  • This study was executed to evaluate the utilization and efficiency of the ceramic biocarrier as the promoter of decomposing on the organic matters for the composting using with pig manure by analyzing of the physico-chemical properties during composting. The treatments of this experiment were consisted of the control(C),microorganism(M), M with natural zeolite(M+Z), M with synthesized zeolite(M+SZ), and M with ceramic biocarrier(M+CZ). The process term of composting was conducted for 30days in the rapidly fermented machine(as pilot system). The results of the physico-chemical properties of the composts were as follows. The changes of temperature during composting was not relative with the microorganism and zeolite materials used in the composts. At all of the treatments were similar to changing of temp. from the initial stage to the final stage. But the added microorganism treatments were higher than control. And the entire pH value of treatments were appeared the same that above temperature result, also the M+CZ and M+SZ treatment among the treatment were higher. At the results of T-C, T-N and C/N ratio, in case of T-C value, the M+CZ treatment was highly more decreased than others. However at the T-N value, there were not the differences from the each treatment. And the C/N ratio was changed according to the changes of T-C and T-N value. Especially, at the M+CZ aud M+SZ treatments were remarkably reduced by about 21.4-23.3 value. In the result of G.I for evaluating of the compost humidity, the M+CZ and M+SZ treatments were close up approximately 110 value compared with the control(G.I value 100). Therefore, the examined ceramic biocarrier amended with compost-promoting-bacteria could be applied to the production of many high quality fertilizers. It is also expected that the results of this researches could be applied to the recycle of the organic wastes based on the experimental results of ceramic biocarrier and compost-promoting-bacteria application.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate possibility for composting by microorganisms in food waste itself. In the result of counting of microorgansm in food waste, the number of bacteria growing at $30^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$ were counted $10^5-10^7CFU/g$ and $10^5-10^6\;CFU/g$ in the almost food waste, respectively. Amylase and protease producing microorgansim were counted $10^3-10^7\;CFU/g$ at $30^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$. In the result of composting for 30 days, FW1 was reveal that $CO_2$gas production rate and degradation of organic matter were similar to FW2 but higher than that of FW3, FM1 and FM2. Also, In the cases of change of enzyme producing microorgansim during the composting, FW1 were counted $10^5-10^9\;CFU/g$ at $30^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ of incubation temperature, while FM1, added to commercial microbial inoculator, were less than that of FM1. Consequently, It was suggested that FW1 was most suitable condition for composting by microorganisms in food waste and there was no need to use microbial inoculator for composting.

  • This study was performed to investigate the concentration variation of airborne bacteria and endotoxin by the temperature in the compost pile in order to identify the generation characteristics of biological factors in the exhaust gases generated from lab-scale sludge compositing reactors (0.06 $m^3$ of total reactor volume). Airborne bacteria showed the highest concentration of generation ($1.03{\times}10^5\;CFU/m^3$) in the composting reactor without mechanical agitation, and similar change tendency to temperature variation of composting, but somewhat lower statistical significance (p>0.05). In the compost reactor with mechanical agitation, endotoxin showed similar generation characteristic to temperature variation of composting (statistical significance; p<0.05) and the highest generation concentration to 1,415 EU/$m^3$. Mechanical agitation of the composting process affected activity of microorganism and positive generation of endotoxin in exhaust gases. Endotoxin and airborne bacteria showed similar tendency of generation, especially the highest statistical correlation was observed in the compost reactor without mechanical agitation (statistical significance: p<0.01).

  • In this study, we analyzed the densities and taxonomic characteristics of various microorganisms that play important roles in Agaricus bisporus culture medium composting, and examined changes in the levels of decomposition-related enzymes secreted by these microorganisms. Various microorganisms such as thermophilic bacteria, actinomycetes, fluorescent Pseudomonas spp., and filamentous bacteria are closely associated with culture medium composts of Agaricus bisporus. The population densities of microorganisms change, and harmful bacteria disappear during thermophilic composting. Psychrobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp., Bacillus sp., and Pseudoxanthomonas sp. accounted for the highest proportion of bacteria in the culture media during outdoor composting, whereas Bacillus sp. and Psychrobacillus sp. were dominant after pasteurization. Cellulose and hemicellulose enzymes of the microorganisms were important at an early stage of rice straw composting and after decomposition of carbon sources, respectively. Microorganisms that secreted these enzymes were present in the second and third turning stage of composting.

