Improved nodal equivalence with leakage-corrected cross sections and discontinuity factors for PWR depletion analysis

  • This paper introduces a new two-step procedure for PWR depletion analyses. This procedure adopts the albedo-corrected parameterized equivalence constants (APEC) method to correct the lattice-based raw cross sections (XSs) and discontinuity factors (DFs) by accounting for neutron leakage. The intrinsic limitations of the conventional two-step methods are discussed by analyzing a 2-dimensional SMR with the commercial DeCART2D/MASTER code system. For a full-scope development of the APEC correction, the MASTER nodal code was modified so that the group constants can be corrected in the middle of a microscopic core depletion. The basic APEC methodology is described and color-set problems are defined to determine the APEC functions for burnup-dependent XS and DF corrections. Then the new two-step method was applied to depletion analyses of the SMR without thermal feedback, and its validity was evaluated in terms of being able to predict accurately the reactor eigenvalue and nodal power profile. In addition, four variants of the original SMR core were also analyzed for a further evaluation of the APEC-assisted depletion. In this work, several combinations of the burnup-dependent and -independent XS and DF corrections were also considered. The results show that the APEC method could enhance the nodal equivalence significantly with inexpensive additional costs.

Temperature Dependence of the Rate Constants of the VV Energy Exchange for N$_2$(v=1)+O$_2$(v=0)$\rightarrow$N$_2$(v=0)+O$_2$(v=1)

  • The vibration-vibration energy exchange of $N_2(v=1)+O_2(v=0){\to}N_2(v=0)+O_2(v=1)$ has been investigated, in particular, at low temperatures. The energy exchange rate constants are calculated by use of the solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation with the interaction potential of the colliding molecule as a perturbation term. The predicted rate constants are significantly agree with a experimental values in the range of 295∼$90^{\circ}K$. The consideration of the VV-VT coupling decreases the predicted pure VV energy exchange value by a factor of ∼2. When the collision frequency correction is introduced, the VV-VT rate constant is consistent with the observed value in the liquid phase. The consideration of the population of the rotational energy level increases the VV-VT value significantly.

In fluency on Refraction and Phase Cancellation Effect in Ultrasonic CT and its Correction (초음파 CT에서의 굴절 및 위상 상쇄 효과의 영향과 그 보정법)

  • Although ultrasonic CT is one of the useful techniques for tissue characterization, the reconstructed images, such as the velocity distribution and attenuation constant distribution, are degraded by reflection and refraction of ultrasonic beam. This paper studied the degradation effects on attenuation images using agar gel phantoms which were developed to evaluate ultrasonic CT. We found that the reconstructed attenuation constants at the center of the phantoms were less than the actual values by 0.6 dB/cm when phantom velocity differs by 25 m/s from surrounding saline. We also studied a correction method for refraction and phase cancellation effects, where the correction was made using the maximum value in the received subdata, as obtained by sub-arraying microprobes located at each sampling point. Using this method, we could obtain an improvement in the reconstructed image by the correction on the attenuation effect.

Deriving the Rate Constants of Coal Char-CO2 Gasification using Pressurized Drop Tube Furnace (가압 DTF를 이용한 석탄 촤-CO2 가스화 반응상수 도출)

  • This study investigates the gasification of coal char by $CO_2$ under high pressures in a drop tube furnace(DTF). The rate constants are derived for the shrinking core model using the conventional method based on the set reactor conditions. The computational fluid dynamic(CFD) simulations adopting the rate constants revealed that the carbon conversion was much slower than the experimental results, especially under high temperature and high partial pressure of reactants. Three reasons were identified for the discrepancy: i) shorter reaction time because of the entry region for heating, ii) lower particle temperature by the endothermic reaction, and iii) lower partial pressure of $CO_2$ by its consumption. Therefore, the rate constants were corrected based on the actual reaction conditions of the char. The CFD results updated using the corrected rate constants well matched with the measured values. Such correction of reaction conditions in a DTF is essential in deriving rate constants for any char conversion models by $H_2O$ and $O_2$ as well as $CO_2$.

  • The spectral correction matrix has been established to study the simultaneous complextions between metals and a ligand, and it eliminated the mutual influence among the complexes. The two sensitive reations between iron(Ⅱ) and 1-(6-bromo-2-benzothiazolylazo)-2-naphthol(BBTAN) and zinc (Ⅱ) and BBTAN have been investigated and applied to the simultaneous determination of Zn and Fe at pH 8.5 in the presence of triton x-100. This method gave the simples determination of the characteristic constants of the complexes. For the analysis of natural water, foods and other samoles, the recoveries of Fe and Zn were between 92 and 109% and between 91 and 104%, and their relative standard deviations were less than 5.5 and 11%, respectively.

