We focus on the investigations of the effect of social networks on the diffusion of innovations, in order to successfully bring innovations into markets. We begin with consideration of social system from Rogers(1995)' perspective, which includes the fifty-year sequential tradition of diffusion studies, and expand the conceptualization into a framework for thinking about the effect of social networks on the diffusion of innovations. We draw upon basic ideas from the research traditions of social network theory in sociology, and social identity theory in social psychology. Finally, we offer propositions for the future empirical researches. A better understanding of social networks can complement research on the diffusion of innovations and help in the development of a universal model of consumer response to innovations.
This study analyzes patenting practices in the pharmaceutical industry and the impacts of sequential innovation. The main argument of the research is that strategic patenting is common in the pharmaceutical sector and it is legal within the context of patent law. However, when these practices have negative effects on the competition process post-grant, the practices that are legal under patent law may come into conflict with antitrust laws, which are not applied. The study brings into question whether sequential patenting practices characteristic of the pharmaceutical industry encourage or discourage innovation, and moreover, the overall functionality of the patent system. Ultimately, the functionality of the patent system creates market incentives that neglect consumer, i.e., patient, welfare; potential solutions to deal with the shortcomings are discussed.
As the next generation of smartphone and tablet computers, wearable devices are currently being developed and available in market in various forms. Smart clothing is a wearable device that holds the greatest potential for future development but low in market penetration. This study was designed to identify factors that influence adoption and diffusion of smart clothing. In-depth interviews with potential consumers who were knowledgeable about and interested in smart clothing were conducted. A semantic network analysis method was used. The results showed that consumers perceived smart clothing as a garment rather than as a type of wearable device and had a positive perception of smart apparel as more convenient and advanced than functional apparel. At the same time, however, consumers had a negative perception of smart clothing as unnecessary, ugly, and injurious to health. Consumers also worried that wearing smart apparel over long periods of time would negatively impact their health. Factors affecting resistance to smart apparel included low utility, perceived risk, and lack of aesthetic completeness. Usefulness and convenience were factors that affected the acceptance of smart clothing. The innovativeness of the product was more influential than consumer innovativeness in the process of adoption and diffusion of smart clothing.
The purpose of this study was to explore consumption status of scented textile products and to determine differences in consumption behaviors of scented textile products among subject groups separated by demographic (sex, age) and lifestyle (health concern, fashion involvement, innovativenss) characteristics. A total of 530 consumers who had used scented textile products participated in the web survey for the study. Consumer data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, chi-square test, factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and LSD test. In the results, the most often used products were small commodities, socks, bedding, and underwear of hub and flower scents. Consumers considered a product test as the most crucial information source and scent as the most significant decision making factor for purchase. Demographic and lifestyle group differences were found in some of the product types in use as well as in purchase behaviors (total spending amount, purchase venue, information source, considering factors when purchasing). The applicability of the study result to the theory of innovation adoption was discussed. Marketing implications were suggested based on the study results.
In this paper, the factors influencing the differentiation of environment-friendly agricultural products from the intention of environment-friendly farming experience were analyzed through logit analysis. The main analysis results are summarized as follows. First, the contents to experience in environment-friendly agricultural innovation in Jeonnam province are environment-friendly agricultural product harvesting (33.8%), making food using environment-friendly agricultural products (24.1%) and environment-friendly ecological experience (20.1%). Second, significant variables affecting the intention to experience environment-friendly agriculture were analyzed as whether they were members of the consumer cooperative, whether they were children under the age of two, and whether they were children under the age of high school. In other words, it was analyzed that the more members of the consumer cooperative, the more families with children under the age of two, and the more families with student children, the more likely they are to participate in environment-friendly farming experiences. Third, significant variables that affect the recognition of the differentiation of environment-friendly agricultural products in Jeonnam province were found to be environment education and dual income. In other words, it is analyzed that consumers who receive environment education and dual-income families are more likely to recognize environment-friendly agricultural products in Jeonnam province differently than in other regions.
Purpose - The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of chatbots' innovation attributes on the innovation acceptance for consumers who have used chatbots to purchase fashion products that account for a large share of transactions in mobile shopping. Research design, data, and methodology - Data were collected from Korean consumers aged 20 to 49 who had experience using chatbots when purchasing fashion-related products via mobile circumstances. After a pilot survey of 31 customers, pre-questionnaire was revised for the final test, and the final questionnaire was distributed to 1,500 subjects. Out of these, 244 were retrieved. After excluding 48 inappropriate responses, 196 were used for statistical analysis. Frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, one-way ANOVA, regression analysis and independent t-test using SPSS 23.0 were employed for data analyses. Second, two factors were extracted for fashion leadership: fashion opinion leadership and fashion innovativeness. Two groups based on the fashion leadership were identified: active innovation adopters and passive innovation adopters. Third, relative advantages and compatibility, diversity, sensibility of innovation attributes were found to have effects on the innovation acceptance in order. Fourth, significant differences were found in sensibility of innovation attributes and innovation acceptance in groups by marital status and age. The married in their 30s and 40s perceived sensibility as a more important attribute of chatbots than the unmarried in their twenties. Among the groups of different income levels, meaningful differences were found in diversity of innovation attributes and innovation acceptance. Fifth, there were significant differences found in relative advantages and compatibility, sensibility of innovation attributes, and acceptance of Innovation among the groups by fashion leadership. Active innovation adopters were found to be more aware of the importance of relative advantages and compatibility, and sensibility of innovation attributes, and innovation acceptance. Conclusions - The present study provides chatbots' marketing strategies for fashion items need to be modified by demographic characteristics and fashion leadership. Particularly, fashion leadership was found to be an important factor in determining the perception of innovation attribute as well as innovation acceptance.
