  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the detection ability of secondary caries using qunatitative light-induce fluorescence-digital (QLF-D) device. Twenty bovine teeth with cavity on surface were demineralized during 21 days for secondary caries lesion of cavity wall. After 21 days, cavity was filled using composite resin and cut the specimen in half with disc. Fluorescence loss of lesion on surface by time flow, cross sectional lesion, and lesion of filled or unfilled surface were analyzed using analysis software. ${\Delta}F$ (value of fluorescence loss) of the lesion on surface assessed by the QLF-D increased significantly over time up to 21 days. And ${\Delta}F$ value of lesion of filled surface is significantly lower than that of unfilled surface (p<0.001). ${\Delta}F$ of filled surface is 1.31 times of cross section lesion. The correlation of between ${\Delta}F$ of filled surface lesion and ${\Delta}F$ of cross section lesion was showed low agreement (0.026) and correlation of between ${\Delta}F$ of unfilled surface lesion and ${\Delta}F$ of cross section lesion was showed high agreement (0.613). In conclusion, secondary caries can be detected on surface using QLF-D. However, interference of fluorescence of filling material is the points to be especially considered for exact analysis of secondary caries lesion.

  • To develop the health and functional food material from oats, this study was conducted to determine the biologiral activities(antibacterial, antioxidative and mtltmor effects) of oat bran's soluble ${\beta}$-glucans obtained from oat bran concentrate(OBC) by central composite experimental design. The antibacterial effect of oat's ${\beta}$-glucans in the concentration of 250, 500$\mu\textrm{g}$/disc was not detected by paper disc method, and no antioxidative effect of them in the concentration of 5% by electron donating ability. The growth inhibition on tumor cell lines of oat's soluble ${\beta}$ -glucans was significantly higher in the experimental fraction of No. 7(temperature 45$^{\circ}C$, ethanol 15%, pH 6) than the other fractions(p<0.05). The maximal values of growth inhibitions on AGS, Hep3B and A549 cell lines in the cancentration of 1mg/ml are 59%, 58% and 54% respectively. In addition, the inhibition effect on three tumor cell lines of No. 1(temperature 5$^{\circ}C$, ethanol 5%, pH 6) was relatively high. From the results of response surface methodology, as the values of independent variables changed, they influenced the growth inhibition effect on this cell lines. With this on work further research is required to clarify antitumor effects.

  • The objective of this study was to fabricate hydroxyapatite (HA) containing titania layer by HA blasting and anodization method to obtain advantages of both methods and evaluated biocompatibility. To fabricate the HA containing titania layer on titanium, HA blasting treatment was performed followed by microarc oxidation (MAO) using the electrolyte solution of 0.04 M ${\beta}$-glycerol phosphate disodium salt n-hydrate and 0.4 M calcium acetate n-hydrate on the condition of various applied voltages (100, 150, 200, 250 V) for 3 minutes. The experimental group was divided according to the surface treatment procedure: SM (simple machined polishing treatment), HA, MAO, HA+MAO 100, HA+MAO 150, HA+MAO 200, HA+MAO 250. The wettability of surface was observed by contact angle measurement. Biocompatibility was evaluated by cell adhesion, and cell differentiation including alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium concentration with MC3T3-E1 cells. The porous titanium oxide containing HA was formed at 150 and 200 V. These surfaces had a more hydrophilic characteristic. Biocompatibility was demonstrated that HA titania composite layer on titanium showed enhanced cell adhesion, and cell differentiation. Therefore, these results suggested that HA containing titania layer on titanium was improved biological properties that could be applied as material for dental implant system.

  • In this study, new composition of orange color pigment was developed by replacing formerly used lead and chromium with environment-friendly elements. $TiO_2-SnO-ZnO$ composite was synthesized using the solid state reaction under the reducing atmosphere with the LPG and air mixture gas. The synthesized pigments were characterized by spectrophotometer, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The colorimetric analysis of pigments exhibited color values ranging from yellow to orange-red. Five different crystalline phases were formed after the heat treatment for 4 and 6 hours. The color of pigments was strongly influenced by the crystalline structure of $SnO_2$, having either cubic or tetragonal structure. The oxidation state study of elements revealed that the color of pigment is getting close to rYR with the increase of $Sn^{4+}$ ratio.

