Computational Flow Analysis around Coaxial Rotor Blades with Various Ducts (덕트형상에 따른 동축반전 로터블레이드 주위의 전산유동해석)

  • Regarding the aircrafts with a rotor blade system, the miniaturization of them is limited due to the rotor blade length and the tail rotor system. To miniaturize an aircraft, an equipment is required that increases thrust and also shortens the length of the rotor blade. The present study will conduct the flow analysis for miniaturizing the aircraft by applying a duct to the coaxial rotor blade system without tail rotor. First, the verification on the calculated results was conducted through the computational flow analysis on the coaxial rotor blade system without a duct. Then, the flow analysis for the coaxial rotor blade systems was performed including Ka-60 duct, Single duct, Twin duct, and Double duct, respectively. From the numerical results, the thrust coefficient appeared higher with the duct than without a duct for the coaxial rotor blade system. Especially, in the case of Double duct, the thrust was improved due to the increase of incoming flow and the extension of the wake area. These results will be used as the basic concepts for miniaturizing the aircraft with the rotor blade system. The flow analysis on the coaxial rotor blade system including the fuselage remains as a future work.

Computational Flow Analysis with Geometric and Operating Conditions of Air Lift Pump (기포펌프의 형상 및 작동 조건에 따른 전산유동해석)

  • Air lift pump operated by buoyancy is mainly used for the continuous circulation and the purification of fluids. In this study, the computational flow analysis has been performed with the geometric and operating conditions of the air lift pump. The numerical data from the analysis have been verified by comparing with the previous experimental data. The following results are obtained which advance the efficiency of the air lift pump. As the submergence length of pipe increases and the pipe length over the water surface decreases, the non-dimensional mass flow ratio increases in both cases. When the position of the air injection hole is within the pipe, the circulation range of the surrounding fluid becomes widened with the distance between the air injection hole and the pipe inlet relatively becoming narrower. It is more efficient both when the air injection velocity is at 10 m/s and at 15 m/s, and when the diameter of the pipe with holes is doubled near the water surface. It is expected that these results can be provided as fundamental data for operating the air lift pump.

Fast Graphic Visualization of Frequency Response for Audio Equalizer (오디오 이퀄라이저를 위한 주파수 응답의 고속 그래픽 표현 방법)

  • This paper proposes a new method for fast graphic visualization of accurate frequency response of audio equalizer (EQ). When a logarithmic frequency scale is used, a frequency response in high resolution is required for accurate low-band frequency response. However, the high-resolution frequency response requires a huge amount of computational load, which makes the real-time graphic visualization of frequency response impossible. In order to solve the problem of computational load, the proposed method utilizes a low-resolution virtual frequency response in the mid band. It first computes the virtual frequency response of each filter of EQ in the mid band, and then moves it to the target band so that the result corresponds to the desired filter response. Then, it determines the final frequency response of EQ by combining all filter responses. The experiments confirm that the proposed method provides the frequency response of EQ which has an equivalent shape to that computed in high frequency resolution with huge computational load.

Heterogeneous Computation on Mobile Processor for Real-time Signal Processing and Visualization of Optical Coherence Tomography Images

  • We have developed a high-performance signal-processing and image-rendering heterogeneous computation system for optical coherence tomography (OCT) on mobile processor. In this paper, we reveal it by demonstrating real-time OCT image processing using a Snapdragon 800 mobile processor, with the introduction of a heterogeneous image visualization architecture (HIVA) to accelerate the signal-processing and image-visualization procedures. HIVA has been designed to maximize the computational performances of a mobile processor by using a native language compiler, which targets mobile processor, to directly access mobile-processor computing resources and the open computing language (OpenCL) for heterogeneous computation. The developed mobile image processing platform requires only 25 ms to produce an OCT image from $512{\times}1024$ OCT data. This is 617 times faster than the naïve approach without HIVA, which requires more than 15 s. The developed platform can produce 40 OCT images per second, to facilitate real-time mobile OCT image visualization. We believe this study would facilitate the development of portable diagnostic image visualization with medical imaging modality, which requires computationally expensive procedures, using a mobile processor.

