Purpose: In this study a comparison was done of child-rearing attitudes of parents and problem behavior of children as perceived by parents and children. Methods: The participants were 205 fifth and sixth graders living in the city of Gangneung and their parents. The child-rearing attitudes and the problem behavior were assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. Results: The perception scores of the parents and children for total parents child-rearing attitudes were significantly different. There were also significant difference in the subcategories, affectionate-hostile, autonomous-controlling, rational-irrational. The scores for total behaviors problem as well as the sub-categories were all significantly different for the parents and children. Conclusion: As there were differences in perception of child-rearing attitudes of parents and problem behavior of children between parents and their children, nurses should help parents to communicate with their children with affection and respect, and to observe their environment to identify problem behavior.
The purpose of this study was: (1) to examine relationships between social development and day care quality, child-care experience and family characteristics, and (2) to investigate the explainability of those related variables for social development. Subjects for this study were 252 4-year-old children and their mothers from 32 day care centers in Seoul. Harms & Clifford's Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale was used to measure the quality of day care. The main results were as follows: (1) Day care quality, child-care experience and family characteristics were significantly related to social development. (2) Child's gender, months of age, mother's child rearing attitude, the length of child-care experience, overall quality of day care, and group size significantly predicted social development. 33% of the variance of social development was explained by these variables. The relative influence of these variables to the prediction of social development was about the same.
This study examined the relationship between ambivalence of Korean working mothers for children and their future desire for child birth. This study examined multiple-role efficacy as a mediator in the relationship between ambivalence for their children and future desire for child birth by Korean working mothers having more than one pre-school aged child. This study examined the mediation effect of multiple-role efficacy on the relationship between ambivalence and desire for child birth by working mothers. On-line and off-line survey data from 291 Korean working mothers with more than one pre-school aged child was used for this study. Collected data were analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program and descriptive statistics analyses. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping were conducted by AMOS 20.0 program. Results showed that ambivalence for children of working mothers having pre-school aged children had no direct influence on future child birth desire. However, their ambivalence had an indirect influence on future child birth desire through multiple-role efficacy and multiple-role efficacy by working mothers had significant effect on child birth desire. In conclusion, the working mothers' multiple-role efficacy had a mediation influence on the relationship between ambivalence for children and desire of child birth. These results were discussed for designing a policy to counter low birth.

There is domestic Soil Contamination Warning Standard (SCWS) as remediation standard concentration of contaminated soils. No risk should be observed at soil concentration less than SCWS. Therefore, SCWS was evaluated to confirm the risk assessment. Background Concentration of Soil (BGC) and target remediation concentration were also assessed. The results show that Excess Cancer Risk (ECR) of SCWS was the highest in the groundwater intake pathway (Adult: 6.27E-04, Child: 2.81E-04). Total Cancer Risk (TCR) was 7.76E-04 and 4.30E-04 for adult and child, exceeding reference value (10-6). Hazard Quotient (Non-Carcinogenic Risk, HQ) was the highest in the indoor air inhalation pathway (Adult: 3.64E+03, Child: 8.74E+02). Hazard Index (Total Non-Carcinogenic Risk, HI) exceeded reference value 1. ECR of the BGC was the highest in the groundwater intake pathway (Adult: 1.71E-04, Child: 7.67E-05). TCR was 2.12E-04 for adults and 1.17E-04 for children, exceeding the reference value (10-6). HQ was the highest in groundwater intake pathway (Adult: 4.10E-01, Child: 1.84E-01). HI was lower than reference value 1 (Adult: 4.78E-01, Child: 2.50E-01). The heavy metal affecting ECR was Arsenic (As). The remediation-concentration of As was 7.14 mg/kg which is higher than BGC (6.83 mg/kg). TCR of As should be less than reference value (10-6), but it was higher for all of SCWS, BGC and target remediation concentration. Therefore, it is suggested that risk assessment factors should be re-evaluated to fit domestic environmental settings and SCWS should be induced to satisfy the risk assessment.
