  • $Co_3O_4$, $Al_2O_3$ and $Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ mesoporous powders were prepared by a sol-gel method with starting matierals of aluminum isopropoxide and cobalt (II) nitrate. A P123 template is employed as an active organic additive for improving the specific surface area of the mixed oxide by forming surfactant micelles. A transition metal cobalt oxide supported on alumina with and without P123 was tested to find the most active and selective conditions as a heterogeneous catalyst in the reaction of styrene epoxidation. A bBlock copolymer-P123 template was added to the staring materials to control physical and chemical properties. The properties of $Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ powder with and without P123 were characterized using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM), a Bruner-Emmertt-Teller (BET) surface analyzer, and $^{27}Al$ MAS NMR spectroscopy. Powders with and without P123 were compared in catalytic tests. The catalytic activity and selectivity were monitored by GC/MS, $^1H$, and $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy. The performance for the reaction of epoxidation of styrene was observed to be in the following order: [$Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ with P123-1173 K > $Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ with P123-973 K > $Co_3O_4$-973 K>$Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$-973 K > $Co_3O_4$/$Al_2O_3$ with P123-1473 K > $Al_2O_3$-973 K]. The existence of ${\gamma}$-alumina and the nature of the surface morphology are related to catalytic activity.

  • The etching reaction of $UO_2$ in $CF_4/O_2$ gas plasma is examined as functions of $CF_4/O_2$ ratio, plasma power, and substrate temperature at up to $370^{\circ}C$ under the total pressure of 0.30 Torr. It is found that the highest etching rate is obtained at 20% $O_2$ mole fraction, regardless of r. f. power and substrate temperature. The existence of the optimum $CF_4/O_2$ ratio is confirmed by SEM, XPS and XRD analysis. The highest etching reaction rate at $370^{\circ}C$ under 150W exceeds 1000 monolayers/min., which is equivalent to 0.4$\mu\textrm{m}$/min. The mass spectrometry analysis results reveal that the major reaction product is uranium hexa-fluoride $UF_6$. Based on the experimental findings, dominant overall reaction of uranium dioxide in $CF_4/O_2$ plasma is determined : $8UO_2+12CF_4+3O_2=8UF_6+12CO_{2-x}$ where $CO_{2-x}$ represents the undetermined mix of $CO_2$ and CO.

  • MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are known to negatively control protein-coding genes by binding to messenger RNA (mRNA) in the cytoplasm. In innate immunity, the role of miRNA gene silencing is largely unknown. In this study, we performed microarray-based experiments using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages derived from wild-type, MyD88 knockout (KO), TRIF KO, and MyD88/TRIF double KO mice. We employed a statistical approach to determine the importance of the commonality and specificity of miRNA binding sites among groups of temporally co-regulated genes. We demonstrate that both commonality and specificity are irrelevant to define a priori groups of co-down regulated genes. In addition, analyzing the various experimental conditions, we suggest that miRNA regulation may not only be a late-phase process (after transcription) but can also occur even early (1h) after stimulation in knockout conditions. This further indicates the existence of dynamic interactions between miRNA and signaling molecules/transcription factor regulation; this is another proof for the need of shifting from a 'hard-wired' paradigm of gene regulation to a dynamical one in which the gene co-regulation is established on a case-by-case basis.

  • An experimental study was conducted to find the effect of a pilot flame on the flammability of inert-gas-diluted methane and propane. The diffusion pilot flame was formed with propane at the innermost nozzle of a concentric triple co-flow burner. The main diffusion flame was formed with nitrogen-diluted methane or propane at the outermost nozzle of the burner. An air flow was located in-between. The results showed that the existence of the pilot flame helped stabilizing the main flame even at the flammability limit concentration of nitrogen-diluted fuel. The co-flow burner generated re-circulation zones and local variation of equivalence ratio depending on the flow rates of the reactants, which are known to help flame stabilization. Hot-wire experiments confirmed that both heating of the reactants and supplying of active chemical species by the pilot flame contributed to stabilization of the main flame. The results of this study would suggest a design concept for an efficient SVRU system that minimizes the emission of unburned hydrocarbon fuel from ship fuel tanks.

  • To realize a zero-energy building, a technology that minimizes the energy loss due to thermal bridges by preventing their formation is emerging as an important design factor. In this study, we develop a thermal bridge breaker to prevent thermal bridging in a metal panel roof and attempt to analyze the effects of its application. To this end, we fabricated a thermal bridge breaker and analyzed it in terms of its strength and heat-transfer characteristics, in addition to conducting a load simulation. The thermal bridge prevention effect of the developed thermal bridge breaker improved the insulation performance of the metal panel roof, and the results of a cooling/heating peak load simulation performed by applying the heat transmission resistance test results to a building proved the existence of this effect.

  • Erwinia amylovora and E. pyrifoliae are the causative agents of destructive diseases in both apple and pear trees viz. fire blight and black shoot blight, respectively. Since the introduction of fire blight in Korea in 2015, the occurrence of both pathogens has been independently reported. The co-incidence of these diseases is highly probable given the co-existence of their pathogenic bacteria in the same trees or orchards in a city/district. Hence, this study evaluated whether both diseases occurred in neighboring orchards and whether they occurred together in a single orchard. The competition and virulence of the two pathogens was compared using growth rates in vitro and in planta. Importantly, E amylovora showed significantly higher colony numbers than E. pyrifoliae when they were co-cultured in liquid media and co-inoculated into immature apple fruits and seedlings. In a comparison of the usage of major carbon sources, which are abundant in immature apple fruits and seedlings, E. amylovora also showed better growth rates than E. pyrifoliae. In virulence assays, including motility and a hypersensitive response (HR), E. amylovora demonstrated a larger diameter of travel from the inoculation site than E. pyrifoliae in both swarming and swimming motilities. E. amylovora elicited a HR in tobacco leaves when diluted from 1:1 to 1:16 but E. pyrifoliae does not elicit a HR when diluted at 1:16. Therefore, E. amylovora was concluded to have a greater competitive fitness than E. pyrifoliae.

  • Variation of magnetic properties through Cr substitution for Co in inverse-spinel $CoFe_2O_4$ has been investigated by vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) and conversion electron $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy (CEMS). $Cr_{x}Co_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$ samples were prepared as thin films by a sol-gel method. The lattice constant of the $Cr_{x}Co_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$ samples was found to remain unchanged, explainable in terms of a reduction of tetrahedral $Fe^{3+}$ ion to $Fe^{2+}$ due to substitution of $Cr^{3+}$ ion into octahedral $Co^{2+}$ site. The existence of the tetrahedral $Fe^{2+}$ ions in $Cr_{x}Co_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$ was confirmed by CEMS analysis. Room-temperature magnetic hysteresis curves for the $Cr_{x}Co_{1-x}Fe_2O_4$ films measured by VSM revealed that the saturation magnetization $M_s$ increases by Cr doping. The $M_s$ is maximized when x = 0.1 and decreases for higher x but is still bigger than that of $CoFe_2O_4$. The increase of $M_s$ can be explained partly by the reduction of the tetrahedral $Fe^{3+}$ ion to $Fe^{2+}$.