Optimization study on fuel cell cathode oxygen flow path for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle using computational visualization (전산 가시화를 통한 무인 항공기용 연료전지 양극 산소 유로 최적화 연구)

  • Numerical visualization is conducted to confirm the variation of flow characteristics and pressure drop by the shape of channels on the cathode flow path in hydrogen fuel cells for unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs). Generally, a light-weight fan is commonly used rather than a heavy air compressor at UAVS. However, in case of blower fan, a large pressure drop in the flow path causes the blocking of the oxygen supply to the fuel cell. Therefore, the uniformity of flow inside the cathode has to be achieved by changing the shape of the cathode. The flow channel, the duct shape, and the diameter of the fan are changed to optimize the flow path. As a result, it is confirmed that the optimal flow path can decrease the velocity difference between the center and outer flow by 1.8%. However, It should be noted that the channel size can increase the pressure drop.

Improving Computational Thinking Comprehension through Visualized Sorting App Development

  • Computational thinking refers to the process and method of solving everyday problems using computers. When teaching a computational thinking class for computer majors and non-majors at university, the easiest example to deliver the concept of computational thinking is sorting. Sorting is the concept of arranging given data in order. In this work, we have implemented four visualized sorting algorithms that anyone can easily use. In particular, it helps to understand the difference between the algorithms by showing the number of comparisons and exchanges between elements, which are the criteria for evaluating the performance of the sorting algorithm in real time. It was confirmed that the practice of using the sorting visualization app developed in this research contributed to the improvement of students' understanding of computational thinking.

A Comparison Study of CFD Analysis and Flow Visualization on Behavior of Liquid Water in Cathode Channels of PEM Fuel Cells (PEM 연료전지 공기극 유로에서 물의 거동에 대한 CFD 해석과 가시화 실험의 비교 연구)

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells are promising power generation devices which are ideal for residential and automobile applications, thanks to their fast transient characteristics. However, liquid water produced in PEM fuel cells should be properly managed to enhance the performances and durabilities of the cells. In this study, a visualization experiment was conducted to investigate the flow behavior of water droplets in cathode channels. The visualization experiment was done with four different model flow channels which were made by varying the material (Acrylic and Teflon) and the channel width (1 mm and 2 mm). Acrylic is hydrophilic (contact angle is about $80^{\circ}$) while Teflon is hydrophobic (contact angle is about $120^{\circ}$). A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was also performed to compare the observed and the simulated two-phase water/air flow characteristics in cathode channels. The computational models were made to be consistent with the geometries and surface properties of the model flow channels. Both the experimental and numerical results showed that the Teflon cathode channel with 1 mm width has the best water management performance among four model flow channels considered. A close correlation was found between the experimental visualization results and the numerical CFD simulation results.

A VORTICAL WAKE VISUALIZATION METHOD BASED ON THE VORTICITY FIELD (와도장에 근거한 후류 가시화 기법)

  • In this study, a vortex visualization method based on the vorticity magnitude is developed. One of the simplest models for a vortex is a vortex filament with the maximum vorticity on its center. The proposed method is based on the observation of this ideal distribution of vorticity magnitude. Laplacian and Hessian matrix of vorticity magnitude are tested for detecting the local maximum of vorticity magnitude. These ideas were applied to wake flow past a sphere. It was found that the Laplacian method is not able to distinguish vortices from the underlying shear layer clearly, while the Hessian matrix method does not suffer from this problem.

  • Thermal comfort inside a passenger car has been receiving large attention in automobile industries. Especially, the performance of windshield defroster is important in the design of a car to ensure passenger comport and safety. Thereby, better understanding on the ventilation flow along the vehicle windshield is essential to evaluate the performance of windshield defroster. However, most previous studies dealt with the defrost flow using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) calculations or scale-down model experiments. In this study, a real commercial automobile was used to investigate the flow discharged from the vehicle defroster and the ventilation flow along the windshield using a PIV velocity field measurement technique. The experimental data would be useful to understand the flow characteristics in detail and also can be used to validate numerical predictions.

Mass Conservative Fluid Flow Visualization for CFD Velocity Fields

  • Mass conservation is a key issue for accurate streamline and stream surface visualization of flow fields. This paper complements an existing method (Feng et al. 1997) for CFD velocity fields defined at discrete locations in space that uses dual stream functions to generate streamlines and stream surfaces. Conditions for using the method have been examined and its limitations defined. A complete set of dual stream functions for all possible cases of the linear fields on which the method relies are presented. The results in this paper are important for developing new methods for mass conservative streamline visualization from CFD and using the existing method.
