  • This study was conducted to discuss the effects of hardener and extender contents on peak temperature, reaction enthalpy (${\Delta}H$), gelation time, viscosity change, and pH value in three types of UMF (urea-melamine- formaldehyde) resin with the help of perpHecT LogR meter, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and advanced rheometric expansion system (ARES), The results indicated that the pH value of Control A steeply decreased to 5,2 in the early stage but relatively remained constant thereafter as in Synthesis 1 and Synthesis 2, The peak temperature and time decreased as well, whereas ${\Delta}H$ and viscosity increased with the increase of hardener content. On the other hand, ${\Delta}H$ was not changed up to the extender content of 5% and then decreased with its further addition, And the pH value and peak temperature showed no change with the increase of extender content at the hardener content of 5% in three types of UMF resin, The effect of hardener content in this experiment, however, appeared more conspicuous in Control A than in the other two types of Synthesis 1 and Synthesis 2, These results might be caused by higher molecular weight with longer chains of methylene ($-CH_2-$) and methylene ($-CH_2-O-CH_2-$) ether bridges or much more branched chains in Control A.

  • In the present work, 6061 Al-$B_4C$ sintered composites containing different $B_4C$ contents were fabricated and their characteristic were investigated as a function of sintering temperature. For this, composite powders and their compacts with $B_4C$ various contents from 0 to 40 wt.% were fabricated using a planetary ball milling equipment and cold isostatic pressing, respectively, and then they were sintered in the temperature ranges of 580 to $660^{\circ}C$. Above sintering temperature of $640^{\circ}C$, real density was decreased due to the occurrence of sweat phenomena. In addition, it was realized that sinterability of 6061Al-$B_4C$ composite material was lowered with increasing $B_4C$ content, resulting in the decrease in its real density and at the same time in the increment of porosity.

  • An importance of infrastructures' protection against crash or blast loading has been an emerging issue as structures are becoming much bigger and population densities in downtown are growing up. However, there exists no such a standard to evaluate the protection performance of construction material itself. Prior to building standards for protection assessment techniques, this study performed gas-gun propelled projectile impact tests with series of contact-type monitoring systems to investigate the applicability of each sensing type. Through the impact tests, failure modes and protection performances of both normal concrete and UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) reinforced by steel fibers were also evaluated. The results showed that LVDT could be applicable for the impact test among contact-type sensors and UHPC with fibers had a remarkable potential to improve protection against impact loading.

  • Under impact or blast loads, concrete behaves with different mechanical properties comparing to the static loading conditions. In other words, with high strain rate, mechanical properties of concrete vary significantly. To evaluate the compressive characteristics of concrete with high strain rate, SHPB(Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar) test is typically used. However, because SHPB test method has been developed for metallic materials, it is necessary to verify the applicability of SHPB for brittle materials such as concrete. Also, there have been little researches on the evaluations of mechanical characteristics of UHPC under high strain rate conditions. This study has been performed to evaluate and analyse the compressive characteristics of plain concrete and UHPC with SHPB test apparatus. Also, to verify the applicability of SHPB test for concrete, direct displacement image analysis with high speed camera was performed for the comparisons with analytical solutions for SHPB test.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of thickness on the degree of cure of dual-cured composite core. 2, 4, 6, 8 mm thickness Luxacore Dual and Luxacore Self (DMG Inc, Hamburg, Germany) core composites were cured by bulk or incremental filling with halogen curing unit or self-cure mode The specimens were stored at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and the Knoop's hardness of top and bottom surfaces were measured. The statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and Tukey's test at p = 0.05 significance level. In self cure mode, polymerization is not affected by the thickness. In Luxacore dual, polymerization of the bottom surface was effective in 2, 4 and 6 (incremental) mm specimens. However the 6 (bulk) and 8 (bulk, incremental) mm filling groups showed lower bottom/top hardness ratio (p < 0.05). Within the limitation of this experiment, incremental filling is better than bulk filling in case of over 4 mm depth, and bulk filling should be avoided.

