  • The co-precipitation technique has been applied to synthesize biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP). $Ca(NO_3)_2{\cdot}4H_2O$ and $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ as the starting materials was used. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the structure of as-synthesized and calcined BCP powders. After immersion in Hanks' Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS), for 1 week a precipitation started to be formed with individual small granules on the specimen surface. An MTT assay indicated that BCP powders have no cytotoxic effects on MG-63 cells, and that they have good biocompatibility.

  • To separate and recover of VOCs, supporting membranes using PEI were prepared by phase separation method and it was coated with PDMS to prepare PEI-PDMS hollow composite membrane. To investigate characteristic of prepared membrane, pure gas permeability was measured using oxygen and nitrogen, the stage cut and permeance property with feed concentration were evaluated using xylene, ethyl benzene, toluene and cyclohexane. Also, to check solvent resistance on VOCs, stress-strain property of membrane with immersion time in solvent were measured by DMA. The permeance value of $O_2$ and $N_2$ showed 63 GPU and 30 GPU respectively. Permeated VOCs concentration was decreased with increasing stage cut. But, conversely, recovery efficiency that was increased with increasing stage cut. As a result of DMA test, the stress and strain were 11.93 MPa and 13.52%, respectively.

  • Statement of problem : Ceramic and composite resin have been used to fulfill the demand for esthetic prosthesis. However, ceramic is easy to break and wears off the opposite natural teeth. Conventional composite resin also has low abrasive resistance and color stability. Ceramic Optimized Polymer (ceromer) was developed in mid-1990s to overcome the shortfalls of ceramic and composite resin. Ceromer has similar abrasiveness with the natural tooth and has relatively high strength. Color stability affects esthetics and long-term prognosis of the prosthesis. Purpose The purpose of this study was to compare color stability of ceromers(2 types : $Artglass^{(R)}$. $Targis^{(R)}$) with ceramics ($Vintage^{(R)}$-polishing, $Vintage^{(R)}$-glazing). Material and Method : The color difference(${\Delta}E^*$) was measured by spectrophotometer with different immersion time. Twenty disks, 3mm in thickness and 10mm in diameter, were fabricated for each specimen in shade A2(Vita Lumin shade guide), Specimens (5 samples in each group) were immersed in the food colorants (Red no.3. Yellow no.4, Blue no.1, Distilled water) for 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours respectively. $L^*,\;a^*$ and $b^*$ value were measured with spectrophotometer (CM 503i : Minolta Co., Japan) and mean ${\Delta}E^*$ value was calculated for statistical analysis Results : The results of this study were obtained as follows. 1. The ${\Delta}E^*$ values of all test samples increased with the time of immersion. 2. The ${\Delta}E^*$ values of all materials increased in order of Distilled Water, Yellow no.4, Blue no.1 and fed no.3. There was significant difference between Red no.3 and the other food colorants(p<0.05). 3. The ${\Delta}E^*$ values increased in order of $Vintage^{(R)}$-glazing, $Vintage^{(R)}$-polishing. $Artglass^{(R)}$ and $Targis^{(R)}$. There was significant difference between $Vintage^{(R)}$-glazing and the other materials (p<0.05). Conclusion : By means of the above results, immersion time was found to be a critical factor for color stability of ceromer. For the long-term color stability of prosthesis it is recommended patients having ceromer prosthesis ($Artglass^{(R)},\;Targis^{(R)}$) to reduce the habitual intake of Red no.3 colorants con taming foods.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the electrochemical properties of the thin air-formed oxide film-covered AZ31 Mg alloy. Native air-formed oxide films on AZ31 Mg alloy samples were prepared by knife-abrading method and the changes in the electrochemical properties of the air-formed oxide film were investigated in seven different electrolytes containing the following anions $Cl^-$, $F^-$, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $NO_3{^-}$, $CH_3COO^-$, $CO{_3}^{2-}$, and $PO{_4}^{3-}$. It was observed from open circuit potential (OCP) transients that the potential initially decreased before gradually increasing again in the solutions containing only $CO{_3}^{2-}$ or $PO{_4}^{3-}$ ions, indicating the dissolution or transformation of the native air-formed oxide film into new more protective surface films. The Nyquist plots obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) showed that there was growth of new surface films with immersion time on the air-formed oxide film-covered specimens in all the electrolyte. The least resistive surface films were formed in fluoride and sulphate baths whereas the most protective film was formed in phosphate bath. The potentiodynamic polarization curves illustrated that passive behaviour of AZ31 Mg alloy under anodic polarization appears only in $CO{_3}^{2-}$, or $PO{_4}^{3-}$ ions containing solutions and at more than $-0.4V_{Ag/AgCl}$ in $F^-$ ion containing solution.

