  • Purpose: This study was performed to identify the level of career identity and clinical competency and the relationships between them in nursing students. Method: Subjects were junior students of 2 colleges in Daegu(N=217). A self-rating questionnaire included demographic data, career identity of nursing students and the clinical competency Korean scale. We received consents from teachers and students. The data was analyzed by frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient using the SPSS 12.0 Program. Result: The mean score of career identity was 31.90 points and clinical competency was 145.13. Career identity showed a significant difference in the age, satisfaction of college entrance and satisfaction of clinical practice. Clinical competency showed a significant difference in the sex, marriage, satisfaction of college entrance and satisfaction of clinical practice. The data showed a negative correlation between career identity and clinical competency. Conclusion: It is necessary to find affecting factors on career identity of nursing students and to develop objective tools for clinical competency and to improve clinical competency programs.

  • Purpose: This study investigated clinical competency, COVID-19-related anxiety, coping strategies, self-efficacy, and perceived stress among graduating nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey. Participants were recruited from universities located in four major cities in South Korea. General demographic information, clinical competency, self-efficacy, perceived stress, COVID-19-related anxiety, and coping strategies were assessed using reliable questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and multiple regression tests were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean clinical competency, self-efficacy, perceived stress, adaptive coping, and maladaptive coping were 138.16 ± 18.34, 83.85 ±14.02, 21.37 ± 5.79, 53.15 ± 4.64, and 30.98 ± 6.73, respectively. COVID-19-related anxiety was reported by 4.3% of participants. Clinical competency was significantly positively correlated with self-efficacy (r = .44, p < .001) and adaptive coping (r = .20, p = .035) and was significantly negatively correlated with maladaptive coping (r = .20, p = .035). The predictors of clinical competency were self-efficacy (β = .434, p < .001) and adaptive coping (β = .173, p < .039), which explained 23% of the variance in clinical competency. Conclusion: Self-efficacy and adaptive coping strategies are significant predictors of clinical competence during the pandemic. Planning and implementing various curricular and non-curricular activities to increase senior students' self-efficacy and adaptive coping strategies will help prepare competent nursing graduates for the pandemic when they enter the nursing workforce.

Method: This study used a descriptive design with a survey method. A total of 193 nursing students were recruited from 4 colleges of nursing in C city, and A and B province in Korea. The data was collected using questionnaires from October 6, 2017 to October 24, 2017. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis. Result: There were showed significant positive relationships of clinical practice competency with ego-resilience. In addition, critical thinking dispositions had a partial mediating role in the relationship between ego-resilience and clinical practice competency. Conclusion: This study identified the mediating effects of critical thinking dispositions and how to improve clinical practice competency. The results of this study can be used as basic data for establishing an educational approach to enhance clinical practice competency, which is considered a key competency for nursing college students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of clinical competency and self-directed learning in nursing students. Method: This study was conducted at two nursing colleges with students in a 2 year undergraduate nursing program. Data were collected from 182 students by means of self reporting questionnaires from October 1 to October 8, 2004. The data were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 PC programs using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient. Result: The questionnaire of students' clinical competency consisted of nineteen items based on a five point summated rating scale and was categorized into six subscales by factor analysis. The six subscales are nursing process, major nursing intervention, education for clients, observation and physical examination, and fundamental nursing. The more adaptable to major, the higher clinical competency (F= 3.406, p= .035) and self-directed learning (F= 7.444, p= .001). There was a positive correlation between students' clinical competency and self-directed learning (r= .367, p= .001). Conclusion: we concluded that future research should explore strategies for the development of self-directed learning to improve clinical competency of nursing students.

Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design conducted between October and December 2021. The participants included 40 nursing students (20 each in the experimental and control groups) at a university in a South Korean city. The pediatric nursing competency-building program integrated problem-based learning and simulation into clinical field practice. The experimental group participated in the program, while the control group did not. Data were analyzed using the 𝑥2 test, the independent t-test, and repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: Pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance showed a greater increase in the experimental group than in the control group. However, the change in problem-solving ability in the experimental group was not significantly different from that in the control group. Conclusion: The pediatric nursing competency-building program effectively improved students' pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance.

  • Purpose: This study compares differences between male and female nursing students in terms of the level of stress experienced during clinical practice settings, stress coping mechanisms and clinical competency. Method: The study population was nursing students who had taken a clinical practice course at one of five general hospitals in city D. Data were collected from September 15 to October 15, 2013 through a structured self-administered questionnaire survey given to 319 subjects (156 male students, 163 female students) enrolled in a statistical analysis course. Results: Male nursing students experienced lower stress levels during clinical practice and higher clinical competency than female students. In terms of stress coping mechanisms, male students were significantly more active than female students in deploying coping strategies. Among all students, students with higher clinical practice stress and concomitant stress coping scores exhibited higher clinical competency. Conclusion: Noticeable differences between male and female nursing students in terms of stress levels arising in the course of clinical practice, stress coping strategies, and clinical competency were revealed. However, further identification of specific stressful situations for male and female nursing students and subsequent management of clinical training circumstances are required.
