This study explored mediating effects of children's emotional regulation between maternal parenting behaviors and children's aggressive/prosocial behaviors. The participants were 1,187 4th, 5th, 6th grade children and their mothers from two elementary schools in Korea. The Maternal Parenting Behaviors Scale(Kim, 2006), the Emotional Regulation Scale(Lee, 1997), and a peer-nomination measure(Crick, 1995; Crick & Grotpeter, 1995) were used. Collected data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis, Pearson's productive correlation and regression using SPSS(Ver 12.0). Findings revealed that children's self-emotional regulation mediated the effects of mother's physical punishment on children's aggressive behaviors, while children's other-emotional regulation mediated the effect of mother's warm-encouragement, mediation-supervision, and inconsistency on children's prosocial behaviors. In conclusion, children's emotional regulation mediates the effects of maternal parenting behaviors on children's aggressive/prosocial behaviors.
The purpose of this study investigated the effects of personal variables(gender, grade, self-esteem, and depression) and family variables(economical level, marital conflict, and parenting behaviors) on the children's school adjustment(school interest, academic achievement, observance of school regulation, and friend relationship) of children in divorced families. The participants were 165 children in divorced families(73 boys and 92 girls). The results were as follows. First, children's school interest was affected by depression, self-esteem and grade. Second, children's academic achievement was affected by depression and grade. Third, children's observance of school regulation was affected by gender, grade, self-esteem, and parenting behaviors. Fourth, children's friend relationship was affected by depression, parenting behaviors, self-esteem, and gender. Fifth, children's school adjustment was more influenced on children's personal variables than children's family variables.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to present a detailed view of the self-regulation of 5-year-old children based on parental attitudes and consistency. Methods: The research was conducted among 144 pairs of parents (288 people) of 5-year-old children residing in Seoul. Results: The resultsare as follows. First, with regards to self-regulation based on a child'sgenderand mother's parental attitudes, sub-factors such as parental attitudes and parental interaction were found to have significant effects on self-determination. Also, parental attitudes and parental interaction were found to have significant effects on the sub-factors of self-monitoring, such as self-evaluation and self-determination and the sub-factors of self-regulation, such as behavioral inhibition and emotionality. Second, the percentage of parents whose parental attitude was consistent at 58.3%, which is higher than the percentage of parents whose parenting attitude was inconsistent at 41.7%. The results of self-regulation were significantly higher when parental attitudes were consistent than when they were inconsistent. Conclusion/Implications: This research is significant in that it offered a concrete view of parental attitudes and consistency status that affect child's self-regulation.
Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of parents' childhood attachment representations and parenting behavior in developing early childhood self-regulation, a developmental skill. Methods: This research was conducted with 171 preschoolers, 171 parent couples, and 22 teachers of 5-year-old classes in kindergartens and children's houses in Seoul. Results: First, there was significant correlation among parental childhood attachment representations, parenting behavior, and child self-regulation. Second, parental attachment representations and parenting behavior were shown to affect self-monitoring, a subvariable of self-regulation, and were influenced by maternal independence-oriented parenting behavior, maternal attachment representation, and parental attachment representation. As factors affecting self-control, a subvariable of self-regulation, they were influenced by maternal attachment representation, and maternal and paternal affectionate parenting behavior. Lastly, as factors affecting self-control, they were influenced by attachment representation to parents of origin, maternal affectionate parenting behavior, and maternal independence-oriented parenting behavior. Conclusion: This research revealed that parental childhood attachment representations and parenting behavior are important variables affecting the development of self-regulation in preschoolers. This finding can be used as basic data for parent education content to help preschoolers grow healthier and happier and as basic data for a program to improve parent-child attachment.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between children's self-efficacy, parental child-rearing attitude perceived by the child, and creativity. The study subjects were 120 5th and 6th graders at elementary school in Gyeongbuk. The instruments of measurement were question sheets, Self-Efficacy Scale, and Parental child-rearing attitude Scale. For creative thinking tests, the Kim Yong-Chae version of TTCT (Torrance Test of Creative Thinking) was used. The data were analysed through mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentile, Cronbach's $\alpha$, and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, the results from the correlational analysis didn't yield significant and meaningful correlations between children's self-efficacy and thinking creatively with words. Nevertheless, children's self-efficacy was partly related to thinking creatively with pictures. Second, the results from the correlational analysis didn't yield significant and meaningful correlations between warmth vs. rejection altitude of father and thinking creatively with words. Warmth vs. rejection attitudes of father was not related to thinking creatively with pictures. However, the results from the correlational analysis yielded a number of significant and meaningful correlations between self-control vs. regulation attitudes of father and the thinking creatively with words. The self-control vs. regulation attitudes of father was significantly positively related to the thinking creatively with pictures. Third, the warmth vs. rejection attitudes of mother was significantly positively related to the thinking creatively with words. However the warmth vs. rejection attitudes of mother was not related significantly to the thinking creatively with pictures. The self-control vs. regulation attitudes of mother was not related to the thinking creatively with words. Moreover, self-control vs. regulation attitudes of mother was not related to the thinking creatively with pictures.