  • Carbon coils could be synthesized using $C_2H_2/H_2$ as source gases and $SF_6$ as an incorporated additive gas under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. The Ni layer on the $SiO_2$ substrate was used as a catalyst for the formation of the carbon coils. The characteristics (formation densities, morphologies, and geometries) of the as-grown carbon coils on the substrate with or without the $H_2$ plasma pretreatment process were investigated. By the relatively short time (1 minute) $H_2$ plasma pretreatment on the Ni catalyst layered-substrate prior to the carbon coils synthesis reaction, the dominant formation of the carbon microcoils on the substrate could be achieved. After the relatively long time (30 minutes) $H_2$ plasma pretreatment process, on the other hand, we could obtain the noble-shaped geometrical nanostructures, namely the formation of the numerous carbon nanocoils along the growth of the carbon microcoils. This noble-shaped geometrical nanostructure seemed to play a promising role as the good catalyst support for holding the very tiny Ni catalyst grains.

  • The fault current limiting characteristics of superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) using magnetic coupling of two coils were investigated. This SFCL consists of a high-TC superconducting(HTSC) element and two coils with series or parallel connection on the same iron. In normal time, the inner magnetic fluxes generated by two coils are canceled in case that the HTSC element keeps superconducting state. However, in case that the resistance of the HTSC element happens by a short-circuit the magnetic fluxes, not cancelled, induce the voltages across two coils and the fault current can be limited by the impedance of this SFCL. This SFCL has the merit that the operational current of SFCL can be increased higher than the critical current of the superconducting element by adjusting the inductance ratio between two coils. To confirm its operation, the circuit for the fault simulation was constructed. From the measured voltage and current of the SFCL, it was confirmed that the operating current of this SFCL increased more than that of HTSC element's independent operation.

  • Carbon coils could be synthesized on nickel catalyst layer-deposited silicon oxide substrate using $C_2H_2$ and $H_2$ as source gases and $SF_6$ as an additive gas under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. The characteristics (formation density and morphology) of as-grown carbon coils according to the injection stage of $SF_6$ gas incorporation were investigated. A continuous injecting of $SF_6$ gas flow could give rise to many types of carbon coils-related geometries, namely linear tub, micro-sized coil, nano-sized coil, and wave-like nano-sized coil. However, the limitation of the geometry as the nano-sized geometries of carbon coils could be achieved by the incorporation of $SF_6$ in a short time (1 min) during the initial deposition stage. A delayed injection of a short time $SF_6$ gas flow can deteriorate the limitation of the geometries. It confirms that the injection time and its starting point of $SF_6$ gas flow would be very important to determine the geometries of carbon coils.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate and compare the incidence of diffusion-weighted image (DWI) lesions between the Guglielmi detachable coil (GDC) and the Target coil for treating unruptured intracranial aneurysm. Methods : From 2010 to 2011, consecutive 222 patients with an intracranial aneurysm underwent coil embolization. Inclusion criterias were : 1) unruptured intracranial aneurysm, 2) one or more GDC or Target coils used with or without other coils, 3) DWI examination within 24 hours after coiling, and 4) coiling performed without a balloon or stent. Results : Ninety patients (92 cases) met the inclusion criteria. DWI lesions were detected in 55 (61.1%) of 90 patients. In the GDC group (n=44), DWI lesions were detected in 31 (70.5%). The average number of DWI lesions was $5.0{\pm}8.7$ (mean${\pm}$SD; range, 1-40) in aneurysm-related territory. In the Target coil group (n=48), DWI lesions were detected in 24 (50.0%). The number of DWI lesion was $2.1{\pm}5.4$ (range, 1-32) in aneurysm-related territory. There was no significant correlation between a number of coils and DWI lesions. No significant differences were also observed in the number of DWI lesions in each group. Conclusion : The GDC and Target coils, which have an electrolytic detachable system, showed no differences in the incidence of DWI lesion.

