  • Recently, due to lack of sand suppy, the cost of sand has increase. Therefore, alternative materials are needed. So, in this study the Crush Stone Compaction Pile used in America and Europe has been compared and analyzed Sand Compaction Pile used in Korea. Tests were performed at various sizes of Crush Stone and replacement ratio. Frist, it was compared and analyzed with low and high replacement ratio with the same size of crush stone. Second, it was compared and analyzed with different size of crush stone at constant replacement ratio. The result of these tests were compared with sand of the same replacement ratio. Here, the properties that were comares and analyzed are the ultimate bearing capacity and quantity of ground upheaval.

  • The purpose of this study is investigated the method for estimation of the liquefaction on the reclaimed land, located in Incheon and assessed the ability of liquefaction under the condition of criteria, which is the magnitude '6.5' of seismic on the basis of the domestic seismic characteristics. Performed not only field test but the experiment as well to study how the fine content would affect into the dreging and reclaimed land and also estimated the safety factor through the empirical method and anticipated detail method based on the results. Within the reclaimed land, there are many sized soils which are almost extended from well-graded silty sand(SM) to poor-graded fine grained sand, and which have the condition, so called, the liquefaction which is easily to bring into under the circumstances within the ground. However, partly, now that the soil is mixed with silt and silty clay which include the content of fine grained dust quite a bit, the difficulties and inconveniences has been expected while trying to find the ratio of cyclic resistance, but finally Seed and Idriss method showed the most way when we estimate the safety factor on the liquefaction.

  • The resistivity of soils depends on grains size, porosity, water saturation, pore fluid resistivity, caly contents and son on. It is very important to understand the relationship between resistivity and such physical properties of soils, in order to interpret and evaluate ground conditions by using resistivity data obtained from electrical resistivity prospecting. In this paper, to study the relationship between resistivity and physical properties of soils, the resistivity of glass beads and compacted soil samples both in saturated and unsaturated conditions is measured. As the results, the resistivity of saturated soils depends mainly on porosity and clay contents, while that of unsaturated soils is sensitive to compaction conditions, and decreases with increasing water content until the optimum water condition, that is the maximum dry density. But, the relationship between resistivity and water saturation for soils is unique, being independent of compaction energy. Also, the resistivity ratio decrease with increasing water saturation, followed by no significant change of resistivity ratio over 80 percent of water saturation (the optimum water content).

  • The compulsory replacement method for soft ground treatment is simple but excellent in economic feasibility. However, the accurate replacement depth is not easy to properly predicted since an theoretical algorithm has not presently been established so far. In this research a prediction equation is proposed in a new form based on the liquid limit and natural moisture content rather than on the bearing capacity of the soft soil layer. The equation is based on the monitoring as well as the confirmatory boring at the site. In addition, the equation has been derived from the data obtained from the analysis of the characteristics of silt/clay of Sihwa region. The final prediction equation has been drawn by applying the regression analysis method.

  • Stone column installation is a convenient method for improvement of soft ground. In very soft clays, in order to increase the lateral confinement of the stone columns, encasing the columns with high stiffness and creep resistant geosynthetics has proved to be a successful solution. This paper presents the results of three dimensional finite element analyses for evaluating improvement in behaviour of ordinary stone columns (OSCs) installed in soft clay by geotextile encasement under monotonic and cyclic loading by a comprehensive parametric study. The parameters include length and stiffness of encasement, types of stone columns (floating and end bearing), frictional angle and elastic modulus of stone column's material and diameter of stone columns. The results indicate that increasing the stiffness of encasement clearly enhances cyclic behaviour of geotextile encased stone columns (GESCs) in terms of reduction in residual settlement. Performance of GESCs is less sensitive to internal friction angle and elasticity modulus of column's materials in comparison with OSCs. Also, encasing at the top portion of stone column up to triple the diameter of column is found to be adequate in improving its residual settlement and at all loading cycles, end bearing columns provide much higher resistance than floating columns.