  • The uniform nanofibers of poly(L-lactide-$co$-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PLCL) with different contents of marine collagen (MC) were successfully prepared by electrospinning method. The effects of the major parameters in electrospinning process such as tip to target distance (TTD), voltage, nozzle size and flow rate on the average diameter of the electrospun nanofiber were investigated in generating composite nanofiber. The diameter and morphology of the nanofibers were confirmed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, we measured a water contact angle to determine the surface wettability of the nanofibers. The average diameter of the nanofibers decreased as the value of TTD, MC contents, and voltages increased in comparison with that of pristine PLCL nanofiber. In contrast, the diameter of the nanofibers increased as the flow rate and inner diameter of nozzle increased in comparison with that of pristine PLCL. In addition, the hydrophilicity of the nanofiber and attachment of MG-63 cells on the sheets increased as incorporated collagen contents increased. Therefore, the marine collagen would be a potential material to enhance cellular interactivity of synthetic materials by mimicking the natural tissue.

  • Multi-functional urethane acrylate monomers as the curing agent of poly(phenylene ether) (PPE) were synthesized and then the urethane bond formation was checked by FTIR spectrometry and NMR analysis. The synthesized monomers were mixed with PPE and fabricated to dielectric substrates. After forming PPE/monomer composite sheets by a film coater, several sheets were laminated to a test substrate in a vacuum laminator and then its properties depending on the type and the amount of monomers, such as dielectric constant, dielectric loss, and peel strength, were measured. Between the two different hydroxyl acrylates, when the monomer synthesized with 2-hydroxy-3-phenoxypropyl acrylate containing a phenyl group was used as a curing agent, a smaller dielectric loss was obtained and the dielectric constant and loss decreased with a decrease in the amount of the monomer. The peel strength values of the test substrates, however, did not show any specific difference between the cases of two synthesized monomers. As a result, it was obtained the polymer substrate for high frequency application having peel strength of about 10 N, low dielectric constant of 2.54, and low dielectric loss of 0.0027 at 1 GHz.

  • Tribological behavior of plasma-sprayed $Cr_2O_3$-based coatings containing $MoO_3$ at 450$^{\circ}C$ was investigated to understand the influence of $MoO_3$. A reciprocal disc-on-plate type tribo-tester was employed to examine fricition and wear behavior of the specimens. The microstructure and phase composition of the coating was characterized with Transmission Electron Microscopy(TEM). The TEM analysis indicated that $MoO_3$ was dispersed into the grain boundary, resulting in the increase of the hardness and density of the coating. Worn surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and chemistry of the worn surfaces was analyzed using a X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer(XPS). The results showed that the friction coefficient of the $MoO_3$-added coatings was lower than that without $MoO_3$ addition. The larger protecting layers were observed at the worn surface of plasma spray coated specimens with $MoO_3$ composition in the protecting layer appears to be more favorable in reducing the friction.

  • Even though to discard the waste FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Plastic) is urgent and problematic, the way to do it has not been efficient. In our project team the FRP have been splitted into some layers which have different physical properties; mat and roving layers. Among those, the roving layer woven like a basket by bundles of glass fibers has been cut into reusable fibers called 'F-fiber'. F-fiber is 1 mm or 3 mm in width and 3 cm in length. It is used in fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) with 0.5%, 0.7%, 1.0%, or 1.5% of volume ratio. Produced FRC was tested in compressive, tensile, and bending stress in contrast to the without-fiber (standard) concrete and 0.1% polypropylene reinforced concrete (PP-FRC). The tensile and bending stresses are more or less those of PP-FRC. The compressive stress, however, is similar (with 3 mm F-fiber) to or lower (with 1 mm F-fiber) than that of standard concrete. Conclusively the usage of the waste FRC in concrete is advised to be limited to the one where the compressive stress is not much critical.

