The impact of Academic Resilience of Chinese Students Participating in Sports on their Adaptation to College Life

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of Chinese international students' academic resilience on acculturation stress and college life adjustment. In order to achieve this research objective, the research subjects were Chinese students participating in sports in Korea. The sampling method was convenience sampling, and a total of 300 people, 150 men and 150 women, were selected as research subjects through sharing the questionnaire link online and email. The research tool used in this study was a questionnaire. Based on the questionnaire that had secured reliability and validity in previous research, it was modified and supplemented to suit this study. The statistical analysis used for data analysis was frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS Windows 22.0 Version. The conclusions obtained in this study through data analysis according to these methods and procedures are as follows. First, the academic elasticity of Chinese students participating in sports has partially influenced by cultural adaptation stress. Second, the academic elasticity of Chinese students participating in sports has partially influenced by university life. Third, the acculturation stress of Chinese students participating in sports was found to partially affect their adaptation to university life.

Survey of Korean Food Acknowledgement and Preference by Chinese Students in Daejeon (대전 지역 중국 유학생들의 한국 음식에 대한 인지도와 기호도)

  • The acknowledgement and preference for Korean food by Chinese students in the Daejeon area of Korea was surveyed. The students(n=132) were comprised of 57.6% males and 42.4% females, with 56.1% being >20-years-of-age and 43.9% being<20-years-of-age and 42.4% being Korean residents for over 1 year. The most recognizable aspect of Korean food was familiarity with Kimchi, Bulgogi and Bibimbap. Participants were least aware of the affordability of Korean food. Average understanding for Korean food of the Chinese students was 2.77~3.00 on a 5 point scale. Participants highly preferred(in order) Ssalbap, Gomtang and Bulgogi, while Dolsotbap, Samgyetang and Gimgui were not preferred. Female students preferred Gamjatang and Manduguk more than male students. Those students who had lived in Korea for over 1 year preferred Bulgogi and Samgyeopsal, and those residing<3 months preferred Guksujangguk. Over half of the students surveyed had knowledge of Korean food and its preparation; of these students, Korean food preferences were for Kalguksu, Mul Naengmyeon, Moosengchae, and Oisengchae.

The Effect of Perceived Website Quality of Fashion Shopping on Customer Satisfaction and Repurchase Intentions for Korean and Chinese College Students (한.중 대학생들의 의류쇼핑 웹사이트 품질지각에 따른 고객만족과 재구매의도)

  • This study investigates the dimensionality of perceived web site quality for fashion e-retailers to compare the differences in perceived web site quality between Korean and Chinese college students in the identification of the decisive web site quality dimensions for customer satisfaction and repurchase intentions. Data were collected from 300 Korean and 300 Chinese online apparel shoppers. The survey was statistically analyzed by factor analysis, T-test, and regression analysis. The perceived service quality dimensions were identified as product quality, economic efficiency, information quality, site design, and trust. The Chinese college students had significantly higher evaluations than Korean college students on information quality and trust. For Korean college students, product quality, economic efficiency, and trust were the most decisive predictors of customer satisfaction and they have indirect effects on repurchase intentions. For Chinese college students, product quality and information quality were identified as the most decisive predictors of customer satisfaction and they have indirect effects on repurchase intentions. Strategic directions for e-commerce business targeting Korean or Chinese college students are suggested in the conclusion.

Cross-Cultural Management in China

  • Purpose - This paper discusses cross-cultural management (CCM) in China and how its business students get prepared by university cross-cultural management courses for an international market. Research design, data, and methodology - It was therefore decided to do an online content analysis looking at CCM courses offered by a number of Chinese universities first, and second to conduct a quantitative survey on CCM courses as well as topics among Chinese undergraduate business students at a large Eastern Chinese university. Results - From fundamental aspects, seven Chinese cultural standards emerge which highly influence the behaviour of the Chinese. There is a tendency to imply the integration of not only local but also cross cultural issues in academic management courses. Besides Hong Kong, there are currently 17 Chinese universities and schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) that explicitly requires cross-cultural management competencies in undergraduate and graduate degree programmes. In addition, the study confirmed that two-third of the sample (Chinese undergraduate business students) had taken cross-cultural management courses. Conclusions - The results of this research have made it clear that Chinese universities and schools are aware of the importance of cross-cultural management competencies.

Study on Entrepreneurial Intention of Chinese University Students (중국 대학생의 창업 의도에 관한 연구)

  • Due to their participation in commercial activities between countries, many small and medium-sized trading companies are more of a born-global venture. The entrepreneurial intention is one of the key drivers impacting the formation of this born-global venture. In recent the importance of venture founding has been emphasized on a global scale. How to revitalize venture founding is becoming a nation-wide challenge in emerging economies as well as advanced countries. In particular, under the banner of 'Many people founding venture, Many people creating innovation', a new-coined word 'Choangker', an innovative founder of a venture, appeared in China. Existing studies have focused on entrepreneurial intention as a key driver that could affect whether a latent entrepreneur would actually found a venture or not. In this paper, we wanted to investigate what factors influence the entrepreneurial intention of the Chinese university students. Results of statistical analysis show that self-efficacy, personal experiences, supporting activities for venture founding, and social networks have positive effects on entrepreneurial intention of the Chinese university students. These results are similar to the claims of previous studies on the factors that influence the entrepreneurial intention of university students. In the future, researches on the entrepreneurial intention of the Chinese university students should be carried out to reflect the institutional characteristics at the national level.