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between child's self-regulation and stress according to child's sex. The subjects for this study were 380 children of 5-6th grade selected from elementary schools in Busan. Lee, Soon-Kyu's questionnaires(1994) on child's self-regulation and Han, Mi-Hyun's questionnaires(1996) on child's stress were used. Statistical techniques such as Manova, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression, canonical were used. The resets were as follows : (1) According to sex, there were significant differences in child's self-regulation and stress. The girls showed more self-regulation and higher friend-related stress than the boys. The boys showed higher parent-related stress than the girls. (2) Relationships between child's self-regulation and stress showed as follows : The boys who used more impulsive-control perceived lower friend-related stress, lower school-related stress, lower teacher-related stress, and lower surroundings-related stress. And the boys who used more behavioral-control perceived lower school-related stress, lower teacher-related stress, and lower surroundings-related stress. (3) The predicted variable for boy's friend-related stress was impulsive-control. The predicted variables for boy's school-related stress, teacher-related stress and surroundings-related stress were impulsive-control and behavioral-control. (4) Among three dimensions of self-regulation for boy, the effective variables were impulsive-control and behavioral-control. And among six dimensions of stress were surroundings-related stress, school-related stress and friend-related stress. Implications of this study were discussed in terms of child's self-regulation and stress.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of child, day care, and home variables that influence physical and relational aggression of preschool children. The participants were 338 four and five year olds recruited from day care centers. Children's self-regulation, day care experiences and parenting stress were reported by mothers. Children's aggression and the teacher-child relationships were measured by teachers. The results showed that self-regulation was negatively correlated with physical and relational aggression. Years of day care experiences and parenting stress were positively related with physical and relational aggression. Moreover, teacher-child conflicts were positively associated with physical as well as relational aggression.
This study examined if the effect of family functioning on preschoolers' school readiness can be mediated by mothers' affective parenting and preschoolers' self-regulation in the year before children enter elementary school. This study analyzed the 7th year data of panel study of Korean children collected by the Korean Institute of Child Care and Education. Statistical analysis included 1,513 pairs of 6-year-old children and mothers. Descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, structural equation modeling, and bootstrapping analysis were conducted using SPSS 22 and Amos 20. The primary findings were as follows. First, the sub-factors of preschoolers' school readiness composed of children's social and emotional development, approach to learning, cognitive development and general knowledge, and communication were positively correlated with family functioning, mothers' affective parenting, and preschoolers' self-regulation. Second, the result of structural equation modeling showed that the indirect paths from family functioning to preschoolers' school readiness through mothers' affective parenting and preschoolers' self-regulation were significant, while the direct path was insignificant. Third, bootstrapping analysis showed that mothers' affective parenting and preschoolers' self-regulation fully mediated the relationship between family functioning and preschoolers' self-regulation. The findings provide the grounds for families and parents with preschool aged children to implement effective support practices to maintain a functional family system that can promote preschoolers' school readiness.
This purpose of this study was to analyze the variables associated with the ethical consumption behavior of children consumers. This subjects were 431 elementary school students. PASW 18.0 was used for data processing to do frequency analysis, T-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results were as follows. First, children consumers tend to a little higher everyday ethical consumption behavior than others-oriented ethical consumption behavior. Second, as a result of analyzing ethical consumption behavior according to social economic variables, a high tendency of ethical consumption behavior was shown in groups that personality is extrovert and their household economic status is over upper middle class and father's age is higher. Third, the variables affecting ethical consumption behavior of children consumers were self-regulation ability, materialism, altruism, personality tendency, household economic status. Materialism had a negative effect but self-regulation ability, materialism, altruism, personality tendency, and household economic status had a positive effect.
This study examined the effects of perfectionism and cognitive-emotion regulation strategies on the test anxiety. The participants in this study were 423(227 boys, 196 girls) 6th graders recruited from four elementary schools in Seoul, Korea. The participants completed the Test Anxiety Inventory-Korea(Kim, 1991), the Child and Adolescent Perfectionism Scale(CAPS; Flett at al, 2000), and the Cognitive-Emotion Regulation Questionnaire(CERQ; Garnefski, 2001). The results of this study were as follows. First, self-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism were both positively associated with test anxiety. Additionally, the children who used more adaptive cognitive-emotion regulation strategies reported lower test anxiety, whereas the children who used more maladaptive cognitive-emotion regulation strategies reported higher test anxiety. Secondly, there was an interactional effect between self-oriented perfectionism and maladaptive cognitive-emotion regulation strategies on test anxiety. Lastly, socially prescribed perfectionism and cognitive-emotion regulation strategies had a significant effect on children's test anxiety. However, there were no interactional effects observed between socially prescribed perfectionism and cognitive-emotion regulation strategies on test anxiety.
