  • Purpose - This study aims to suggest strategies for Korean enterprises advancing into the Vietnam bakery market by analyzing the effects of perceived values on brand preference and purchase intention among Korean and Vietnamese consumers. Research design, data, and methodology - The perceived value model designed includes functional (price, quality), emotional, and social values. The survey collected data from 500 consumers in Seoul (Korea) and HoChiMinh (Vietnam). The SPSS 18.0 package was used for analysis. Results - First, among Vietnamese consumers, perceived value had a positive (+) effect on global brand preference in the order of functional value of quality, social value, and the functional value of price. However, from an ethnocentric trend and brand image origin, emotional value had a negative effect on global brand preference. In contrast, among Korean consumers, perceived value had a positive (+) effect on global brand preference in the order of functional value of quality, the functional value of price, and the social value. However, emotional value had no effect on global brand preference. Second, for both Korean and Vietnamese consumers, perceived value had a significant positive effect on purchase intention. Third, unlike the Korean consumer, for the Vietnamese consumer, global brand preference had a significant effect on purchase intention. Conclusions - The study implies the following. First, the Vietnamese bakery market has a high proportion of middle-aged customers in their 40s (64%). In terms of monthly income, there was a large proportion (40%) of high-income earners (over $325). Therefore, bakery consumption can be seen as concentrated among middle-aged and high-income consumers. Based on this, bakery strategies should include efforts to increase purchase prices as well as ways to attract local consumers (large cities). Second, unlike Korean consumers, among Vietnamese consumers, the resistance to a global brand based on emotional value (the ethnocentric tendency and brand image origin) can be seen as relatively low. Thus, in the case of the Vietnam bakery market, to increase a global brand's preference, the company should develop a differentiated strategy so that Vietnamese consumers can recognize it better, focusing on product quality, good service quality, and price in the local environment and on social value for social development. Third, in the case of the Vietnamese customer, we found that social value exerts the greatest influence on purchase intention. Therefore, a brand that engenders an image of building the local Vietnamese community can achieve a higher social value and influence purchase intention. In addition, although Vietnamese consumers have ethnocentric tendencies in terms of products, we found that if it is a preferred global brand then there are intentions to purchase. Fourth, in the case of Vietnam, if the preference for global brands is formed, consumer awareness may be connected to purchase intention. Therefore, global brands operating in Vietnam should pay attention to how to improve consumer preferences for global brands in order to increase purchase intention.

First, females more preferred Korean dried persimmons compared to men. Second, it was found that the housewife variable had a statistically significant positive effect at a significance level of 1% indicating that the degree of preference for Korean dried persimmons was higher compared to other occupations. Third, when the main place for purchasing dried persimmons was a department store or a large discount store, the analysis result showed a positive effect at a significance level of 1%. Finally, the Korean wave effect was found to have a statistically significant positive influence at a 1% significance level. In particular, it is worth noting that as the Taiwanese consumers' preference for the Korean Wave increased, the preference for Korean dried persimmons increased, which could be useful information for companies wishing to export Korean dried persimmon products to Taiwan. As a promotional plan for revitalizing Korean dried persimmons in Taiwan, conducting promotional events in conjunction with the Korean Wave, such as K-pop contests, and promoting persimmons that reflect Korean traditional culture should be considered.

  • Recently, extreme weather due to climate change has become more frequent, and increase of fine dust has worsen air quality in Korea. Therefore, not only negative perception on coal-fired power generation is dominant, but also the social acceptance of nuclear power generation declines. This study aims at deriving consumer preferences on the mid and long term power mix with various energy sources. Willingness to pay for each generation source was estimated and the preference heterogeneity of consumers was examined by using mixed logit and latent class models. Mixed logit estimation results show that the preference heterogeneity of consumers is especially large for the nuclear power relative to renewable or coal energy. According to the estimation results from the latent class model, group 1 prefers renewable energy while group 2 prefers coal energy. Group 3 shows lexicographic preference which means restricted rationality. As for the policy implication, it is necessary to understand the preference heterogeneity of consumer groups in planning the mid to long term power mix.

  • Keeping abreast with the latest consumer's trends, industries are focusing on sensibility aspects of products to meet consumer's needs. The car(?) seat cover fabrics are more closely related to human senses than anything else. This study attempted to investigate which seat cover fabric can give good feeling to consumers and to analyze their characteristics. Twelve kinds of jacquard fabric used for seat cover were selected. The Kawabata Evaluation System was used to measure the mechanical properties of 12 jacquard fabrics, and tactile sensibility(TS), and preference(P) determined by subjective evaluation of 160 participants were also utilized. The stepwise regression analysis was made to select the most significant mechanical properties, and some models for predicting tactile sensibility and preference was developed. The results are briefly summarized as follows: the most important parameter to choose seat cover fabric is a "hygienic property" and the other parameters are 'materials with color fastness', 'compressive property', 'color', 'antibacterial property', 'easy-care property'. The LogSMD, LogB, LC, EM were selected as significant mechanical properties affecting tactile sensibility. Also, the LC, LogB, LogSMD, LogWC, LogMMD were selected as significant mechanical properties affecting preference.

  • Purpose - Small independent brands from local companies often use underdog positioning to compete with established global brands. However, whether the effectiveness of underdog positioning of local businesses in the service sector remains insufficient. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the underdog effect on the preference of Korean consumers for individual service providers positioned as underdogs. Design/methodology - The author examines the research question of this study using a one-way ANOVA in three different positioning (underdog vs. top dog vs. control) between-subjects design, with a group of Korean participants. Findings - The experimental study shows that support for independent local (vs. global) service providers positioned as underdogs is straightforward. Using the lens of consumer identification with underdog biographies, this study found that consumers prefer small local service providers with passion and determination regardless of their disadvantages. Originality/value - To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first study to examine the effectiveness of underdog positioning in the context of individual service providers. As it competes with global service companies for domestic consumer preference in Korea, the findings have great implications for ensuring the sustainability of small local service providers.
