  • Although asymptotic bounds of wireless network capacity have been heavily pursued, the answers to the following questions are still critical for network planning, protocol and architecture design: Given a three-dimensional (3D) network space with the number of active users randomly located in the space and using the wireless communication technology, what are the expected per-flow throughput, network capacity, and network transport capacity? In addition, how can the protocol parameters be tuned to enhance network performance? In this paper, we focus on the ultra wideband (UWB) based wireless personal area networks (WPANs) and provide answers to these questions, considering the salient features of UWB communications, i.e., low transmission/interference power level, accurate ranging capability, etc. Specifically, we demonstrate how to explore the spatial multiplexing gain of UWB networks by allowing appropriate concurrent transmissions. Given 3D space and the number of active users, we derive the expected number of concurrent transmissions, network capacity and transport capacity of the UWB network. The results reveal the main factors affecting network (transport) capacity, and how to determine the best protocol parameters, e.g., exclusive region size, in order to maximize the capacity. Extensive simulation results are given to validate the analytical results.

  • In this paper, we present an analytical and simulated study on the performance of adaptive vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) priority based on Transmission Distance Reliability Range (TDRR) and data type. VANET topology changes rapidly due to its inherent nature of high mobility nodes and unpredictable environments. Therefore, nodes in VANET must be able to adapt to the ever changing environment and optimize parameters to enhance performance. However, there is a lack of adaptability in the current VANET scheme. Existing VANET IEEE802.11p's Enhanced Distributed Channel Access; EDCA assigns priority solely based on data type. In this paper, we propose a new priority scheme which utilizes Markov model to perform TDRR prediction and assign priorities based on the proposed Markov TDRR Prediction with Enhanced Priority VANET Scheme (MarPVS). Subsequently, we performed an analytical study on MarPVS performance modeling. In particular, considering five different priority levels defined in MarPVS, we derived the probability of successful transmission, the number of low priority messages in back off process and concurrent low priority transmission. Finally, the results are used to derive the average transmission delay for data types defined in MarPVS. Numerical results are provided along with simulation results which confirm the accuracy of the proposed analysis. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MarPVS results in lower transmission latency and higher packet success rate in comparison with the default IEEE802.11p scheme and greedy scheduler scheme.

  • We evaluate the sink capacity of wireless code division multiple access (CDMA) sensor networks with layered architecture. We introduce a model of interference at a sink considering two kinds of interference: multiple access interference (MAI) and node interference (NI). We also investigate the activity of sensor nodes around the sink in relation to gathering data under a layered architecture. Based on the interference model and the activity of sensor nodes around the sink, we derive the failure probability of the transmission from a source node located one hop away from the sink using Gaussian approximation. Under the requirement of 1% failure probability of transmission, we determine the sink capacity, which is defined as the maximum number of concurrent sensor nodes located one hop away from the sink. We demonstrate that as the node activity of the MAI decreases, the variation of the sink capacity due to the node activity of the NI becomes more significant. The analysis results are verified through computer simulations.

  • In this paper, we investigate the effect of the retransmission limit both the system capacity and the average number of retransmissions in a voice/data DS-CDMA system. Basically, we consider the IS-95 type reverse link of the CDMA system, which supports two kinds of services: a general voice and a packetized data service. ARQ is used for the reliable data transmission. Convolutional code is used for FEC and CRC-CCITT code is used for the error detection in ARQ. The result shows that the number of concurrent data users decreases as we reduce the number of the retransmissions. However, at the same time, we can also reduce the average number of retransmissions. Concluding1y, we can select the retransmission limit so as to reduce large amount of' retransmissions with small sacrifice in the system capacity.

  • The metaverse is expected to evolve into an immersive environment based on photorealistic stereoscopic imaging to integrate real and virtual worlds. To transition from flat images to immersive stereoscopic images, such as light fields and holograms, a continuous cycle of technological development should be reached in media, content, and device technologies, ranging from acquisition and generation to transmission and synthesis as well as reproduction and interaction. Additionally, owing to the multitude of components involved in the metaverse, proper service realization will be challenging without concurrent advancements in computing and communication technologies that facilitate the integration of such components. We introduce research and development trends in media, contents, and devices at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute toward the next generation of stereoscopic images.

  • MQTT provides three QoS levels on top of the TCP/IP layer to ensure message delivery reliability. However, in an environment where messages are concurrently transmitted and received in a node, messages are lost due to the delivery method for QoS level. In this paper, it construct an experimental environment in which MQTT generates concurrently messages, and confirm the message reliability according to QoS level. Therefore, we analyze the message reception ratio on the subscriber side by changing number of publisher and transmission cycle of message. Experimental results show that the message reception ratio of 1 and 2 except QoS level 0 decreases as the number of publisher increases or the message transmission cycle increases.

  • This paper presents a design of a backbone network which uses a rigister-Insertion ring structure, The introduction of a high speed register in sertton backbone ring enables high performance inter-network 4ommunicatlons In a simple and modular structure at low cost and Its concurrent communications.. Two or more bridge nodes can be used to construct a register Insertion backbone ring network. The high bandwidth of the backbone ring sup ports heavy traffic for Inter-segment Eornrnunicatlons. The bridge node does both local address filtering to block data entering the ring and remote address filtering to block data entering the local LAN segment . Title local address greatly reduces the rate on the backbone ring and the remote address filterlng greatly reduces the traffic rate on each LAN segment. An feature makes the network the network reconflguratlon simpler and transparent to users. A throughput analysis Is used to deterrune the bandwidth of the backbone rlr)g transmission medium.

  • Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have gained a lot of attention recently. Based on the characteristic of WMNs as a highly connected wireless infrastructure, many efforts from research organizations are made in order to improve the performance of the flow throughput in WMNs. Therefore, it is very critical issue to establish efficient routing paths for multiple concurrent ongoing flows. In this paper, we propose a general modeling methodology to analyze the end-to-end throughput of multiple concurrent flows by analytical calculation taking into account the carrier sensing behaviors, interference and the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function mechanism. After the comparison of the average service time for each successful transmission at each node, we analyze the bottlenecks of flows, and hence obtain the maximum end-to-end throughput of them. By using our proposed model, it is possible to predicate the throughput of several candidate routing paths for multiple concurrent ongoing data flows, so we can select the most efficient route that can achieve the highest throughput. We carry out simulations with various traffic patterns of multiple flows in WMNs to validate our modeling and our efficient route selection mechanism.

  • In this paper, we propose scheduling algorithms for transporting variable-bit-rate video stream using playback buffer level of the clients over wireless communication networks. The proposed algorithms attempt to maximize the utilization of limited bandwidth between the central video server and the clients over a mobile network. Since a video server may serve several video request at the same time, it is important to allocate and utilize network bandwidth to serve them fairly and efficiently. In order to improve the quality of service and real-time performance of individual video playback, the video server attempts to allocate temporarily more network bandwidth to serve a video request with the lower buffer level preferentially. The simulation results prove the fair service and load balancing among the mobile concurrent clients with different buffer levels and hence maximizing the number of frames that are transported successfully to the client prior to their playback times.