  • Nitinol, a shape memory alloy (SMA), is manufactured from titanium and nickel and it used in various fields such as electrical applications, micro sensors. It is also recommended as a material in medical for implant because it has excellent organic compatibility. Nitinol is intended to be inserted into the human body, products require a high-quality surface and low residual stress. To overcome this problems, explore electrolyte polishing (EP) is being explored that may be appropriate for use with nitinol. EP is a particularly useful machining method because, as a non contact machining method, it produces neither machining heat nor internal stress in the machined materials. Sandpaper polishing is also useful machining method because, as a contact machining method, it can easily good surface roughness in the machined materials. The electrolyte polishing (EP) process has an effect of improving the surface roughness as well as the film polishing process, but has a characteristic that the residual stress is hardly generated because the work hardened layer is not formed on the processed surface. The sandpaper polishing process has the effect of improving the surface roughness but the residual stress remains in the surface. We experimented with three conditions of polishing process. First condition is the conventional polishing. Second condition is the electrochemical polishing(EP). And Last condition is a mixing process with the conventional polishing and the EP. Surface roughness and residual stress of the nitinol before a polishing process were $0.474{\mu}mRa$, -45.38MPa. Surface roughness and residual stress of the nitinol after mixing process of the conventional polishing and the EP were $1.071{\mu}mRa$, -143.157MPa. Surface roughness and residual stress of the nitinol after conventional polishing were $0.385{\mu}mRa$ and -205.15MPa. Surface roughness and residual stress of sandpaper and EP nitinol were $1.071{\mu}mRa$, -143.157MPa. The result shows that the EP process is a residual stress free process that eliminates the residual stress on the surface while eliminating the deformed layer remaining on the surface through composite surface machining rather than single surface machining. The EP process can be used for biomaterials such as nitinol and be applied to polishing of wafers and various fields.

  • The effect of moistening and air-drying of acid-conditioned dentin before priming on the formation of resin-dentin hybrid zone was investigated, Freshly extracted human molars were used and divided at random into 5 groups, Groups 1 - 3 consisted of specimens conditioned with 10 % phosphoric acid for 20 seconds; Group 1 served as a control in which the conditioned dentin was simply blot-dried with a damp facial tissue; Group 2 was air dried for 30 seconds ; Group 3 was air dried for 30 seconds and immediately remoistened for 10 seconds with air-water syringe. and then the specimen was blot-dried with a damp facial tissue. Groups 4-5 were not acid conditioned ; In group 4, the smear layer on the dentin was blot dried before primer placement; Group 5 was air dried only for 30 seconds, The acetone-based primer and bonding agent of All Bond 2 (Bisco. Inc., USA) and composite resin (Z-100, 3M Dental products, USA) were applied for acid conditioned dentin and non-conditioned dentin. The morphologic ultrastructure of resin-dentin hybrid zone was examined by the use of SEM and TEM. and the existence of inorganic material and analysis of Ca/P weight-percent ratio in the resin-dentin hybrid zone were revealed by the EDAX, The results were as follows : 1. In the moistened specimens from acid-conditioned groups, the resin penetrated about 3-$4{\mu}m$ into dentin and the denatured collagen smear layer was not present at the surface. The resin tag was formed to a thickeness of 3-$4{\mu}m$ at the upper part of dentinal tubule and compactively connected to each other by means of many lateral branching. 2. In the air-dried specimens from acid-conditioned groups, the resin penetrated about 2.0-$2.5\;{\mu}m$ into dentin and an upper thin black layer to a thickness of 30-35nm was identified between adhesive resin and demineralized collagen layer. The resin tag to have a diameter of $2.5{\mu}m$ was formed at the upper part of dentinal tubule. However the funnel shape of the tag was not notable compared to the moistened specimens. 3. In the remoistened specimens from acid conditioned groups, the resin penetrated about 2.0-$2.5{\mu}m$ into dentin and an upper black layer was not present. The resin tag at the upper part of dentinal tubule was formed less than $2{\mu}m$ and was weakly connected to each other by means of few lateral branching. 4. In the non-conditioned groups, the smear layer was formed to a thickness of $0.5{\mu}m$ at dentin surface. However, the resin-dentin hybrid zone was not identified by TEM. The evidence of resin penetration into intertubular and intratubular dentin did not show. 5. All the acid-conditioned groups showed that the detected calcium and phosphorus weight percent ratios at the $2{\mu}m$ upper portion from the resin-dentin interface into the resin were much higher than that at the $2{\mu}m$ lower portion from the resin-dentin interface to dentin. (P<0.01).
