Residents serve as educators who teach patients, medical students, fellow residents, and other medical personnel while being trained as learners. The purpose of this study was to review the literature on the competencies, perceptions, and educational status of residents as teachers, and to suggest appropriate competencies and curricular components. A literature review was conducted and resident-related institutional homepages were searched. Many countries are developing the educational competencies of residents as teachers and implementing educational programs. Residents most often taught clinical knowledge and clinical skills to patients, medical students, fellow residents, and other medical professionals, and recognized the importance of education, the joy of teaching, and the role of teachers; however, the task of teaching was burdensome. Based on these findings, competencies and educational programs for the resident as teacher are proposed. The competencies consist of the five stages of ACCESS (active learner, clinical teacher, curriculum developer, educational scholar, social communicator, supervisor/leader), and specific teaching content, methods, and assessment methods are suggested to develop these competencies. Educating residents to develop their competencies as teachers is very important as a way to foster lifelong learning skills, help others, and assist in leadership roles.
The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' competencies of creativity thinking, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and digital competence by implementing science fiction STEAM program. Based on the story of 'Fritz Haber' and the 'Garden of Dawn', a STEAM program was developed according to the ADDIE model. In the analysis stage, the purpose of the teaching-learning program using novels was set, and learners and learning environments were analyzed. At the design stage, the novels 'Fritz Harbor' and 'Garden of Dawn' were selected, learning goals were set according to the achievement standards of the curriculum, and learning contents and learning activities were sequenced and designed. In the development stage, teaching and learning materials were developed in a module format, implemented to classes, and evaluated. Pre-test and post-tests were conducted to identify the five major competencies such as creativity thinking, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, digital competence. The collected data was verified by paired t-test using SPSS. The results of the study showed statistically significant results in creative thinking, critical thinking, and digital competency.
This study researched the trends of mathematics education in Korean mathematics class in the aspects of teaching and learning method, assessment and teachers' competency based on TIMSS 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. Purpose: Maternal Fetal Intensive Care Unit (MFICU), which provides intensive care to high-risk mothers with increasing maternal age and high-risk newborns, has become a new field of nursing work in South Korea. The present study was conducted to identify the educational needs and self-assessing clinical competence of nurses in MFICU. Methods: The education needs and competencies of MFICU nurses were measured through prepared questionnaires by researchers based on the previous studies on job analysis of nurses in MFICU. Data were collected from January 2019 to March 2019. The study involved 168 nurses working in MFICUs at 12 hospitals nationwide as study subjects. The data were analyzed using the SPSS WIN 23.0 program. Results: The education needs of nurses in MFICU had an average of 4.21 points (${\pm}0.50$) and their nursing competence was average 3.38 points (${\pm}0.60$). The items reported as high education needs but low competency by nurses in MFICU were as following: 'postpartum hemorrhage and shock,' 'cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for neonate,' 'CPR during pregnancy,' 'disseminated intravascular coagulation,' 'sepsis,' and 'mechanical ventilation during pregnancy.' Conclusion: Based on these results, it is proposed that a comprehensive education program for nurses in MFICU should be developed by considering low capabilities among MFICU nurses as a priority factor.
Background: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of role-play in dental hygiene education by analyzing learners' perceptions and experiences of role-play classes. Methods: Role-play was used as a teaching method to run dental medical communication and practice classes for 31 3rd graders in the Department of Dental Hygiene to investigate the learner's perception of role-play classes, effectiveness of the classes, and learner's perception of the experience. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyze the differences in learners' perceptions of the role-play classes according to the main characteristics related to dental health communication education. Results: The correlation coefficient between awareness of dental communication education (4.74 ± 0.35) and awareness of role-play classes (4.44 ± 0.48) was an Rs of 0.634, showing a significant positive correlation (p<0.001). Conclusion: Learners recognized that dental hygiene communication competency is important for dental hygienists. In addition, a strategic teaching design is necessary to reduce the learner's burden on role-play considering the learner's experience, which is perceived as a disadvantage of role-play

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of simulation education using standardized patients on respiratory infectious disease knowledge and clinical performance of nursing students. A single-group before-and-after design for the nursing of infectious respiratory patients using standardized patients from March 2 to June 15, 2020, targeting 112 senior nursing students. Respiratory infectious disease education program 'knowledge of lung infectious diseases', 'hand washing', 'wearing a mask', 'encouraging patients and caregivers to wear masks', 'intravenous injection', '3-way injection', 'surgical aseptic technique', 'disinfecting medical devices' , 'contaminated linen management', 'infected person management manual', etc., and 10 educational tasks were performed, and consisted of lectures, technical training, simulation using standardized patients, and debriefing. After simulation education using standardized patients, students' knowledge and clinical performance skills on respiratory infectious diseases showed significant improvement, and it was expected that it could be used for various infection control practices.