  • The microflora changes of 10 water-controled treatments combined with livestock manures(pig, chicken) and bulking agents(sawdust, paper sludge) were investigated. The B/F values of the P-1 and C-1(65%, $H_2O$) treatments were 3571 and 5400 respectively, but those of the P-4 and C-4(50%, $H_2O$) treatments showed very low values, 667 and 334, respectively. The B/F values tended to increase with higher water content of the treatments. In the composting processes, the successions of microflora, adapting the compost environments, took place via fluctuating temperature. In the high temperature period, the numbers of mesophilic bacteria and fungi decreased, but that of the spore forming bacteria increased. However, the number of mesophilic bacteria inereased during the cold period. The B/F values of compost ranged 25-300, which indicates a decrease in the quantity of bacteria. The time required for the temperature of compost to reach $60^{\circ}C$ showed different patterns. There was no pathogenic microorganism in the treatments which reached a high temperature in a short period of time, but, in the treatments which reached a high temperature over a Long period of time, the pathgenic microorganism was not still alive.

  • Existing composting system was improved to have a high performance for organic degradation, deodorization and energy reduction. Compared with conventional devices, this developed system uses the heat recovered from platinum catalytic tower by three times heat exchange in which 65% of exhaust gas was recirculated. Evaporation of water was made easy by maintaining negative pressure in entire system. It was possible for reaction to be maintained steadily by microorganism agent. The optimum mixing volume ratio of garbage to sawdust was 15:1 contrary to 20:1 in conventional one. Moreover, aerobic condition was maintained efficiently. Effects obtained by using a inner circulation system were as follows. It was possible to reduce the ammonia causing offensive odor and verified that consumption of electricity cut down to 1/3 with reduction of exhaust gas inflowing. According to this inner circulation, the optimum air flow was $0.44m^3$ to 100kg treatment capacity. The electricity consumption was changed in proportion to inflowing air volume.

  • The best way to treat livestock manure is to recycle as much as possible. The composting of livestock manure is a safe and economical treatment process. This study was carried out to investigate decomposition effect of pig manure by adding fermented compost. The fermented compost was added in pig manure mixed with sawdust as an inoculator, and the mixture was fed to composting reactor. Supplemental levels of fermented compost on the pig manure mixed with sawdust were regulated at 5, 10, 15 and 20% (V/V) respectively. The results were as follows ; 1. In all cases, PH range was between 7.6~9.05 during composting period. 2. The highest temperature and the long duration of thermophilic stage were observed in control treatment. 3. The number of microorganism reached at maximum on day 4, which recorded the highest temperature 4. Compost pile mixed with 10% of inoculator (fermented compost) showed the highest C/N ratio reduction.

  • In this study, the change of water content, pH, and combustion weight on the decomposition of poly ester vinyl and high density poly ethylene were examined. The poly ester vinyl was degraded by microorganism in food wastes for 30 days, while high density poly ethylene vinyl was not degraded. Also, the poly ester vinyl was rapidly degraded after the 10 days of operation and its weight was decreased. In the combustion reaction between $300^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, complete combustion was performed. Due to the degradation of poly ester vinyl by microorganism in food waste, the pH was increased from 4.26 to 7.6. During of 60 days operation, poly ester vinyl was degraded over 90%.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of microbial inoculation on sewage sludge composting. The number and species of microorganisms in sewage sludge sampled on February were higher than those sampled on August. The composting of sewage sludge is inhibited by the polyacrylamide cation, which was used as a coagulant and known to repress the growth of microorganisms. The growth of all microorganisms was inhibited by the addition of the polyacrylamide cation at a concentration of more than 0.8%. The species and viable counts of microorganisms were observed to increase during composting sewage sludge by inoculation of the effective microorganisms and addition of the pine tree sawdust as a bulking agent, compared with those without inoculation. A variety of organisms in compost(sewage sludge plus sawdust) were observed after composting for 30 days, such as Fragilaria sp., Proales sp., Vorticella sp., Schizothrix sp., Anabaena sp., Zoothaminium sp., Epstylis sp., Arcella sp., Balantidium sp., Actinophrys sp., Synedra sp., Euglypha sp., Ulothrix sp., Anacystis sp., and Clostium sp.

  • This study was performed to compare medium characteristics during the composting stage for medium turning performed using an excavator agitator and a prototype medium turner in button mushroom cultivation. The changes in temperature in the medium did not significantly differ between the treatments until the 3rd turn performed using the excavator agitator. However, during the 4th and 5th turns, the temperature increased during turning with the prototype medium turner. During outdoor composting, various types of microorganisms such as thermophilic bacteria (Bacillus spp.), Actinomycetes, fluorescent Pseudomonas spp., and filamentous fungi were found to be distributed in the medium. The counts of aerobic bacteria and fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. did not significantly differ between treatments, and the counts of thermophilic bacteria and thermophilic actinomycetes were slightly higher during turning with the prototype medium turner. The rice straw was slightly shorter and water content lower for the prototype medium turner. There was no significant difference between pH and EC treatments. The L, a, and b values tended to increase on turning with the prototype medium turner.
