above characteristics, the author of this study outlines a Korean culture lesson plan teaching sijo through the musical "Swag Age: Shout out Joseon!" The class will be for learners of intermediate level and above, and consists of 4 sessions: 1) Understanding the overall plot of the musical, 2) Learning about Korean sijo, 3) Writing sijo based on your own life, and 4) Presenting your own sijo. This culture class is significant in that it goes beyond simply learning about sijo and enables students to internalize the meaning of and actively enjoy sijo by writing their own versions. In addition, it is expected to be a compelling class that, on top of its educational value, introduces and allows students to experience a wider range of Korean popular culture by adding the musical genre to the common repertoire of movies, dramas, plays, and pop songs often covered in Korean culture classes.

  • This study aims to analyze words and phrases which are frequently used in newsletters from Korean elementary schools. In order to achieve this goal, high frequent words from school newsletters were selected and classified into content and function words, and the domains of the words were looked up. For this study 1,000 school newsletters were collected in the areas of Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam. In terms of parts of speech, nouns, especially common nouns, most frequently appeared in the school newsletters followed by verbs and adjectives. This result shows that for immigrant women who have basic knowledge on Korean language, it is useful to give translated words to get the message of school letters. Furthermore, school related terms such as facilities, regulations and activities of school and Chinese-based vocabularies are found in school newsletters. In case of verbs, the words which contain the meaning of requests and suggestions are used the most. Adjectives which are related to positive value and evaluation, and describing weather and season is frequently used as well.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify differences in the report assessment patterns of international undergraduate students and instructors. Based on two sample reports, the following differences were confirmed between international students and instructors' assessments of reports. First, instructors and students showed no differences in their assessments of the well-formatted report. However, the two groups exhibited differences in their assessments of the report that was not well formatted in that students evaluated the report more highly than instructors did. Second, instructors and students exhibited notable differences in their assessments of items such as citation, logic, and expression. This may have been because students lacked knowledge on citation methods and the use of grounds for arguments based on citation methods and topics. Third, students and instructors showed differences in their areas of focus when evaluating reports. Instructors mostly focused on the main topics of each report, whereas students focused on supporting details for the main topics. Based on these findings, instructors need to emphasize the following areas in educating international undergraduate students on report writing. First, they should stress proper source citation. They should provide frequent guidance on how to accurately cite sources. Second, they should help students to first think about the overall form and content of their reports. Instructors should emphasize that having a logical overall report structure and content that is relevant to the subject is more important in general than grammar or accuracy of vocabulary.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how Korean students accept and use mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) and investigate related factors that potentially affect MALL usage. The participants were 244 undergraduate students who were surveyed with a questionnaire. The research model, which included students' self-efficacy, content reliability, interactivity, perceived enjoyment, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude, and behavioral intention to use MALL, was developed based on the technology acceptance model (TAM). The structural equation modeling (SEM) technique was employed in order to analyze the overall results of modified TAM and the research model. The results indicated that TAM was a good theoretical tool to understand students' acceptance of MALL. In addition, all constructs, with the exception of self-efficacy and interactivity, had significant effects on students' acceptance possibilities of MALL. Limitations and suggestions for the further study are also presented.

  • As IT technology develops rapidly and the personal dissemination of smart devices increases, video material is especially used as a medium of information transmission among audiovisual materials. Video as an information service content has become an indispensable element, and it has been used in various ways such as unidirectional delivery through TV, interactive service through the Internet, and audiovisual library borrowing. Especially, in the Internet environment, the information provider tries to reduce the effort and cost for the processing of the provided information in view of the video service through the smart device. In addition, users want to utilize only the desired parts because of the burden on excessive network usage, time and space constraints. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the usability of the video by automatically classifying, summarizing, and indexing similar parts of the contents. In this paper, we propose a method of automatically segmenting the shots that make up videos by analyzing the contents and characteristics of language education videos and indexing the detailed contents information of the linguistic videos by combining visual features. The accuracy of the semantic based shot segmentation is high, and it can be effectively applied to the summary service of language education videos.

  • In this paper, we implement an Android application for infant language education using marker-based augmented reality. Combining animal word markers (noun), size/color word markers (adjective), and action word markers (verb) in puzzle form to make a simple sentence, the application shows virtual contents related to the content of the sentence. For example, when an animal marker is showed up on a camera, the corresponding animal appears. Additionally, when the motion markers are combined, the animal's appearance changes into an animation in which it acts. When a user touched a marker, user can hear the sound of the word, which gives an auditory effect, and by adding the rotation function, user can see the animation in any direction. Our goal is to increase infants' interest in learning language and also increase the effectiveness of education on the meaning of words and the structure of simple sentences, by encouraging them to actively participate in language learning through visual and auditory stimuli.

  • In this study, elementary students' science communication competence was investigated based on the grammatical features expressed in their language-use in classroom discourse and science writings. The classes were designed to integrate the evidence-based reasoning framework and traditional learning cycle and were conducted on fifth graders in an elementary school. Eight elementary students' discourse data and writings were analyzed using lexico-grammatical resource analysis, which examined the discourse text's content and logical relations. The results revealed that the student language used in analyzing data, interpreting evidence, or constructing explanations did not precisely conform to the grammatical features in science language use. However, they provided examples of grammatical metaphors by nominalizing observed events in the classroom discourses and those of causal relations in their writings. Thus, elementary students can use science language grammatically from science language-use experiences through listening to a teacher's instructional discourses or recognizing the grammatical structures of science texts in workbooks. The opportunities in which elementary students experience the language-use model in science learning need to be offered to understand the appropriate language use in the epistemic context of evidence-based reasoning and learn literacy skills in science.

  • Recently, with the development of virtual and augmented reality technology, metaverse is emerging as a new paradigm that will lead the next-generation internet era, and social and economic activities are spreading around the game, entertainment, music, and content industries. Moreover, as non-face-to-face conversion accelerated after the outbreak of COVID-19, lifestyles and industrial sites are becoming untact and further rapidly becoming a metaverse. In particular, the application of metaverse to the education field is attracting attention because realistic classes using real-time voice conversations using avatars, 3D objects, and 360-degree images can increase immersion and overcome the limitations of distance education. This study examines the concept of metaverse and examines that education using metaverse can be an alternative that can increase the efficiency of education in the non-face-to-face era. In particular, it shows that it is effective in language education and suggests an actual metaverse-based Korea language education program.