  • Material characteristics and the prediction of life time of polyacrylic rubber (ACM) for automotive engine gasket were studied. Two kinds of ACM rubber compounds, having chlorine cure-site and carboxyl cure-site, were made with optimum formulations and the properties of each materials were examined. As a test results for the thermal properties and compression set, which are very important in the application for the automotive engine gasket, the compound using ACM with carboxyl cure-site was evaluated as having a better characteristics than that of ACM with chlorine cure-site. Arrhenius relationship based on time-temperature superposition principle (TTSP) was obtained through the accelerated heat aging test to predict the useful life-time for the compound using ACM with carboxyl cure-site.

  • Rubber components have been widely used in automotive industry as anti-vibration components for many years. These subjected to fluctuating loads, often fail due to the nucleation and growth of defects or cracks. To prevent such failures, it is necessary to understand the fatigue failure mechanism for rubber materials and to evaluate the fatigue life for rubber components. The objective of this study is to develop the durability analysis process for vulcanized rubber components, which is applicable to predict fatigue life at initial product design step. The determination method of nonlinear material constants for FE analysis was proposed. In order to investigate the applicability of the commonly used damage parameters, fatigue tests and corresponding finite element analyses were carried out and strain energy density was proposed as the fatigue damage parameter for rubber components. The fatigue analysis for automotive rubber components was performed and the durability analysis process was reviewed.

  • Flip chip assembly on organic substrates using ACAs have received much attentions due to many advantages such as easier processing, good electrical performance, lower cost, and low temperature processing compatible with organic substrates. ACAs are generally composed of epoxy polymer resin and small amount of conductive fillers (less than 10 wt.%). As a result, ACAs have almost the same CTE values as an epoxy material itself which are higher than conventional underfill materials which contains lots of fillers. Therefore, it is necessary to lower the CTE value of ACAs to obtain more reliable flip chip assembly on organic substrates using ACAs. To modify the ACA composite materials with some amount of conductive fillers, non-conductive fillers were incorporated into ACAs. In this paper, we investigated the effect of fillers on the thermo-mechanical properties of modified ACA composite materials and the reliability of flip chip assembly on organic substrates using modified ACA composite materials. Contact resistance changes were measured during reliability tests such as thermal cycling, high humidity and temperature, and high temperature at dry condition. It was observed that reliability results were significantly affected by CTEs of ACA materials especially at the thermal cycling test. Results showed that flip chip assembly using modified ACA composites with lower CTEs and higher modulus by loading non-conducting fillers exhibited better contact resistance behavior than conventional ACAs without non-conducting fillers. Microwave model and high-frequency measurement of the ACF flip-chip interconnection was investigated using a microwave network analysis. ACF flip chip interconnection has only below 0.1nH, and very stable up to 13 GHz. Over the 13 GHz, there was significant loss because of epoxy capacitance of ACF. However, the addition of $SiO_2filler$ to the ACF lowered the dielectric constant of the ACF materials resulting in an increase of resonance frequency up to 15 GHz. Our results indicate that the electrical performance of ACF combined with electroless Wi/Au bump interconnection is comparable to that of solder joint.

  • According to the evaluation on GMT-sheet by molding conditions, fiber projection on the moldings surface was investigated. Fiber projection is one of the major defects on moldings surface due to matrix shrinkage. That is, fiber projection happens from different shrinkage of matrix and glass fiber. Height of fiber projection from moldings surface becomes smaller when molding pressure is higher during holding pressure and cooling process. Height of fiber projection is dominantly affected by molding pressure. With consideration of molding pressure, the formation of surface unevenness and change in fiber projection height was elucidated. In addition, coating layer is effective to suppress surface defects, and there is no fiber projection or crack in case that coating is applied. Coating layer improves surface roughness up to the level of the polypropylene which is a single material.

  • In this study, we analyzed process numerically when a bogie frame skin is manufactured by applying resin transfer molding process using composite material instead of steel. Processing time was compared based on the various thickness of bogie frame skin and the weight variation of a skin was also considered. As a result, RTM processing time decreases and the weight of a bogie reduces as the thickness of frame skin increases with the assumption that fiber volume is constant inside the skin. By considering these results as the information to estimate the production cost, trade-off between two fields, processing time and structural properties, can be performed in design optimization to produce bogie frame.
