  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop assessment indicators and to verify the validity and reliability of the developed assessment indicators. Methods: A Delphi survey, focus group interviews, and content verification were conducted in order for experts to develop an evaluation index of the strengths of the day care center. A main survey was conducted on 438 daycare center principals and teachers to test their item quality, validity and reliability. Results: The final assessment indicators consisted of three areas, seven assessment criteria, 19 evaluation factors, 41 assessment items and a five-point rubric rating scale. As for the common strengths indicators, there were three assessment areas, five assessment criteria, 12 assessment elements and 22 assessment items. In regard to the selective strengths indicators, there were 3 assessment areas, 5 assessment criteria, 12 assessment elements and 16 assessment items. Conclusion/Implications: The efforts to confirm the strengths of daycare centers are expected to facilitate the identity building of the daycare center itself and for its organizational members to make a contribution to the qualitative improvement of childcare.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore trends in institutional evaluation research in early childhood education through keyword network analysis. This aims to understand trends in academic discourse on institutional evaluation and gain implications for follow-up research and related policy directions. Methods: A total of 6,629 keywords were extracted from 572 dissertations and journal articles published from January 2006 to October 2023 for the purpose of analyzing and visualizing the frequency and centrality of keywords, as well as the structural properties of keyword networks. The analysis and visualization were conducted using the TEXTOM, UCINET6, and NetDraw programs. Results: First, the number of institutional evaluation studies increased steadily from 2006 to 2010 and then decreased, with a higher frequency of studies on daycare centers compared to kindergartens. Second, the most frequently occurring keyword in the analysis was 'daycare center,' and the highest connection strength was found in the term 'daycare-center-evaluation.' Third, network analysis revealed that key terms for institutional evaluation research included 'evaluation certification,' 'recognition,' 'evaluation indicators,' 'teacher,' 'daycare center,' and 'kindergarten.' In the ego network analysis for each institution, 'parent' emerged as a highly ranked keyword. Conclusion/Implications: This study confirmed the perspectives of previous studies by revealing the structure of core concepts in early childhood education institution evaluation research, and provided implications for follow-up and direction of institution evaluation

  • Objective: The study aimed to develop and validate a tool for assessing daycare center organizational competence and for autonomously managing childcare quality. Methods: Through literature review and expert reviews, items were derived and validated using the Content Validity Index. Data from a survey involving 216 directors and 509 teachers were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS to assess reliability and conduct confirmatory factor analysis. Results: Results revealed a 36-item diagnostic tool across four subcategories: shared values (6 items), training abilities (18 items), environmental support (6 items), and organizational promotion (6 items). A diagnostic tool named S.T.E.P+ was developed, named after the first letters of the four subfactors. Skewness and kurtosis were within normality assumptions. Good fit indices (CFI, TLI) and low SRMR and RMSEA values indicated a satisfactory model fit. Cronbach's α values showed high reliability for all factors. The tool enables autonomous diagnosis of childcare quality. Conclusion/Implications: This tool can effectively autonomously diagnose whether a daycare center is providing quality childcare.

  • Objective: This study aimed to analyze the counseling contents of daycare center teachers by using text mining and semantic network analysis methods to find the necessary support directions for daycare teachers and to improve the quality of child-care. Methods: Five hundred thirteen cases of counseling recorded on the open bulletin board of online counseling (Naver Bands for Nursery Teacher Counseling) were collected, and frequency analysis, centrality solidarity analysis, and machine learning-based topic analysis were conducted using the NetMiner4.3 program. Results: First, 'teacher-to-child ratio' was highest in the frequency. Second, 'colleagues' were all high in all centrality analysis. Third, machine learning-based topical analysis shows that the topics were categorized as subjects about 'childcare and education', 'working environment that supports professional development' and 'working condition', and among them, 'first-time teacher concerns' accounted for 44% of the total counseling content. Conclusion/Implications: This study implied that it is necessary to provide high-quality child-care and education to infants by lowering the 'teacher-to-child ratio', and a systematic program is needed to help improve effective communication skills in interpersonal relationships such as between parents, fellow teachers, and principals. In addition, self-development and efforts to improve teachers expertise should be prioritized in order to improve infant care quality and quality of teachers.

Three questionnaires about the organizational commitment which Allen and Mayer(1990) developed and Son Sobin(2002) revised, organizational loyalty behavior which Jo Bumsang(2004) revised, and working satisfaction which Kim Sunja(2005) developed, and the researcher revised were used for this study. For this study, the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and Pearson correlation. The results were as follows: first, the early childhood teacher's organizational commitment was average, and there was a significant difference according to the teacher's academic background. Second, the early childhood teacher's organizational loyalty was also average, and there were significant differences according to the teacher's age and academic background. Third, the early childhood teacher's working satisfaction was below average level, and there was a significant difference according to the teacher's working hours. Last, the early childhood teacher's organizational commitment, organizational loyalty behavior, and working satisfaction showed the positive relationship. In conclusion, the government and the director of daycare centers should support for the teacher's psychological satisfaction because the early childhood teacher's psychological state is highly related to successful organization of daycare centers.

Particularly, two specific questions were addressed: 1) Were there differences in the perception of community family-friendliness among parents with young children in Seoul provinces? 2) Were there differences in the perception of community family-friendliness among parents with young children, depending on child-care infrastructures in Seoul provinces? Data for this study were drawn from multiple sources. Individual-level indicators were drawn from the survey of 1,246 parents with children under age 6 in Seoul. Community-level indicators were drawn from the 2011 Seoul census data. Frequency, descriptive statistics, GIS mapping, and hierarchical linear model analysis were conducted to examine the perception of community family-friendliness by individual, child-care infrastructures, and the community at large. The major results of the present study are as follows: The perception of parents on community family-friendliness varied across the 25 provinces in Seoul. The perception of community family-friendliness was positively related with the total number of child day-care centers, and the number of infant-toddler child daycare centers. The number of accredited child daycare centers was negatively associated with the perception of community family-friendliness.

  • Subjects were 15 teachers and 143 children at 15 child-care centers in Seoul that varied by quality of care. The Child Care Program Observation Scale(Rhee et at., 2003) was employed to observe the quality of the centers. Information on teachers' participation in play was collected by 20 units of observation for each teacher using a rating scale developed by the author. Children's behaviors were observed with time sampling method in 12 categories of play behaviors based on Social and Cognitive Play Scales(Rubin et al., 1978). Children's play behaviors varied by quality of child-care centers and teachers' participation in play. When child-care quality was high, teachers' participated actively in children's play and children showed developmentally appropriate play behaviors.