  • In this study, two large pile load tests were performed in the deep sand gravel deposit of Nakdong river basin so that the characteristics of the load transfer was identified. The fully instrumented rectangular barrette pile in the size of $1.5\times3.0m$ and the circular bored pile of the diameter 1.5 m were placed into the ground below 50 m. Under the applied loads of 2,400 tonf and 4,000 tonf, the test results of the load transfer showed the portion of 83% and 93% of the applied loads on the barrette pile and the bored pile, respectively, were supported by the skin friction along the pile shaft. It was revealed that the most of these skin friction mobilized in sand layer underlying clay layer having N-value more than 30 and that the friction per unit area of the bored pile was larger than the friction of barrette pile. However, if embedded in the stiff sand graval layer, the both piles were proven to be sufficient for using as the friction piles.

  • The geology of Nogsan industrial estate area, Pusan, Korea consists mainly of andesitic rocks, rhyolitic rocks and hornblende granite. They are then intruded by basic and acidic dikes. All of the igneous activities in this area are in Cretaceous time, that is the lower part of Silla group in Gyoungsang basin. Andesitic volcanic rocks are distributed in two separate basines: Saengok basin and Doodong basin. Although both basines contain andesite and andesitic breccia(Kab), younger andesitic activity was more active to the western Doodong basin giving very little influence on the eastern Saengok basin. Sediments in the area are quarternaly alluvium and colluvium. Alluvium is very thick and consists mainly of silt and clay deposited as delta deposits at the mouth of Nakdong river. Colluvium in the area is short distributary channel deposits. The area is largely filled with socks and sediments to build industrial estates especially on the delta deposits at Shinhodong area and on the shoreline mud bed between Yongwondong and Shinhodong. A careful investigation to avoid the possibility of a large scale mud flow is suggested because it could be trigered by many reason such as an earthquake or a flood on the land where a heavily loaded salt-water may soaked into the muddy bed lying on the granitic basement gently dipping toward the ocean. Althouth the area is in the Yangsan fault zone no ground evidence of fault can be seen despite the RESTEC sattlite image gives excelent traces of linearments in the area.

  • The flat dilatometer test(DMT) is a useful geotechnical tool for estimating in-situ properties of various types of ground materials and the application of flat DMT is increasing. The existing relationships which are used to estimate the design parameters of soft deposit depend on the regional geotechnical characteristics and then it is necessary to investigate the applicability of the flat dilatometer in Korea. In this paper, the flat DMT has been conducted in soft marine deposits. The results estimated by existing relationships and those obtained from laboratory tests were compared. Based on the results, some factors influencing the relationships were examined and adjustment of empirical expression was performed.

  • Helical anchors are foundation structure that designed to resist uplift loads are installed by applying in load to shaft while rotating it into the ground. These can be a cost effective means of proving tension anchorage for foundation where soil conditions permit their installation because of ease of installation. At present time, tapered helical anchors are commonly used to carry uplift loads. The uplift capacity includes the following factors : the height of overburden above the top helix, the resistant along a cylinder, the weight of the soil in the cylinder and suction force. In order to make clear behavior characteristics of helical anchors with pullout, model tests were conducted with respect to various embedment depth, space of helix, shape of helix. Based on the experimental study, the following conclusions are drawn. 1) The uplift capacity of multi helical anchors increase with embedment ratio of anchors The increase is smooth after critical uplift capacity. 2) Critical breakout factors and critical embedment ratio of multi helical anchor exist 7∼8, 4∼6 respectively. 3) Variation of uplift capacity with helix spaces show down after S/D=5. 4) Critical breakout factors of helical anchor in the laboratory test are similar to Das's theory.

  • Material functions about effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has important role to predict consolidation velocity and settlement of soft ground. Modified oedometer for radial drainage is adapted to find out material functions on laboratory tests. Undisturbed sample for laboratory tests were taken from construction sites of industrial complexes on southern coastal area which consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer. For different drainage condition in consolidation process void ratio, effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has been assessed with results of existing standard oedometer tests. It is worthwhile to note that consolidation material functions could be expressed as regression equation by Stark (2005), heterogeneity for permeability could be assessed from these relationships.