This study aimed to identify the contributors of extra-curricular activities of preschool children focusing on home environmental factors(financial capital, human capital, and social capital) and maternal belief about factors on academic achievement(child's effort, child's ability, teacher's instruction, and maternal teaching). One hundred and seventy three mothers whose preschool children were attending child-care centers in Seoul and Kyunggi-Do participated in the survey. Kinlaw et al.(2001)'s Importance of Effort/Ability Scale was used to assess the mother's belief about the factors on academic achievement. Stipek et al.(1992)'s Activities Sub-scales was revised to measure a social capital, that is the mother's formal and informal activities providing to their preschool child. Educational level was utilized as human capital and monthly income was considered as financial capital. Also, using open ended questions, the subjects were asked to respond to the numbers of extra-curricula activities their child was presently attending, and when he or she began to attend the extra-curricular activity. The main results are as follows. In general, the mothers provided informal activities to their preschool child more than formal activities. Also, they believed the teacher's instruction is the most important and the child's ability the least important in their child's academic achievement. The number of extra-curricular activities was predicted by mothers' formal activities and their belief on their child's ability. The age of starting extra-curricular activities were explained by mothers' formal activities and their educational level.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the home environment of young children on their language and the quality of peer competence. The current study hypothesized that when the home environment of young children is desirable, the young children would be more likely to develop better language skills, which in turn, predict greater peer competence and lower levels of aggression and withdrawal in the interaction with peers at child care settings. The study used data of 1,802 families who have been participating in the Korean Child Panel Study since 2008. The results revealed that there was a significant relation from both positive home environment and better language skills to more positive play interaction and reduced play disruption and play disconnection. Home environment significantly predicted better expressive language development of young children and, in turn, higher scores on expressive vocabulary tests predicted greater peer competence and less negative play behaviors rated by child care providers. Statistical tests proved that the mediational effects of language skills between home environment and toddler's peer relationships were statistically significant. The study results emphasized the importance of language development in children's expanding social settings and the supporting role of rich and stimulus home environments in children's development.

Since 2008, a communal child care and 'Family Pumasi' program have been conducted as a pilot project for the Healthy Family Support Center. These programs have been positioned as a step toward a family friendly community project. For the Healthy Family Support Centers, a family friendly community project is an essential program as a part of the policies in response to the country's low fertility. However, the people in charge face difficulties, because they do not have much experience in such projects. This study attempted to explore the preferences regarding interior and exterior apartment spaces, and neighborhood environment to provide information about how to better implement a family friendly community program. For this purpose, data were collected from 418 housewives who are apartment dwellers in Daejeon city. The results were as follows; first, the person in charge must consider child care facilities, culture, and sports centers in order to start building a community lifestyle. Second, people with relatively low levels of education and short terms of residence are more deeply motivated by community lifestyle compared to others. Third, families with their first young child showed much interest in communal child care facilities. If the people in charge can motivate and encourage such residents to be engaged in family friendly community projects, the project will effectively progress.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parents' behavior during picture-book reading and home literacy environment and their effects on toddlers' vocabulary. The subjects of the study were 46 toddlers and their parents. The MCDI-K(Im, 2002), Lee and Kim(2004)'s categories of Verbal Behaviors, the categories of Nonverbal Behavioral Analysis(Kim, 2005), and the Home Literacy Environment Index(Han, 2006) were used. The analysis of the collected data was guided by the research questions and involved the use of descriptive statistics, t-test and an analysis of relevant correlations. The results of this study were as follows; First, the toddlers' receptive vocabulary score was 1.2 times higher than the toddler's expressive vocabulary score. Second, the father's book reading behaviors and mother's book reading behaviors were quite similar, the most frequent types of behavior being the use of 'feedback', 'explanation', 'questioning' and 'pointing'. On the other hand, there was a significant difference between the reading behavior of the mother and father as regards the categories of 'linguistic attention ventilation', 'suggesting', 'directing(instructing)', 'expanding feedback', 'pointing' and 'gesture'. Mothers performed more of these behaviors than the fathers. Third, toddler's vocabulary scores were positively correlated with the mother's 'linguistic attention ventilation'. However, the mother's use of 'restriction' was negatively correlated with the toddler's vocabulary level. Toddler's vocabulary scores were positively correlated with the father's 'description', 'reasoning/predicting', 'questioning about function or action', 'demanding feedback' and 'pointing'. The toddler's vocabulary scores were also positively correlated with the relative abundance of home environment materials and the amount of time spent on parent-child home literacy activity.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to distance learning in primary and secondary school. Little has been known whether home ICTs environment is appropriate for the distance learning. This paper aims to assess the current state of ICTs environment at home for the distance learning of children. Using 2012 and 2019 Korean Media Panel Survey, we investigated the number of smart devices owned by households and found differences in ownership by household characteristics. The results showed that the majority of household owned more than one smart devices per child. However, the difference in the proportion of households with less than one device per child varied depending on whether smartphone was included in smart devices. These results imply that public intervention is needed to prevent educational inequality caused by the home ICTs environment for the distance learning.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderate effect of the physical environmental-level between infant teachers' positive play beliefs and teacher-infant interaction. Methods: The subjects of this study were 483 teachers in charge of one-year-old and two-year-old infants in child care centers located in metropolitan areas. The data were collected by asking the teachers to respond to a questionnaire and the data collected were analyzed through correlation and hierarchical multi- regression analysis. Results: First, the positive play beliefs of the infant teacher, the physical environment level, and the teacher-infant interaction showed significant proportional correlations. Second, the physical environment level moderated the influence of the teacher's positive play beliefs on teacher-infant interaction. In particular, results showed that functional interior space configuration, outdoor playground composition and facilities among the sub-variables of the physical environment level had a moderating effect. Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study show that teachers with positive play beliefs have positive teacher-infant interaction when there is sufficient space available for infants and teachers. This indicates that the human and physical environments of child care centers can promote teacher-child interaction.
