Experimental Study on the Combustion Chracteristics in the Moxa Bucket Moxibustion (온통구(溫筒灸)의 연소특성(燃燒特性)에 관한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究))

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism and effect of moxa bucket moxibustion. Objectively, to be used as the quantitative data through the measurement of temperature, and to grasp the thermodynamic characteristics of moxa bucket moxibustion. Methods: We have selected of the moxa bucket moxibustion. We make a comparative study of the thermodynamic characteristics of moxa bucket moxibustion. We examined combustion times, temperatures, temperature gradients in each period during a combustion of moxa bucket moxibustion made by oak wood. Results: 1. We can design the moxa bucket moxibustion that it has 57.6$^{\circ}C$ maximum temperature with 7g weight and 10mm height, if we use more weight of moxa or lower the height of moxa, we can observe relatively elavated maximum temperature. We observe the maximum temperature following the measuring position of moxa bucket and we can see higher temperature at the center of the moxa bucket and lower temperature at the side of the moxa bucket. 2. We can design the moxa bucket moxibustion with 5g moxa and 10mm height that it has 0.121 $^{\circ}C$/sec of maximum temperature gradient, and it has relatively high temperature gradient at lower weight and height condition. 3. We can design the moxa bucket moxibustion with 7g moxa and 15mm height that it has 4,135sec of the longest effective temperature combustion time, if we use more weight of moxa or higher height of moxa, we can observe relatively extended effective temperature combustion time. We observe the longest effective combustion time following the measuring position of moxa bucket. We can see higher temperature at the center of the moxa bucket and lower temperature at the side of the moxa bucket.

  • The recent fire incident in an elementary school of Chonan city causes the media focus on the fire safety of residential container buildings. In this study, real fire tests were conducted in this kind of buildings. Combustion products including $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO, $NO_x,$, $SO_x$, HCI, HCN were measured, in order to investigate the hazard-reduction effects of employing gas mask protected with filter during the fire emergency of residential container buildings. According to the test results, whether or not employing the filter showed a sheer difference in the toxicity of the fire-induced gases, and then the importance of wearing a gas mask was evidently demonstrated.

  • A two-stroke Schnurle-type gasoline engine was modified to enable compression-ignition in both the port fuel injection and the in-cylinder direct injection. Using the engine, examinations of compression-ignition operation and engine performance tests were carried out. The amount of the residual gas and the in-cylinder mixture conditions were controlled by varying the valve angle rate of the exhaust valve (VAR) and the injection timing for direct injection conditions. It was found that the direct injection system is superior to the port injection system in terms of exhaust gas emissions and thermal efficiency, and that almost the same operational region of compression-ignition at medium speeds and loads was attained. Some interesting combustion characteristics, such as a shorter combustion period in higher engine speed conditions, and factors for the onset of compression-ignition were also examined.

  • The objective of this work is to investigate the effect of swirl, injection pressure and pilot injection on D.I. diesel combustion by using a transparent engine system. The test engine is equipped with common rail injection system to obtain high pressure and to control injection timing and duration. In this study, the combustion analysis and steady flow test were conducted to estimate the heat release rate from in-cylinder pressure. Soot distribution in diffusion flame according to swirl ratio, injection pressure and pilot injection was investigated by using LII technique. As the results, high injection pressure was found to shorten ignition delay as well as enhance peak pressure and heat release rate was greatly affected by injection timing and pilot injection. In addition, the results showed that the period of soot formation corresponded to the diffusion flame.

  • The objective of this research is to apply effect of the pre-mixed combustion quantity and smoke emission in diesel engine. According as air fuel ratio is increased, emission of smoke concentration is linearly reduced. As Injection timing is advanced, smoke concentration is remarkably reduced. It is considered to be the primary cause of the increase in the premixed combustible mixture during long ignition delay period with advancing injection timing. Smoke is increased with increasing engine speed, so it is considered to be the primary cause of the increase of the mass of fuel injected. Smoke is decreased according to the increase of methanol volume ratio. It is considered that the primary cause of the increase in the quantity of pre-mixed combustion.

  • The traditional engine valve train in a combustion engine is the mechanically driven camshaft system that provides one-fixed valve timing. The variable valve timing (VVT), however, is highly required to achieve the significant improvement in fuel economy. To achieve VVT in combustion engine, the solenoid type of actuator had been developed in past years, but it requires current in all operation period, the starting is difficult and the efficiency is low. In this paper, a new linear actuator using permanent magnet (PM) is proposed and verified its feasibility by finite element (FE) analysis.

  • Numerical analysis code has been developed for investigating the combustion characteristics in a slab heater of a steel mill company. Unsteady full 3-Dimensional behaviour can be predicted with the code. Premixed flame model is adopted for combustion phenomena. And eddy dissipation model is used for turbulent flow and non gray FVM method for radiation. Slab movement can be fully traced from entrance into heater until it's exit and computation is performed during that period. Code was validated by comparing the calculation results with experimental ones for the bench scale heater.

  • Heat transfer processes in the combustion chamber of a pebble bed regenerative heat exchanger for MHD power generation has been analyzed numerically for heating, evacuation argon heating periods individually. The calculated result well explain the measured temperature change at the top of the pebble bed. The analytical result point out that the length of evacution period and the geometry optimization both for the combustion chamber and the heat storage bed are very important factors for the improvement of thermal performance in MHD power generation.

  • The NO emissions at the exhaust manifo1d were investigated with a fast NO analyzer to investigate the cycle-by-cycle variations on NO emissions level and the dependence of NO emissions on combustion. The measurement was performed with a part load condition with respect to the mixture ratios and the changes in loads at 1800rpm. The averaged values were obtained during 200 cycles. We found that there is characteristic pattern in 70 emissions from exhaust port and it was possible to set a representative value with the data sampled during specific period. As the load increased, the characteristics of NO emissions were more dependent on combustion pressures. It was also analyzed that the correlation between combustion pressures and NO emissions for different equivalence ratios tends to increase as the mixture goes leaner, Furthermore, this correlation for the lean mixture near the lean limit seemed to be kept.

  • Experimental study of variation of exhaust gas temperature was carried out with the changes of spark timing and exhaust valve timing during the cold start operation of an SI engine. To investigate the effects of these variables on combustion stability, cylinder pressure and exhaust gas temperature were measured and analyzed. Experimental results showed that exhaust gas temperature increased when spark and exhaust valve timings were retarded from the baseline cases. However, combustion stability during cold start deteriorated under the retarded conditions. To increase exhaust gas temperature for fast warmup of catalysts while maintaining combustion stability, an optimal condition for spark and valve timing retard should be appied for the cold start period.
