A heat exchanger tube array in a heat recovery steam generator is exposed to hot exhaust gas flow that can cause flow induced vibrations, which could damage the heat exchanger tube array. The characteristics of flow induced vibration in the tube array need to be established for the structural safe operation of a heat exchanger. Several studies of the flow induced vibrations of typical heat exchangers have been conducted and the nondimensional PSD (Power Spectral Density) function with the Strouhal number, fD/U, had been derived using an experimental method. The present study examined the results of the previous experimental research on the nondimensional PSD characteristics by CFD analysis and the basis for the application of flow induced vibration to the heat recovery steam generator tube array was determined from the present CFD analysis. The present CFD analysis introduced circular cylinder tube array and calculated using unsteady laminar flow for the tube array. The characteristics of lift and drag fluctuations over the cylinder tube array was investigated. The derived nondimensional lift and drag PSD was compared with the results of the previous experimental research and the characteristics of lift and drag PSD for a circular cylinder tube array was established from the present CFD study.

The objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the noise propagating characteristics, the noise reduction mechanism and the performance of a slotted tube attached at the exit plane of a circular convergent nozzle. The experiment is performed through the systematic change of the jet pressure ratio and the slot length under the condition of two kinds of open area ratios, 25% and 51%. The open area ratio calculated by the tube length equivalent for the slot length is defined as the ratio of the total slot area to the surface area of a slotted tube. The experimental results for the near and far field sound, the visualization of jet structures and the static pressure distributions in the jet passing through a slotted tube are presented and explained in comparison with those for a simple tube. The propagating characteristics of supersonic jet noises from the slotted tube is closely connected with the slot length rather than the open area ratio, and its propagating pattern is similar to the simple tube. It is shown that the slotted tube has a good performance to suppress the shock-associated noise as well as the turbulent mixing noise in the range of a limited jet pressure and slot dimension. The considerable suppression of the shock‘associated noise is mainly due to the pressure relief caused by the high-speed jets passing through the slots on the tube. Both the strength of shock waves and the interval between them in a jet plume are decreased by the pressure relief. Moreover, the pressure relief is divided into the gradual and the sudden relief depending upon the open area ratio of the slotted tube. Consequently, the shock waves in a jet plume are also changed by the type of pressure relief. The gradual pressure relief caused by the slotted tube with the open area ratio 25% generates the weak oblique shock waves. On the contrary, the weak normal shock waves appear due to the sudden pressure relief caused by the slotted tube with the open area ratio 51%.

Numerical study on the new design of the liquid mass flow meter in infinitesimal flow rate for semiconductor production is performed. The heater and thermistor are wired on the circular tube about 0.3mm inner diameter with designed gap between them. After the time interval from the single pulse heating the thermistor reaches its peak temperature and this time interval is almost inversely proportional to the liquid mass flow rate. The axial conduction in tube wall and convection through the flow is combined. As a result, the peak temperature moving velocity is much smaller than flow mean velocity and there is no linear relationship between them. In this study, the effects of design parameters such as the tube inner/outer diameter, wired heater width, and the gap between heater and thermistor are investigated and the trends of optimization in these parameters are discussed.

In this paper, a hollow steel tube (HST) shear connector is proposed for use in a slim-floor system. The HST welded to a perforated steel beam web and embedded in concrete slab. A total of 10 push-out tests were conducted under static loading to investigate the mechanical behavior of the proposed HST connector. The variables were the shapes (circular, square and rectangular) and sizes of hollow steel tubes, and the compressive strength of the concrete. The failure mode was recorded as: concrete slab compressive failure under the steel tube and concrete tensile splitting failure, where no failure occurred in the HST. Test results show that the square shape HST in filled via concrete strength 40 MPa carried the highest shear load value, showing three times more than the reference specimens. It also recorded less slip behavior, and less compressive failure mode in concrete underneath the square hollow connector in comparison with the circular and rectangular HST connectors in both concrete strengths. The rectangular HST shows a 20% higher shear resistance with a longer width in the load direction in comparison with that in the smaller dimension. The energy absorption capacity values showed 23% and 18% improvements with the square HST rather than a headed shear stud when embedded in concrete strengths of 25 MPa and 40 MPa, respectively. Moreover, an analytical method was proposed and predicts the shear resistance of the HST shear connectors with a standard deviation of 0.14 considering the shape and size of the connectors.

