  • Accurate calculation of the conduction and switching losses of a power electronic converter is required to achieve the efficiency of the converter. Such calculation is also useful for computing the junction temperature of the switches. A few models have been developed in the articles for calculating the switching energy losses during switching transitions for the given values of switched voltage and switched current. In this study, these models are comprehensively reviewed and investigated for the first time for ease of comparison among them. These models are used for calculating the average amount of switching power losses. However, some points and details should be considered in utilizing these models when switched current or switched voltage presents time-variant and alternative quantity. Therefore, an applicable technique is proposed in details to use these models under the above-mentioned conditions. A proper switching loss model and the presented technique are used to establish a new and fast method for obtaining the average switching power losses in any type of power electronic converters. The accuracy of the proposed method is evaluated by comprehensive simulation studies and experimental results.

  • This paper investigates analytical models of Conduction and Switching Losses (CASLs) of a matrix-Z-source converter (MZC). Two analytical models of the CASLs are obtained through the examination of operating principles for a Z-source inverter and ac-dc matrix converter respectively. Based on the two models, the analytical model of CASLs for a MZC is constructed and visualized over a range of exemplified operating- points, each of which is defined by the combination of power factor (pt) and modulation index (M). The model provides a measurable way to approximate the total losses of the MZC.

  • Comparison of the heat conduction into a trapezoidal fin and the heat loss from the fin by convection is made in this study Also, the ratio of heat loss from each surface to the total heat loss and the temperature distribution are analyzed using a 3-D analytical method. A trapezoidal fin whose tip height is half the root height is chosen as the model. The results show that the heat transfer rates from the tip and from both sides are comparable with each other as the non-dimensional width and length vary while the heat transfer rate from the bottom and top is dominant.

  • The precise and reliable loss model for induction motor and converter system is very important in order to predict the efficiency performance of variable speed drives. This paper proposes an accurate loss model of induction motor and converter system. The motor losses, such as stator and rotor copper loss, core loss and stray loss, are considered for fundamental and harmonic frequencies. Also considered are the skin effect on rotor resistance, temperature effect on bath stator and rotor resistance, magnetizing inductance saturation, and friction and windage loss. All the above features are incorporated in a synchronous frame dynamic d-q equivalent circuit. The converter system, consisting of a diode rectifier and PWM transistor inverter, is modeled accurately for conduction and switching losses. Validity of the models, in both steady state and transient conditions, is verified by simulations.

  • Due to high power ratings and low conduction loss, the IGBT has become more attractive in switching power supplies. However, its turn-on and turn-off characteristics cause severe switching loss and switching frequency limitation. This paper proposes 2.4kW, 48V, high efficiency half-bridge DC-DC converter using paralleled IGBT-MOSFET switch concept, where each of IGBT and MOSFET plays its part during on-periods and switching instants. The switching loss is analyzed by using the linearized model and the opteration of the converter are investigated by simulation results.

  • The winding loss analysis of a flyback transformer is difficult and ambiguous because the primary side current and the secondary side current differs both in shape and phase, especially for DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) operation. Meanwhile, the fringing field caused by the air gaps further makes the traditional 1-D loss analysis model not directly applicable. The paper gives a thorough investigation into the phase shift of winding currents, which indicates that the phase shift of the high order harmonics is still close to $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase. Based on the analysis, a simplified 2-D winding loss analytical model for flyback transformers considering the effects of low order harmonics is proposed. By neglecting the y components of the fringing field, the proposed model has an acceptable accuracy and a simple form that is similar to the conventional 1-D model. The power loss calculated with the proposed analysis model is verified by FEA (Finite Element Analysis) simulations and experimental results.

  • In this paper two aspects of the percolation and conductivity of carbon black-filled polyethylene matrix composites will be discussed. Firstly, the percolation behavior, the critical exponent of conductivity of these composites, are discussed based on studying the whole change of resistivity, the relationship between frequency and relative permittivity or ac conductivity. There are two transitions of resistivity for carbon black filling. Below the first transition, resistivity shows an ohmic behavior and its value is almost the same as that of the matrix. Between the first and second transition, the change in resistivity is very sharp, and a non-ohmic electric field dependence of current has been observed. Secondly, the electrical conduction property of the carbon black-filled polyethylene matrix composites below the percolation threshold is discussed with the hopping conduction model. This study investigates the electrical conduction property of the composites below the percolation threshold based on the frequency dependence of conductivity in the range of 20 Hz to 1 MHz. There are two components for the observed ac loss current. One is independent of frequency that becomes prevalent in low frequencies just below the percolation threshold and under a high electrical field. The other is proportional to the frequency of the applied ac voltage in high frequencies and its origin is not clear. These results support the conclusion that the electrical conduction mechanism below the percolation threshold is tunneling.

  • The power loss of the controllable switches in modular multilevel converter (MMC) HVDC transmission systems is an important factor, which can determine the design of the operating junction temperatures. Due to the dc current component, the approximate calculation tool provided by the manufacturer of the switches cannot be used for the losses of the switches in the MMC. Based on the enabled probabilities of each SM in an arm, the current analytical models of the switches can be determined. The average and RMS currents can be obtained from the corresponding current analytical model. Then, the conduction losses can be calculated, and the switching losses of the switches can be estimated according to the upper limit of the switching frequency. Finally, the thermal resistance model of the switches can be utilized, and the junction temperatures can be estimated. A comparison between the calculation and PSCAD simulation results shows that the proposed method is effective for estimating the junction temperatures of the switches in the MMC.
