  • The purpose of this study is developed the Item Feature Analysis (IFA) frameworks for curriculum-based assessments, focusing on Math competency and representation in secondary schools and implemented the IFA in National Assessment of Educational Achievement. To conduct the study, previous studies were analyzed, and feasibility studies were conducted twice. As a result of the study, we structured the IFA framework based on the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum in Korea and developed a method to analyze the characteristics of the math items. The results of structuring the framework for math included two categories: math competency in the content aspects, and representation type in the formal aspects. Specifically, 12 features of math competency and 8 features of representation type were identified, and an item feature analysis framework composed of these features was developed. The math competency was developed based on the subject competency of 2015 national curriculum. Math assessments in high schools, which have been changed to the competency-based assessments, had more frequency of the feature of math competency compared to middle schools. In this study, implemented the IFA in National Assessment of Educational Achievement and explored the way of ensuring the validity. These have been proved as critical applications for ensuring the validity of curriculum-based student assessment as well as building a tool for assessment.

  • This paper introduces the association method for the program outcomes of engineering education accreditation and the competency units of National Competency Standards(NCS). This association method can be used to efficiently develop an engineering curriculum that is based on both of the NCS and the engineering education accreditation. The association method consists of an analysis phase, an association phase and a checking phase. We also deals with the curriculum development procedure that uses the proposed association of program outcomes and competency units. Also, we provide the application of this method to the computer engineering program for NCS-based engineering education accreditation. Thus we can systematically and efficiently develop curriculums for the NCS-based engineering education accreditation by using the proposed method.

  • Recently, there has been active reformation of higher education. This trend has resulted in competency-based education (CBE) in many universities around the world, and dentistry education is no exception. However, it is necessary to keep in mind that CBE is both attractive and has its limitations. In particular, higher education is facing the obstacle of preparing students to survive in a supercomplex world in which nothing can be taken for granted. In addition, the frame of understanding and action lacks stability. In these circumstances, competency-based dentistry curriculum (CBDC) needs to be reestablished to deal with the changes and challenges of a supercomplex world. The purpose of this study is to explore alternatives to current CBDC practices, specifically based on an 'ontological approach.' To achieve this purpose, the importance of the ontological approach in the development of higher education curriculum in the future was examined. Then, the actual status and characteristics of CBDC in the present situation were investigated. Lastly, the development of CBCD based on an ontological approach in dentistry education was suggested.

  • As we have become more interested in 'competency' that means ability to do something around the world, the competency of the best performers has also been introduced in the university curriculum as a concept of core competency. Research continues on why this competency-based education is needed compared to existing academic-oriented education, how it can be introduced into existing curricula, and how it can be developed and evaluated in detail. This study develops and validates core competency assessment tools that can diagnose core competencies of engineering students. Therefore, this research paper conducted a literature review related to core competencies and also core competency assessment tools of university students. It seeks to explore the implications of core competency assessment tools for engineering students and then lay the foundation for competency-based teaching and learning at engineering colleges. And also it defines the concepts of core competencies and each core competency of engineering students through prior research analysis of competence, core competence, and core competence of university students. The primary core competency assessment tool consisted of sub-factors and questions of core competencies. It were modified through the expert validation of the primary one and then it was used as a core competency assessment tools for preliminary investigation. The core competency assessment tools for engineering students are consisted of 6 competencies, 22 sub-factors, and 91 questions. There are core competencies as follows: engineering basic competencies, major engineering competencies, self-management competencies, communication competencies, interpersonal competencies, global competencies. The preliminary survey was conducted on 426 engineering students attending the Engineering Education FESTA 2019. The preliminary findings were derived by conducting exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, question characteristics analysis, and reliability analysis for validation. The core competency assessment tools developed through this study can be used to verify the effectiveness of the curriculum and programs for students at engineering colleges. In addition, the developed core competencies, sub-factors, and questions can be utilized in a series of courses that design, conduct, and evaluate engineering curricula and programs as competency-based curriculum. The significance of this study is to lay the groundwork for providing competency-based education engineering students to develop core competencies.

  • The purpose of this study is modeling nursing competencies and reasoning out the core competencies, the ability for 20% of important actions for nursing jobs which can manage the rest 80% so that the competency-based nursing curriculum can be developed. A literature review of the vast studies regarding competencies was done to understand the concepts of competency-based curriculum, competency, and nursing competencies, identifying the relationships among each nursing competency categorized in accordance with those concepts. An exemplified concept map of core competencies for the competency-based nursing curriculum is suggested based on a thorough review of various competency modeling methodologies. The core competencies consist of base competency (theoretical/practical nursing knowledge and skills), practical competency (clinical judgment, patient education, communication, etc.), and personality competency (leadership, sense of responsibility, cooperation, etc.). The circular relationship among them can remain consistent through self-directed learning and critical thinking. Therefore, a nurse who have those core competencies is a knowledge worker, a self-directed learner, and also an effective, professional communicator. Further studies which solidify the concept of nursing competencies should be done, as well as the feedback procedures which evaluate the program outcomes and then reflect the evaluation results in the curriculum should be followed continuously.

  • Purpose: This study was to scrutinize not merely the nomenclature of clinical competency suggested in nursing literature but also what core clinical competency nursing students should be focused on for improving competency-based curriculum. Methods: A comprehensive review on 69 domestic and 89 foreign related literature was conducted. After reviewing the full text of a total of 158 articles, only 23 articles with measurement tools were selected for scrutinizing while 135 articles with obscure definitions of clinical competency were excluded. Results: Clinical competencies including 120 concepts were identified. Those concepts were categorized as 30 clinical competencies according to their similarities. Seven core clinical competencies including 1)nursing knowledge, 2)nursing skill, 3)interpersonal skill/cooperation, 4)problem-solving, 5)professionalism, 6)nursing management/leadership and 7)research ability were derived from the 30 clinical competencies through the categorizing process. Conclusion: Teaching & learning strategies should focus on the integration of nursing theories and clinical practices based on competency-based curriculum considering the 7 core clinical competencies. Nonetheless, they include somewhat abstract concepts and some were not concrete enough to be applied to the nursing curriculum. Thus, further research is needed in order to develop consensus-driven clinical competencies and competency modeling which can suggest the interrelation between the core competencies.

  • An outcome-based curriculum is perceived to be one alternative educational approach in medical education. Nonetheless, it is difficult for curriculum developers to convert from traditional curriculum to an outcome-based curriculum because research documenting its development process is rare. Therefore, this study aims to introduce the development process and method of outcome-based curriculum. For the purpose of this study, we used diverse data analyses, such as an existing literature search, development model analysis, and case analysis. We identified five phases from the analysis. First, the curriculum developers analyze the physician's job or a high performer in a medical situation. Second, curriculum developers extract outcomes and competencies through developing a curriculum, affinity diagraming, and critical incident interviews. Third, curriculum developers determine the proficiency levels of each outcome and competency evaluation methods. Fourth, curriculum developers conduct curriculum mapping with outcomes and competencies. Fifth, curriculum developers develop an educational system. Also, it is important to develop an assessment system for the curriculum implementation in the process of developing the outcome-based curriculum. An outcome-based curriculum influences all the people concerned with education in a medical school including the professors, students, and administrative staff members. Therefore, curriculum developers should consider not only performance assessment tools for the students but also assessment indicators for checking curriculum implementation and managing curriculum quality.