  • High temperature superconductor (HTS) winding coil is one of the key component in superconducting device fabrication. Double-pancake style coils are widely used for such application. High resistance between pancake coils greatly affects the machine design, operating condition and thus the stability. In order to reduce such resistance, experimentalists are looking for efficient and damage free coil connecting methods. In this respect, here we proposed parallel joining method to connect the coils. This is to do crossly joining with HTS tapes on two parallel HTS tapes. Joint samples between two parallel HTS tapes were prepared by using HTS tapes and current-voltage (I-V) characteristic curves were investigated at liquid nitrogen temperature i.e., 77.3 K. A 20 cm length joint connected between two parallel HTS tapes shows $32.5n{\Omega}$, for currents up to 250 A. A small HTS magnet, having two double pancake sub-coils connected together through new parallel joint method was fabricated and their current-voltage (I-V) characteristic curve was investigated. At 77.3K, critical current(Ic) of 97 A and resistance of $55n{\Omega}$ for currents upto 130 A were measured. At operating current 86 A lower than Ic, Joule heats generated in whole magnet and at joint region between sub-coils were 226 mW and 0.4 mW, respectively. Low Joule heat generation suggests that this joining method may be used to fabricate HTS magnet or windings.

  • In this paper, Bridcage type RF coils used widely as RF coils for MRI and its applicable type, spiral type RF coil are analyzed and designed using FDTD method. In low tesla (IT, 1.5T) MRI system, several tools have been used for the analysis and design of the RF coils for MRI. This includes, so-called, LC equivalent circuit method for predicting the resonance frequency of the coil and the Biot-Savart law to determine the field distribution within the coil. Both of the circuit analysis and Biot-Savart law are low frequency techniques. Therefore, at high frequency applications, the circuit model approximation breaks down because the coil geometry is a significant fraction of the wavelength. In this paper, we analyzed and designed RF coils for 3T MRI using FDTD method. This method is a full wave analysis and very accurate at low and high frequencies. Also, this RF coils are actually fabricated and FDTD models of RF coils for MRI are proven.

  • The effect of heat treatment conditions on the properties of tungsten(W) embolization coils has been evaluated. The W embolization coils were fabricated by coiling the primary W coil with a diameter of 30.mm on a alumina rod mandrel with a diameter of 2.92mm. The secondary coils were then heat treated at 475$^{\circ}C$and 600$^{\circ}C$ for various heat treatment time ranging from 5 minutes to 36hours. The pitch distance, diameter and shape retention capability of the W embolization coils were characterized after the heat treatment. The pitch distance of the W embolization coils increased with the heat treatment time. The diameter of W emboliazation coils decreased continuously with heat treatment time. The shape retention capability of the W embolization coils increased with the heat treatment time due to an increase in elasticity by formation of tungsten oxide film on W coil surface during the heat treatment. The heat treatment condition of W embolization Col at 600$^{\circ}C$ for 20 minute was considered desirable based on the optimization of the shape retention capability, pitch distance and secondary coil diameter after heat treatment.

  • Carbon coils could be synthesized on nickel catalyst layer-deposited silicon oxide substrate using $C_2H_2$ and $H_2$ as source gases and $SF_6$ as an additive gas under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. The characteristics (formation density and morphology) of as-grown carbon coils were investigated as functions of additive gas flow rate and the cycling on/off modulation of $C_2H_2/SF_6$ flows. Even in the lowest $SF_6$ flow rate (5 sccm) in this work, the cycling on/off modulation injection of $SF_6$ flow for 2 minutes could give rise to the formation of nanosized carbon coils, whereas the continuous injection of $SF_6$ flow for 5 minutes could not give rise to the carbon coils formation. With increasing $SF_6$ flow rates from 5 to 30 sccm, the cycling on/off modulation injection of $SF_6$ flow confines the geometry for the carbon coils to the nanosized ones. Fluorine's role of $SF_6$ during the reaction was regarded as the main cause for the confinement of carbon coils geometries to the nano-sized ones.

  • Carbon coils could be synthesized on nickel catalyst layer-deposited silicon oxide substrate using $C_2H_2$ and $H_2$ as source gases and SF6 as an additive gas under thermal chemical vapor deposition system. The geometries of as-grown carbon materials were investigated with increasing the reaction temperature as the increment of $25^{\circ}C$ from $650^{\circ}C$ up to $800^{\circ}C$. At $650^{\circ}C$, the embryos for carbon coils were formed. With increasing the reaction temperature to $700^{\circ}C$, the coil-type geometries were developed. Further increasing the reaction temperature to $775^{\circ}C$, the development of wave-like nano-sized coils, instead of nano-sized coils, and occasional appearance of micro-sized carbon coils could be observed. Fluorine in $SF_6$ additive may shrink the micro-sized coil diameter via the reduction of Ni catalyst size by fluorine's etching role. Finally, the preparation of the micro-sized carbon coils having the smaller coil diameters, compared with the previously reported ones, could be possible using $SF_6$ additive.
