Assessing Cold Plasma's Impact on Banana Growth and Fusarium Wilt Control

  • Bananas (Musa spp.), which serve millions of people worldwide, face a serious threat from Fusarium wilt (FW) disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc). Developing disease-resistant varieties particularly through breeding is challenging due to banana's seedless nature (parthenocarpic). As an alternative, cold plasma (CP) technology, has the potential to be used for crop improvement. Our study demonstrates a favourable impact of CP on the growth performance of banana (Berangan cultivar, AAA) in terms of height, leaf number and stem diameter. CP-treated plants also displayed delayed disease progression as well as lower disease severity indicated by slightly lower value of leaf symptoms index and rhizome discoloration index compared to the control plants. Additionally, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed differential expression of several defence (PR1, WRKY22, PAL, and CEBiP) and growth (Cytochrome P450, NAC68, and CAT) related genes in CP-treated plants, particularly in conjunction with Foc infection. These findings shed light on the potential use of CP in managing FW in banana and offer insights into possible mechanism behind improved traits.

Identification of Candidate SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) for Growth and Carcass Traits Related to QTL on Chromosome 6 in Hanwoo (Korean Cattle)

  • As genetic markers, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) are very appropriate for the development of genetic tests for economic traits in livestock. Several microsatellite markers have been identified as useful markers for the genetic improvement of Hanwoo. Among those markers, ILSTS035 was recently mapped at a similar position with four SNPs (AH1_11, AH1_9, 31465_446, and 12273_165) in a linkage map of EST-based SNP in BAT6. Among the four SNPs, two SNPs (31465_446 and 12273_165) were analyzed using BLAST at the NCBI web site. The sequences including the 12273_165 SNP were identified at the intron region within the LOC534614 gene on the gene sequence map (Bos taurus NCBI Map view, build 3.1). The LOC534614 gene represents a protein similar to myosin heavy chain, fat skeletal muscle, embryonic isoform 1 in the dog, and myosin_1 (Myosin heavy chain D) in Macaca mulatta. In cattle, the myosin heavy chain was associated with muscle development. The phenotypic data for growth and carcass traits in the 415 animals were analyzed by the mixed ANCOVA (analysis of covariance) linear model using PROC GLM module in SAS v9.1. By the genotyping of Hanwoo individuals (n = 415) to evaluate the association of SNP with growth and carcass traits, it was shown that the 12273_165 SNP region within LOC534614 may be a candidate marker for growth. The results of the statistical analyses suggested that the genotype of the 12273_165 SNP significantly affected birth weight, weight of the cattle at 24 months of age, average daily gain and carcass cold weight (p<0.05). Consequently, the 12273_165 SNP polymorphisms at the LOC534614 gene may be associated with growth in Hanwoo, and functional validation of polymorphisms in LOC534614 should be performed in the future.

Estimation of Waxy Corn Harvest Date over South Korea Using PNU CGCM-WRF Chain (PNU CGCM-WRF Chain을 활용한 남한지역 찰옥수수 수확일 추정)

  • This study predicted waxy corn harvest date in South Korea using 30-year (1991-2020) hindcasts (1-6 month lead) produced by the Pusan National University Coupled General Circulation Model (PNU CGCM)-Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) chain. To estimate corn harvest date, the cumulative temperature is used, which accumulated the daily observed and predicted temperatures from the seeding date (5 April) to the reference temperature (1,650~2,200℃) for harvest. In terms of the mean air temperature, the hindcasts with a bias correction (20.2℃) tends to have a cold bias of about 0.1℃ for the 6 months (April to September) compared to the observation (20.3℃). The harvest date derived from bias-corrected hindcasts (DOY 187~210) well simulates one from observation (DOY 188~211), despite a slight margin of 1.1~1.3 days. The study shows the possibility of obtaining the gridded (5 km) daily temperature and corn harvest date information based on the cumulative temperature in advance for all regions of South Korea.

Elimination of Apple stem grooving virus from 'Mansoo' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia L.) by an antiviral agent combined with shoot tip culture (항바이러스제 처리와 경정배양에 의한 배(Pyrus pyrifolia L.) '만수'의 Apple stem grooving virus 무병화)

  • In this study, in vitro-cultured 'Mansoo' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia L.) plants infected with Apple stem grooving virus (ASGV) were used for testing the efficiency of the virus elimination methods. The shoot tips cut from infected plants were treated by thermotherapy ($37^{\circ}C$), cold therapy ($4^{\circ}C$), chemotherapy with ribavirin, and combination of these methods. Treatment periods were 2, 4, and 8 weeks, and concentrations of ribavirin were 20 and $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. The efficiency of ASGV elimination was evaluated by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. The shoot survival rate was the highest at 100% after cold therapy, chemotherapy, and combination of two methods, while the rate was the lowest at 33.3% after thermotherapy for 2 weeks. The shoot survival rate after chemotherapy decreased gradually as the treatment period was prolonged. The ASGV elimination rate was the highest at 100% after ribavirin treatment at a concentration of $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and combination of ribavirin treatment and thermotherapy for 2 weeks, whereas the ASGV elimination rate after cold therapy was the lowest at 16.7%. However, the efficiency of ASGV elimination was enhanced up to 43.3% by the combination of cold therapy and ribavirin treatment. The efficiency of ASGV elimination for all treatments was increased as the treatment period was prolonged. Based on these results, we suggest that ribavirin treatment at a concentration of $20mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ for 4 weeks or at a concentration of $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ for 2 weeks combined with shoot tip culture was efficient for the elimination of ASGV from pear.

