  • Unlike robotic systems, humans excel at a variety of tasks by utilizing their intrinsic impedance, force sensation, and tactile contact clues. By examining human strategy in arm impedance control, we may be able to teach robotic manipulators human''s superior motor skills in contact tasks. This paper develops a novel method for estimating and predicting the human joint impedance using the electromyogram(EMG) signals and limb position measurements. The EMG signal is the summation of MUAPs (motor unit action potentials). Determination of the relationship between the EMG signals and joint stiffness is difficult, due to irregularities and uncertainties of the EMG signals. In this research, an artificial neural network(ANN) model was developed to model the relation between the EMG and joint stiffness. The proposed method estimates and predicts the multi joint stiffness without complex calculation and specialized apparatus. The feasibility of the developed model was confirmed by experiments and simulations.

  • A two-degree-of-freedom out-of-plane model with contact stiffness is presented to describe dynamical interaction between the pad and disc of a disc brake system. It is assumed that the out-of-plane motion of the system depends on the friction force acting along the in-plane direction. Dynamic friction coefficient is modelled as a function of both in-plane relative velocity and out-of-plane normal force. When the friction coefficient depends only on the relative velocity, the contact stiffness has the role of negative stiffness. The results of stability analysis show that the stiffness of both pad and disc is equally important. Complex eigen value analysis is conducted for the case that the friction coefficient is also dependent on the normal force. The results further verify the importance of the stiffness. It has also been found that increasing the gradient of friction coefficient with respect to the normal force makes the system more unstable.

  • This paper presents the analytical stiffness analysis method for a low-DOF planar parallel manipulator. An n-DOF (n<3) planar parallel manipulator to which 1- or 2-DOF serial mechanism is connected in series may be used as a positioning device in planar tasks requring high payload and high speed. Differently from a 3-DOF planar parallel manipulator, an n-DOF planar parallel counterpart may be subject to constraint forces as well as actuation forces. Using the theory of reciprocal screws, the planar stiffness is modeled such that the moving platform is supported by three springs related to the reciprocal screws of actuations (n) and constraints (3-n). Then, the spring constants can be precisely determined by modeling the compliances of joints and links in serial chains. Finally, the stiffness of two kinds of 2-DOF planar parallel manipulators with simple and complex springs is analyzed. In order to show the effectiveness of the suggested method, the results of analytical stiffness analysis are compared to those of numerical stiffness analysis by using ADAMS.

  • In this study, the stiffness and damping coefficients of herringbone grooved air journal bearings are studied. A generalized coordinate transformation method to handle the complex geometry of incompressible fluid bearing is modified for compressible fluid. The modified equations are discretized by the base of finite difference method. A new computer program using Visual C++ language is developed. The load carrying capacity and stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated according to the design parameters like groove depth or the number of grooves and compared to that of plain air journal bearings.

  • Eigensolutions associated with self-excited vibration of disc brake system can be obtained by complex eigenvalue analysis. The eigenvalue sensitivity to change in contact stiffness can be used to demonstrate stability criteria and eigenvalue veering. Dynamic instability on eigenvalue loci with respect to the variation of contact stiffness is found to be related to mode interaction between two adjacent modes. This modal interaction can be effectively shown by mode shape visualization. This paper presents the methodology to construct the mode shape of disc brake system where a disc and two brake pads are coupled with contact stiffness.

  • Derivation procedures of exact dynamic stiffness matrices of thin-walled curved beams subjected to axial forces are rigorously presented for the spatial free vibration analysis. An exact dynamic stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform curved beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. Firstly this numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Thus, displacement functions of dispalcement parameters are exactly derived and finally exact stiffness matrices are determined using element force-displacement relationships. The natural frequencies of the nonsymmetric thin-walled curved beam are evaluated and compared with analytical solutions or results by ABAQUS's shell elements in order to demonstrate the validity of this study.

  • In order to perform the spatial buckling analysis of the curved beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section, exact static stiffness matrices are evaluated using equilibrium equations and force-deformation relations. Contrary to evaluation procedures of dynamic stiffness matrices, 14 displacement parameters are introduced when transforming the four order simultaneous differential equations to the first order differential equations and 2 displacement parameters among these displacements are integrated in advance. Thus non-homogeneous simultaneous differential equations are obtained with respect to the remaining 8 displacement parameters. For general solution of these equations, the method of undetermined parameters is applied and a generalized linear eigenvalue problem and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices are solved with respect to 12 displacement parameters. Resultantly displacement functions are exactly derived and exact static stiffness matrices are determined using member force-displacement relations. The buckling loads are evaluated and compared with analytic solutions or results by ABAQUS's shell element.