  • Panoramic Image provides wider field of view than image from acquisition equipment such as a camera and provides realism and immersion to users compared with single image. Cubic panoramic image provides three dimensional access zooming and rotating in top, bottom, left and right directions. But we require commercial softwares to make a panoramic image and can see distorted images in top and bottom direction. This paper presents a method that constructs cubic panoramic virtual reality image using Apple QuickTimeVR's cubic data structure without any commercial software to make realistic image of top and bottom direction in cubic panoramic virtual reality space.

  • The corrosion behavior of metal covered with mortar under a wet-dry cyclic condition were investigated to apply for the measurement of corrosion rates of reinforcing steel in concrete structure. The carbon steel in mortar having t=3 mm cover thickness was exposed to the alternate condition of 6 h immersion in chloride containing solution and 18 h drying at $25^{\circ}C$ and 50%RH. The electrochemical phenomena of a carbon steel and mortar interface was explained by an equivalent circuit consisting of a solution resistance, a charge transfer resistance and a CPE(Constant Phase Element). The corrosion rates were monitored continuously during exposure using an AC impedance technique. Simultaneously, the current distribution over the working electrode during impedance measurement was analyzed from the phase shift, $\theta$, in an intermediate frequency. The result showed that corrosion rate monitoring using an AC impedance method is suitable under the given exposure conditions even during the drying period when the metal is covered with the wetted mortar.

  • Several methods are available to measure the oxidation of edible oils, such as their acid, peroxide, and anisidine values. However, these methods require large quantities of reagents and are time-consuming tasks. Therefore, a more convenient and time-saving way to measure the oxidation of edible oils is required. In this study, an edible oil-condition sensor was fabricated using single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) made using the spray deposition method. SWNTs were dispersed in a dimethylformamide solution. The suspension was then sprayed using a spray gun onto a prefabricated Au/Ti electrode. To test the sensor, oxidized edible oils, each with a different acid value, were prepared. The SWNT sensors were immersed into these oxidized oils, and the resistance changes in the sensors were measured. We found that the conductivity of the sensors decreased as the oxidation level of the oil increased. In the case of the virgin oil, the resistance change ratio in the SWNT sensor S(%) = {[(Rf - Ri)]/Ri}(%) was more than 40% after immersion for 1 min. However, in the case of the oxidized oil, the resistance change ratio decreased to less than that of the response of the virgin oil. This result suggests that the change in the oil components induced by the oxidation process in edible oils is related to the conductivity change in the SWNT sensor.

  • This paper evaluates the efficacy of magnesium potassium phosphate cements (MKPCs) as waste forms for the solidification of radioactive concrete powder wastes produced by the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. MKPC specimens that contained up to 50 wt% of simulated concrete powder wastes (SCPWs) were evaluated. We measured the porosity and compressive strength of the MKPC specimens, observing them using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The addition of SCPWs reduced the porosity and increased the compressive strength of the MKPC specimens. Struvite-K crystals were well-synthesized, and no additional crystal phase was formed. After thermal cycling and after immersion, MKPC specimens with 50 wt% SCPWs satisfied the waste-acceptance criteria (WAC) for compressive strength. Semi-dynamic leaching tests were performed using the ANS 16.1 method; the leachability indices of Cs, Co, and Sr were 11.45, 17.63, and 15.66, respectively, which also satisfy the WAC. Thus, MKPCs can provide stable matrices to immobilize radioactive concrete wastes generated by the decommissioning of nuclear power plants.

  • There is a growing interest in eco-friendly materials to achieve carbon neutrality, and many studies have been published on the use of functional nanoparticles in natural fibers as smart composites. This study is about the optimization of manufacturing parameters for carbon nanotube (CNT) growth by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on the surface of basalt fiber. Co-Cu-based metal catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation method for CNT growth on the surface of basalt fiber. The catalyst was fixed to basalt fibers through a spray process. The effect of heat treatment temperature conditions and fiber surface conditions on the growth of CNT was evaluated. The growth of CNT was investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to observe changes in their shape and diameter. The tensile strength of the composites using CNT/basalt fiber fabrics and amine-based epoxy as the base material prepared at different heat treatment temperatures was compared and evaluated according to ASTM D3039. We have observed that stable CNT are manufactured at temperatures above 600℃, while carbon nanofibers (CNF) are fabricated at temperatures above 400℃. The sizing material present on the surface of the basalt fiber was a hindrance to CNT growth.