An Experimental Study of Test Section Velocity Calibration for Low-Speed Wind Tunnel (저속풍동 시험부 속도교정에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to determine the calibration constants of the wind speed measurement systems required to calculate the wind tunnel velocity in the test section. In the present work, the aerodynamic calibration tests of the test section were conducted in the Agency for Defense Development's Low-Speed Wind Tunnel. The test speed ranged from 10 to 100 m/s with a reference pitot-static pressure probe. The validity of the calibration results was evaluated by comparing them with the previous calibration constants. The calibration results show that fair to good agreement is obtained with resonable accuracy.

  • Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency(KHOA) carried out a research project named 'Marine Fisheries Infrastructure Construction and Technology Training for the Philippines' as part of the 1st Official Development Assistance(ODA) from 2015 to 2018. It is preparing for the 2nd ODA project which will begin in 2020. Besides, recently, the Philippines is paying attention to marine territory management and response capability due to problems such as the sea-level rise and coastal erosion caused by climate change. Therefore, before 2nd ODA to the Philippines, this study analyzed the vertical ocean model on the vertical datum in Korea and suggests the direction of development of the vertical ocean modeling system for the vertical datum in the Philippines using the observed data from the permanent tide station which was built by the Philippines ODA research project over the last four years. Moreover, as a pilot study, the Sulu Sea in the Philippines was selected and analyzed by harmonic analysis method. At each tide station, constants for correction had been computed. And the grid-based tidal model was constructed based on this study. As a result of the study, similar tidal characteristic were observed when the prediction and the measured tide were compared by applying the constants for correction between two station in the sea area with similar tidal level. These results could be used as basic data for the 2nd ODA to the Philippines, and contributed to construct and maintain a close cooperation and friendship between Korea and the Philippines.

  • For a large scale civil and architectural structures, mainly steel, concrete and aluminum have been used and weight and corrosion of materials became a major concern. Designing with composite materials is very much complicated. Simple classical theory may yield good results for selecting "initial" sections for preliminary design. D. H. Kim proposed to use the quasi-isotropic constants by Tsai for the preliminary design of the composite primary structures for the civil construction. Also he made simple equation using correction factor. In this paper, the simple formulas developed by D. H. Kim to obtain "exact" values of the natural frequencies of [ABBCAAB]r laminate are compared with Whitney's equations. Also natural frequencies of the plate with varying aspect ratios and reinforcing fiber orientations, are compared with natural frequencies of bean. This work can be a guideline to obtain data in many other cases.

  • Simple equations which can predict "exact" values of the natural frequency of vibration for the special orthotropic laminates are presented. Many laminates with certain orientations have decreasing values of $B_{16}$ and $B_{26}$ as the number of plies increases. Such laminates, with $D_{16}=D_{26}{\rightarrow}0$, including the laminates with anti-symmetric configurations can be solved by the same equation for the special orthotropic laminates. If the quasi-isotropic constants are used, the equations for the isotropic plates can be used. Use of some coefficients cab produce "exact" value for laminates with such configurations. Natural frequencies of the plate with varying aspect ratios is presented.

Computational Procedure for Sea Subface Topography of East Asian Marginal Seas using Geosat Altimeter Data (Geosat 고도계자료를 이용한 동아시아해역의 해면변위 산정법)

  • As satellite altimetry is being progressed to apply with heigher precision to maginal seas, it was necessary to improve correction procedures for tidal signals in altimetry with more accurate tidal model than well-known model of Schwiderski for studying marginal sea dynamics. As a first step, tidal regime of semidiurnal tides$(M_2,\;S_2,\;N_2,\;K_2)$ and diurnal tides$(K_1,\;O_1,\;P_1,\;Q_1)$ were computed with a finer details of formulation of tidal model over the East Asian Marginal Seas covering the Okhotsk Sea and South China Sea and part of Northwest Pacific Ocean with mesh resolutions of 1/6$^{\circ}$. Subsequently the computed sets of harmonic constants from the model were used to remove the tide in selected Sea Surface Heights from Geosat in the modelled region. Preliminary correction procedure suggested in the present study may be extensively used for obtaining Sea Surface Topography over the East Asian Marginal Seas, especially for the region where Schwiderski's harmonic constants are not available.