A Comparative Study on the Dietary Behaviors and Snack Intake between Korean and Chinese College Students (한국 대학생과 중국 대학생의 식행동 및 간식 섭취 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the dietary behaviors and snack intake between Korean and Chinese university students. The total number of participants was 520, with 267 Korean college students in Seoul and 253 Chinese college students in Shandong Province. According to the results, the most frequent place of residence was their own house for Korean students and the dormitory for Chinese students. As for healthy life behavior, Chinese university students as compared to Korean students showed a higher tendency of exercising, and lower levels of drinking, smoking, and caffeine intake. The frequency of snack intake was about 1 to 3 times a week for both Korean and Chinese college students, and the frequency of night eating was higher among Korean students than among Chinese students. The overall dietary evaluation score was higher for Chinese students than for Korean students. This study compared the overall eating habits of Korean and Chinese college students and tried to provide useful basic data for the development of educational programs that can form desirable eating habits for the health of college students in both countries.

  • Currently Internet shopping (or shopping online) is becoming the common consumption channel for Chinese, and it is more likely to continue to grow. Although E-tailers (or the Internet shopping mall) in China is rapidly growing, there are not very many shopping malls that can meet customer satisfaction. E-tailers in Korea analyze the quality evaluation and customer satisfaction of shopping malls. If the Internet shopping that is suitable for Chinese students studying in Korea is built, it is expected to strengthen international competitive power. In this paper, the comparative analysis of Customer satisfaction for Internet shopping between Chinese students studying in Korea and Korean university students is provided. Furthermore, we analyze the customer satisfaction model of Chinese students studying in Korea by using the multi lease square support vector machine that obtains the global optimal solution. Analysis of customer satisfaction of Chinese students studying in Korea are not only used for E-tailers in Korea, but it can strengthen international competitive power.

A Study of Dietary Life Related Factor according to the Acculturation Degree on Chinese Students in Korea (재한 중국인 유학생의 문화적응 정도에 따른 식생활 관련 요인 분석)

  • This study was performed to provide fundamental data on the dietary life according to the acculturation degree. The subject was 305 Chinese students in South Korea region. The questionnaire respondents are consisted of 148 male students (48.5%) and 157 female students (51.5%). There was a statistically significant difference in age, education level, residence time, and Korean language ability according to acculturation degree (p<0.05), but there was no statistically significant difference in gender, residence pattern, purpose of coming to Korea. There was a statistically significant difference between meals frequency, outside frequency, and the intake of Chinese food according to acculturation degree (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference in snake taking frequency (p>0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in drinks and computer time according to acculturation degree (p<0.05), but there was no statistically significant difference between smoking and exercise (p>0.05). The food intake style of Chinese students was 2.47 in noodles, 2.34 in lunches and 2.15 in breads. According to the acculturation degree, the food intake patterns showed statistically significant differences in dumping kind, congee, hamburger and pizza, while meat products, smoked meat, noodle, lunch, cereal, kimbap, sandwich. And there was no significant difference. The correlation between the factors influencing the acculturation degree of Chinese students showed a statistically significant effect on dietary habits, food intake, education level, residence period, and Korean language ability.

A Fusion Program of Tea Ceremony and Applications to Reduce the Cultural Adaptation Stress of Chinese Students in Korea (중국 유학생의 문화적응 스트레스 감소를 위한 참나다례와 앱의 융합 프로그램)

  • Recently, at university, the number of international students from China is increasing, and we want to improve their adaptation to college life, In this research, we applied a fusion program of the tea ceremony to respect and to enhance true self through tea culture for Chinese students and seeing the tea ceremony application in Chinese. The targeting 10 international students in T University of P City have participated directly to the tea ceremony experience program once a week for 4 sessions, and watching the tea ceremony app twice or more everyday for 30 days. As the result, the average stress score of cultural adaptation of Chinese students before participating in the program was 98.5 (SD 9.63), and after participating in the program that was 93.9 (SD 9.67). And it was confirmed that the stress score level of cultural adaptation before and after participation in the program was significantly different (Z=6.702***, P=.000). Therefore, this program can be effective to reduce the cultural adaptation stress to Chinese students.

Predictors of Acculturative Stress among Chinese Students in Korea (국내 중국 유학생의 문화적응 스트레스 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of acculturative stress among Chinese students in Korea. Methods: Between October and December 2009, two hundred one Chinese students from three universities located in Cungnam province, were included in the current study using a questionnaire survey. Data analysis was done using SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: The average score of acculturative stress was $38.50{\pm}6.97$. There were significant differences in acculturative stress according to educational level, economic status, type of residence, speaking skill in Korean, listening skill in Korean, grade point average, satisfaction for studying abroad, and perceived health status. The acculturative stress was significantly correlated with depression, resilience and social support. The strongest predictor of acculturative stress among Chinese students was depression. Conclusions: The findings suggest that developing programs to improve psychological health may provide a buffer against acculturative stress experienced by migrating Chinese students. Furthermore, more studies are needed to explore variables that influence on the international students' acculturation in Korea.