Recent research on steel moment-resisting connection between steel beams and concrete filled steel tubes has shown that there are considerable advantages to be obtained by anchoring the connection to the concrete infill within the tube using anchors in blind bolts. In the research reported here, extensive experimental tests and numerical analyses have been performed to study the anchorage behaviour of cogged deformed reinforcing bars within concrete filled circular steel tubes. This data in essential knowledge for the design of the steel connections that use anchored blind bolts, both for strength and stiffness. A series of pull-out tests were conducted using steel tubes with different diameter to thickness ratios under monotonic and cyclic loading. Both hoop strains and longitudinal strains in the tubes were measured together with applied load and slip. Various lead-in lengths before the bend and length of tailed extension after the bend were examined. These dimensions were limited by the dimensions of the steel tube and did not meet the requirements for "standard" cogs as specified in concrete standards such as AS 3600 and ACI 318. Nevertheless, all of the tested specimens failed by bar fracture outside the steel tubes. A comprehensive 3D Finite Element model was developed to simulate the pull-out tests. The FE model took into account material nonlinearities, deformations in reinforcing bars and interactions between different surfaces. The FE results were found to be in good agreement with experimental results. This model was then used to conduct parametric studies to investigate the influence of the confinement provided by the steel tube on the infilled concrete.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the flexural behavior of circular concrete filled carbon tube(CFCT) columns subjected to constant axial load with the cyclic lateral load. Six numbers of composite columns were tested. Two parameters, winding angle and thickness of tube, were chosen to evaluate the flexural capacity and behavior of CFCT columns. Selected two parameters were considered simultaneously in order to evaluate the flexural behavior of CFCT columns more precisely. Flexural strength, deformation capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of CFCT columns were evaluated by calculating the area of load-displacement envelop curves and load-displacement hysteresis curves obtained from experiment. Also, the ductile capacity obtained from experiment were compared to that of reinforced masonry wall for the comparison of existing structural element.
Durability problems may arise in the concrete, which is one of the major construction materials, used in the construction field. Bridge piers and foundation piles are usually made with concrete and they are exposed to the moisture and hence the durability of the concrete reduced significantly due to oxidization of re-bar and icing of concrete. To mitigate such problems, FRP tube has been developed and the concrete filled FRP tube (CFFT) has been investigated to find the confinement effect which is provided additionally. It was reported that if the concrete is wrapped with FRP, strength and chemical resistance are improved significantly. In order to apply such a member in the construction field, structural behavior and applicable design guideline or design criteria must be thoroughly investigated. In the experimental investigation, the results are compared with the previous research results and the relationship which can predict the ultimate strength and strain is suggested. In addition, some comments found at the compression tests are given briefly.
An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake flow behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using a constant temperature anemometer and flow visualization. Various vortex shedding modes are observed. Fin height and pitch are closely related to the vortex shedding frequency after a certain transient Reynolds number. The through velocity across the fins decreases with increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by the velocity distribution just on top of the finned tube. The weaker gradient of velocity distribution is shown as increasing the freestream velocity and the fin height, while decreasing the fin pitch. The weaker velocity gradient delays the entrainment flow and weakens its strength. As a result of this phenomenon, vortex shedding is decreased. The effective diameter is defined as a virtual circular cylinder diameter taking into account the volume of fins, while the hydraulic diameter is proposed to cover the effect of friction by the fin surfaces. The Strouhal number based upon the effective diameters seems to correlate well with that of a circular cylinder without fins. After a certain transient Reynolds number, the trend of the Strouhal number can be estimated by checking the ratio of effective diameter to inner diameter. The normalized velocity and turbulent intensity distributions with the hydraulic diameter exhibit the best correlation with the circular cylinder's data.
The flexural strength of circular concrete-filled tubes (CCFT) can be estimated by several codes such as ACI, AISC, and Eurocode 4. In AISC and Eurocode, two methods are recommended, which are the strain compatibility method (SCM) and the plastic stress distribution method (PSDM). The SCM of AISC is almost the same as the SCM of the ACI method, while the SCM of Eurocode is similar to the ACI method. Only the assumption of the compressive stress of concrete is different. The PSDM of Eurocode approach is also similar to the PSDM of AISC, but they have different definitions of material strength. The PSDM of AISC is relatively easier to use, because AISC provides closed-form equations for calculating the flexural strength. However, due to the complexity of calculation of circular shapes, it is quite difficult to determine the flexural strength of CCFT following other methods. Furthermore, all these methods give different estimations. In this study, an effort is made to review and compare the codes to identify their differences. The study also develops a computing program for the flexural strength of circular concrete filled tubes under pure bending that is in accordance with the codes. Finally, the developed computing algorithm, which is programmed in MATLAB, is used to generate design aid graphs for various steel grades and a variety of strengths of steel and concrete. These design aid graphs for CCFT beams can be used as a preliminary design tool.

Concrete Filled Fibre Reinforced Polymer Tube (CFFT) for new columns construction has attracted significant research attention in recent years. The CFFT acts as a formwork for new columns and a barrier to corrosion accelerating agents. It significantly increases both the strength capacity (Strength enhancement ratio) and the ductility (Strain enhancement ratio) of reinforced concrete columns. In this study, based on predefined selection criteria, experimental investigation results of 134 circular CFFT columns under axial compression have been compiled and analysed from 599 CFFT specimens available in the literature. It has been observed that actual confinement ratio (expressed as a function of material properties of fibres, diameter of CFFT and compressive strength of concrete) has significant influence on the strength and ductility of circular CFFT columns. Design oriented models have been proposed to compute the strength and strain enhancement ratios of circular CFFT columns. The proposed strength and strain enhancement ratio models have significantly reduced Average Absolute Error (AAE), Mean Square Error (MSE), Relative Standard Error of Estimate (RSEE) and Standard Deviation (SD) as compared to other available strength and strain enhancement ratios of circular CFFT column models. The predictions of the proposed strength and strain enhancement ratio models match well with the experimental strength and strain enhancement ratios investigation results in the compiled database.