  • 배추의 포장상자를 예냉ㆍ저온유통에 적합한 구조로 개선하기 위하여 3-4포기용 골판지 상자를 T11형 표준 팔레트에 적재율이 96%이상 되게 제작하여 고습조건에서도 안전하게 배추를 보호할 수 있는 상자구조를 찾기 위한 수직압축강도시험과 냉각성능 및 예냉후 품질 변화에 대한 시험을 실시하였다. 가. 배추의 저온유통에 사용하는 골판지포장상자는 개공율을 5.4%로 하고, 포장상자 형태를 접음식 형태로 하는 것이 예냉속도 및 예냉균일도에서 유리하고, 저장후 수직압축강도에서는 브릿스박스에 비하여 낮게 나타났지만, 안전압축강도 이상의 압축강도를 나타내었고 제작단가도 저렴하였다. 나. 예냉 후 저장 중 품질변화는 배추 줄기의 절단력을 측정한 결과 개선된 포장상자에서 유통기한을 6-7일정도 연장시킬 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

Analysis on Food Material Industry in Korea (식재료 산업의 현황 및 발전 방안)

  • In Korea, food material industry encounters the emerging market which results from the growth of food service industry and food processing industry. Food material suppliers think that the total sales in Korean market may be around 20 trillion won. However, very small numbers of studies about Korean food material industry have been conducted. This paper analyzes the current status of food material industry and the market structure in Korea, and presents several suggestions for the development of Korean food material industry as following: building up the function of fresh-cut in production area, improving market structure, settling down the cold-chain system, enforcing the certification program for food safety.

  • This study reports on the modeling and simulation of heat transfer in packaging boxes used for vaccine shipping. Both water and n-tetradecane are used as primary insulation materials inside a multi-slab system. The one-dimensional model, which is a spherical model using a radius equivalent to the rectangular geometry of container, is applied in this study. N-tetradecane with low thermal diffusivity and proper phase transition temperature exhibits higher heat transfer resistance during both heating and cooling processes compared to water. Thus, n-tetradecane is a better candidate as an insulating material for packaging containers for vaccine shipping. Furthermore, the developed method can also become a rapid and economic tool for screening appropriate phase change materials used as insulation materials with suitable properties in logistics applications.

  • 냉동ㆍ냉장식품의 저온유통(cold chain)시스템은 아래의 그림 1에서 보는 바와 같이 상온보다 낮은 온도로 유지되어야 할 대상물을 생산자(생산지)에서부터 소비자(소비지)에 이르기까지 지속적으로 적절한 온도로 유지시켜 생산 당시의 품질상태 그대로 소비자에게 공급하는 유통체계 시스템을 의미하는 것으로, 주요 구성 요소로는 냉동ㆍ냉장 저장창고, 수ㆍ배송시스템, 쇼케이스 등을 들 수 있다. 여기서 대상물이란 구체적으로 농ㆍ수ㆍ축산물, 화훼, 가공 식품, 의약품 등을 의미하며, 저온유통 시스템의 본질적인 목적은 이들 대상물을 적정온도 하에서 일정하게 유지함으로써 생물학적 반응을 적절히 억제하여 대상물의 선도 및 본질적 가치를 연장시키는 것을 포함한다.   • Current food sanitation systems for meat and livestock in Australia ar underpinned by HACCP-based quality assurance. HACCP-based quality assurance programs have been implemented by all australian red meat industry sectors, from 'farm-to-fork'. These quality assurance programs are (along with other quality and food safety considerations) the collection of a series of sanitation steps and strategies that aim to ensure that only healthy, clean livestock are presented for slaughter; those healthy, clean animals enter a clean processing plant; contact of carcase surfaces with potential sources of contamination is avoided; carcase surfaces are decontaminated before chilling; and subsequent growth of potential contaminants is avoided. Prospects for food sanitation systems for meat and livestock in Australia lie largely in enhancing current and applying new sanitation strategies and procedures within our HACCP-based quality assurance framework. Prospects include increased focus on actual (Versus perceived) risks; on-farm/feedlot pathogen elimination; increased implementation of existing (or new) decontamination technologies; and an improved cold chain.

  • To maintain the freshness of produce, because of stand away between produced and consumer, we need refrigeration system that can supply to consumer at cold chain as soon as gathering. General refrigeration system consist of refrigeration chamber or low temperature store. But the vacuum technology can rapidly refrigeration without refrigerator. This precool system possible to get low precooled temperature, suitable for the fishes, the meat, the vegetables, the fruit etc. Especially get advantage that quality maintain through rapid refrigeration of ferment directly generate heat. Vacuum precool system's principle is that water saturated temperature reduce according to pressure is get to vacuum area, so product temperature reduce as water evaporation at product. In vacuum suction, unit, on early experiment period run the rotary type vacuum pump at purpose pressure, then maintain pressure by water-diven ejector. As the results, cabbage took about 60 minutes to reach from $23.2^{\circ}C$ to $4.5^{\circ}C$at 5mgHg abs.