The purpose of this study is to develop middle school English classes using Problem-Based Learning(PBL) based on flipped learning and to examine its effects. Recently, various attempts to combine flipped learning and PBL have been made; however, many studies have not been applied to middle and high school curriculums yet. The attempt of this study is expected to have theoretical and practical significance. The instructional model was derived from the review of previous studies, and the development of instructional program followed the general design procedure(analysis-design-development-implement-evaluation), and its validity was secured with the advice of related experts. To verify the effectiveness of the program, the English academic achievement test and the English key competency test were conducted before and after the program. Changes in English academic achievement were analyzed by the paired-sample t-test, and the effect of key competency and the level of achievement test performance (high vs, low) on the pre-post score change was analyzed by the mixed effects repeated measures ANOVA. As a result of the analysis, both academic achievement and key competencies increased, and the low-level students in the pre-academic achievement test showed more improvements. In conclusion, the PBL class based on flipped learning is effective in improving the English academic achievement and key competencies of middle school students, and in particular, it is shown to be an effective teaching method for students with low academic achievement.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the awareness of daycare teachers by the nursery school operation performance of the National Competency Standards(NCS). For this purpose, 35 public and private daycare center, home daycare centers and corporation daycare center teachers were randomly sampled in Busan Metropolitan City. We conducted a questionnaire consisting of 230 sub-elements based on 45 sub-competency unit elements extracted from 12 areas of job ability of the national competence standards. Final questionnaires were collected from 117 questionnaires of 28 national daycare teachers, 30 private daycare teachers, 30 home daycare teachers, and 29 corporation daycare teachers. As a result, there was a difference in the awareness of importance among the four groups in all 12 performance capability units. For the 12 job performance units, the importance was recognized in the order of corporate daycare center, national daycare center, home daycare center, and private daycare center. Among them, "Establishment of Child Care Center Management Policy", "Construction of Child Care Service", "Child Care Activity Management", "Infant and Child Playing Guide", "Body and Art Activity Guidance", "Language, Nutritional guidance" there were no differences in the awareness of the importance of corporate daycare teachers and national daycare teachers, and there was no difference between national daycare teachers and home daycare teachers. However, there was a difference between corporate daycare teachers and home daycare teachers.. There is also a difference in the awareness of importance between home daycare teachers and private daycare teachers. In the remaining five job competence units, "Child Care Assessment", "Support for Infant and Toddler Development", "Cooperation with the Home and Community", "Child Care Management", and "Child Care Research", corporation daycare centers, national daycare centers. There was no statistically significant difference in the awareness of importance, but there was a significant difference from the private daycare teachers. Also this tendency was consistently observed in 45 sub-capacity unit elements.
Objectives: Bioterrorism (BT) preparedness and response plans are particularly important among healthcare workers who will be among the first involved in the outbreak situations. This study was conducted to evaluate the current status of education for BT preparedness and response in health care-related colleges/junior colleges and to develop learning objectives for use in their regular curricula. Methods: We surveyed all medical colleges/schools, colleges/junior colleges that train nurses, emergency medical technicians or clinical pathologists, and 10% (randomly selected) of them that train general hygienists in Korea. The survey was conducted via mail from March to July of 2007. We surveyed 35 experts to determine if there was a consensus of learning objectives among healthcare workers. Results: Only 31.3% of medical colleges/schools and 13.3% of nursing colleges/junior colleges had education programs that included BT preparedness and responses in their curricula. The most common reason given for the lack of BT educational programs was 'There is not much need for education regarding BT preparedness and response in Korea'. None of the colleges/junior colleges that train clinical pathologists, or general hygienists had an education program for BT response. After evaluating the expert opinions, we developed individual learning objectives designed specifically for educational institutions. Conclusions: There were only a few colleges/junior colleges that enforce the requirement to provide education for BT preparedness and response in curricula. It is necessary to raise the perception of BT preparedness and response to induce the schools to provide such programs.
