  • The field of neural networks has been a recent surge in activity as a result of progress in developments of efficient training algorithms. For this reason, and coupled with the widespread availability of powerful personal computer hardware for running simulations of networks, there is increasing focus on the potential benefits this field can offer. The neural network may be viewed as an advanced pattern recognition technique and can be applied in many areas such as financial time series forecasting, medical diagnostic expert system and etc.. The intention of this study is to build and implement one simple artificial neural networks hereinafter called ANN. For this purpose, some literature survey was undertaken to understand the structures and algorithms of ANN theoretically. Based on the review of theories about ANN, the system adopted 3-layer back propagation algorithms as its learning algorithm to simulate one case of medical diagnostic model. The adopted ANN algorithm was performed in PC by using turbo PASCAL and many input parameters such as the numbers of layers, the numbers of nodes, the number of cycles for learning, learning rate and momentum term. The system output more or less successful results which nearly agree with goals we assumed. However, the system has some limitations such as the simplicity of the programming structure and the range of parameters it can dealing with. But, this study is useful for understanding general algorithms and applications of ANN system and can be expanded for further refinement for more complex ANN algorithms.

  • Identifying the boundary of the effective receiving power of waves is one of the most important factors for cell optimization. In this paper, we introduce a propagation loss prediction model which yields highly accurate prediction in very complex areas as Seoul where a mixture of many large buildings, small buildings, broad streets, narrow alleys, rivers and forests co-exist in an irregular arrangement. This prediction model is based on neural networks trained on field measurement data collected in the past. Using these data along with 3-D digital elevation maps and vector data for building structures, we extract the parameter values which mainly affect the amount of propagation loss. These parameter values are then used as the inputs to the neural network. Trained neural network becomes the approximated function of the propagation loss model which generalizes very well and can predict accurately in the regions not included in training the neural network. The experimental results show a superior performance over the other models in the cells operating in the city of Seoul.

  • Since warfare surroundings getting complex and diverse in the future, it is not simple to make appropriate structures and organizations for military groups along the phenomenon. Therefore, this study proposes a methodology of verification for army staff's structure and organization by units in the future using System Dynamics(SD). The procedure of using SD for the verification is a calculation of database(DB), the design of causal loop diagram, and the simulation and analysis. First, DB such as individuals' workload and time is calculated through observation after a real group of staff. Second, the causal loop diagram is considered by a flow of task, and it is modeled. Third, the DB is entered into the model and simulated for analyzing of appropriacy. This study used Powersim program for designing the SD model. One of the weaknesses of the methodology of this study is possibilities of a different result by the DB by observers and perspectives by analysts. As supplementation for the weakness, this study includes research analysis and surveys for the total analysis. The meaning of this study is that it suggests a methodology of warfighting experimentation to analyze structure and organization of military groups with quantifying suitability in the scientific method.

  • As sequencing technologies are steadily improving, massive sequence data have been accumulated in public databases. Thereby, programs based on various algorithms are developed to mine useful information, such as genes, operons and regulatory factors, from these sequences. However, despite its usefulness in a wide range of applications, comprehensive analyses of metagenome using these programs have some drawbacks, thereby yielding inaccurate or complex results. We here provide a possibility of signature sequences (cis-acting transcriptional and translational factors of metagenome) as a hallmark of ORFs finding from metagenome.

  • It is well known that Kalman filtering is an optimal real-time data fusion method for GPS/INS integration. However, it has some limitations in terms of stability, adaptability and observability. A Kalman filter can perform optimally only when its dynamic model is correctly defined and the noise statistics for the measurement and process are completely known. It is found that estimated Kalman filter states could be influenced by several factors, including vehicle dynamic variations, filter tuning results, and environment changes, etc., which are difficult to model. Neural networks can map input-output relationships without apriori knowledge about them; hence a proper designed neural network is capable of learning and extracting these complex relationships with enough training. This paper presents a GPS/INS integrated system that combines Kalman filtering and neural network algorithms to improve navigation solutions during GPS outages. An Extended Kalman filter estimates INS measurement errors, plus position, velocity and attitude errors etc. Kalman filter states, and gives precise navigation solutions while GPS signals are available. At the same time, a multi-layer neural network is trained to map the vehicle dynamics with corresponding Kalman filter states, at the same rate of measurement update. After the output of the neural network meets a similarity threshold, it can be used to correct INS measurements when no GPS measurements are available. Selecting suitable inputs and outputs of the neural network is critical for this hybrid method. Detailed analysis unveils that some Kalman filter states are highly correlated with vehicle dynamic variations. The filter states that heavily impact system navigation solutions are selected as the neural network outputs. The principle of this hybrid method and the neural network design are presented. Field test data are processed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.

  • Safety at sea continues to be an important topic for research. The factors that contribute to safety issues are often complex and unclear. Lack of non-technical skills in such areas as communication, teamworking, situational awareness, decision making etc. are well documented as directly affecting safety in high risk work settings such as on board merchant vessels. Competence in non-technical skills can be affected by various habits and circumstances that influence a worker and result in either positive thinking and behaviour or negative thinking and behaviour. Negative thinking can cause stress, anger, frustration; loneliness etc. and this can possibly result in behaviour or actions that undermine the safety of crew and ship. Factors that may contribute to these negative thoughts and behaviours are many and varied and this paper will be looking at one aspect: mobile phone use. In the Republic of Korea, dependency on mobile phones is uniquely high. Maritime students are also susceptible to such dependency and this paper will demonstrate that the symptoms associated with mobile phone addiction and dependency, and in particular the symptoms of withdrawal, are important factors that need to be mitigated in order to improve safety at sea. Although the benefits of mobile phones are many it will be suggested that over-reliance, dependency or addiction can result in negative thinking or behaviour that may directly or indirectly contribute to the factors that cause incidents and accidents at sea. It will be suggested that the most appropriate method of dealing with this problem is twofold: firstly, through training at the educational level and secondly, by encouraging the shipping industry and government to invest more into providing seafarers with better access to the communication methods that they are used to on shore in order to improve work conditions.

  • This study examined the perception and readiness of nursing educators regarding interprofessional education (IPE), and discussed the validity and application of IPE in nursing. From December 2016 to January 2017, 239 nursing professors and nurses completed a structured questionnaire consisting of general characteristics, the Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale, the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Survey (RIPLS), and an IPE action plan. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test using the IBM SPSS ver. 23.0 program (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The analysis revealed that 91.6% of the participants had not experienced IPE, and only 11.7% knew about IPE. However, approximately 80.0% answered that IPE is necessary. The results of this study showed that the score of the perceived need for cooperation was higher in nurses than it was in professors, while the score on competency and autonomy was higher in professors than it was in nurses. With reference to the scores on the RIPLS, those of professors were high on the sub-scales of teamwork and collaboration, professional identity, and roles and responsibility. The results revealed that participants considered the upper-grade undergraduate years as the ideal time for imparting IPE, and it was deemed suitable to include communication, simulation, and clinical practice in IPE. Doctors, pharmacists, and physiotherapists were thought to require cooperation for IPE the most. Despite the presence of several barriers to IPE, the participants thought that IPE can achieve learning outcomes such as interprofessional communication and cooperation, conflict resolution, and teamwork. It is necessary to cooperate with professionals in the complex clinical environment as professional areas are specialized and subdivided. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the application of IPE in undergraduate education and in on-the-job training.
