  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the choice behavior of the mode of transportation for travel from Korea to China. Discrete choice analysis is utilized to establish the factors that affect travelers' choice and to quantify the importance of these factors in transportation mode choices. The proposed choice models were constructed by using stated-preference (SP) data obtained from Chungcheongnam-do. This study also examined different choice behavior in order to capture any previously unobserved differences in the residence area. Results showed that the access time and frequency attributes are the most significant factors, while the travel time attributes are the least significant factors for travelers' choice behaviour. The insights of the results described in this research provide some practical suggestions to transportation providers for planning and strategic management endeavors in the future.

  • This research addresses the prospect of international intermodal transport in North-East Asia and studies the necessity of an agreement in transit transport in the region. Due to the division of labour among countries in the region and the globalization of firm's activities, international intermodal transport has been actively developed and is expected to grow continually. In order to lead the operation of international intermodal transport in North-East Asia, main players such as China and Russia have strengthened cooperation of regional logistics and made agreements in transit transport with contiguous countries. After analysing the current situation and reviewing prospects of international intermodal transport and transit transport in North-East Asia, this research proposes the requirement of regional agreement of transit transport on the basis of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) for promoting international intermodal transport in North-East Asia.

  • It has been well proved that shiphandling simulators are efficient and useful facilities for training and education of cadets and seafarers. Most of the maritime universities and many maritime training institutes all over the world have installed shiphandling simulators, which play important roles in maritime education and training. However, most of the Shiphandling simulators are standalone facilities with diversities on system architectures, layouts and functions. STCW78/95 requires simulators used for simulator-based training shall be suitable for the selected objectives and training tasks. To ensure the shiphandling simulator facilities meet the requirements of STCW convention and other expanded applications, collaborated research and coordination are needed in development and application of shiphandling simulators. Performance standard should be established for shiphandling simulator systems considering the advanced research needs as well as the needs in education, training, and assessment of competence. Standardizing and exchanging shiphandling mathematical models will improve critical performance of the system. Cooperated research on model course and training assessment approaches will enhance the training standard. In addition, the rapid spread of the internet technology has shown a promising future of application of shiphandling simulators through internet. Research has been carried out on internet based integration of multiple shiphandling simulators. A multi-agent based system, including necessary hardware, has been developed. Collaborated operation of the system can be of benefit in filling the gaps of the technical and operational level and methodology between maritime universities, enhancing mutual understanding of the navigation customs and culture background among cadets and seafarers from different countries, facilitating communication and maritime English training, and extending the functions of shiphandling simulators.

  • It's about time we had to think an alternative to recover out insufficient fishery market caused by IMF locally as well as the fishery agreement on Japan and China. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries have planning the advancing fishery information integrated system for the fishing present condition, marine resource administration and applicability consideration. The fishery information communication system is build up to the raw data & process-network-content. The communication system must be small size, low cost and adapted SSB transceiver, that is using fishery shipping. In this paper We present digital data communication network to exchange information for fishery and safety between fishing ship and coast station in cheeper communication fee using SSB(single Side Band) in HF(High Frequency) band.

  • The recent increase in international car-ferry lines between Korea and Japan as well as China brings needs for proper transportations of special cargo, such as machinery and luxury yacht, etc. International multimodal transport, especially international car ferry through truck-sea-truck system enables to fulfill shippers' needs for "Door to Door Service", of such special goods. However, this international multimodal transport of bulk cargo will cause a possible claim for concealed damages during such transportation. For this reason, this study aims to examine the liability system of the multimodal transport operator as well as to investigate liability for concealed damages theoretically and finally to seek proper measures for them. Futhermore, this paper intends to verify the claims for concealed damages to further the international multimodal transport by car ferries between Korea and Japan.

  • This study measures how Korean shipping policies influence the expansion of the country's merchant fleet using system dynamics. It uses various indexes as factors influencing the gross tonnage of the Korean merchant fleet, such as the Baltic Dry Index, Howe Robinson Container Index, China Containerized Freight Index, and Worldscale Index, as well as the US dollar-Korean won exchange rate, world merchant fleet statistics, and the debt ratio of Korean shipping companies. After establishing the simulation model, the mean absolute percentage error is found to be less than 10%, confirming the accuracy of the model. Therefore, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to measure the influence of the selected shipping policies, including the gross tonnage of vessels registered under the Korean second registry system, loans of publicly owned financial institutions to shipping companies, ship investment fund, and the number of shipping companies participating in the tonnage tax scheme. The sensitivity analysis reveals that the influence of vessel tonnage and loans to shipping companies is the most significant, while that of the number of companies participating in the tonnage tax scheme is minimal.

  • This study analyses the current status of trade in Korean fisheries and competitive power in export to China in the era of actual open-door policy, aiming to figure out problems in distribution Structure of fisheries and suggest directions for further development in this area. Political efforts have been consistently made to change distribution system of our fisheries into low-cost and high-efficiency system, but continuous contradictions occur in actual distribution. In this reality, we need a new perspective to reorganize distribution markets according to real conditions. To improve distribution Structures for fisheries, political focus should be given on reorganization of the entire structure. And to develop political directions for fisheries, we should evaluate its competitive powers and based on the results, we should develop efficient measures to use limited political resources.

  • Underwater archaeology relies heavily on photography and video image recording during surveillances and excavations like ordinary archaeological studies on land. All underwater images suffer poor image quality and distortions due to poor visibility, low contrast and blur, caused by differences in refractive indices of water and air, properties of selected lenses and shapes of viewports. In the Yellow Sea (between mainland China and the Korean peninsula), the visibility underwater is far less than 1 m, typically in the range of 30 cm to 50 cm, on even a clear day, due to very high turbidity. For photographing 1 m x 1 m grids underwater, a very wide view angle (180°) fisheye lens with an 8 mm focal length is intentionally used despite unwanted severe barrel-shaped image distortion, even with a dome port camera housing. It is very difficult to map wide underwater archaeological excavation sites by combining severely distorted images. Development of practical compensation methods for distorted underwater images acquired through the fisheye lens is strongly desired. In this study, the source of image distortion in underwater photography is investigated. We have identified the source of image distortion as the mismatching, in optical axis and focal points, between dome port housing and fisheye lens. A practical image distortion compensation method, using customized image processing software, was explored and verified using archived underwater excavation images for effectiveness in underwater archaeological applications. To minimize unusable area due to severe distortion after distortion compensation, practical underwater photography guidelines are suggested.
