  • Chickens at 3-weeks of age were inoculated with a highly virulent strain (SH/92) of Infectious Bursal Disease Virus(IBDV) through ocular and cloacal routes. The infected chickens were killed at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hrs post inoculation (PI) and Bursa of Fabricius(BF) were collected. The sizes of bursal follicules in infected chickens decreased at 48 to 96 hrs PI. Histologically the cellular changes were first evident at 12 hrs PI and characterized by condensation of nuclear chromatin of bursal lymphocytes indicating apoptosis. By 24 hrs PI apoptotic lymphocytes dramatically increased. In addition infiltration of heterophils were also seen in the follicles and in the interfollicular connective tissues. At 48 hrs PI, cystic cavities were observed in the follicles. As the infection advanced the bursal follicles showed atrophy accompanied by disappearance of heterophils and reduction in number of lymphocytes in the cystic cavities which was replaced by proteineous materials. The nuclei of most affected lymphocyte stained positively with the in situ end labeling for apoptosis. Electron microscopy showed viral particles with crystalline array in the lymphocytes of BF infected with IBOV. These results indicated that SH/92 IBDV infection in chickens caused increased apoptosis in the BF.

  • This study was carried out to provide the fundamental information for development of proper vaccination program against infectious bursal disease(IBD) to the local chicken farms. The antigen detection was peformed from 8 samples of bursa of Fabricius with agar gel precipitation(AGP) and indirect immunofluorescent assay(IFA), And also, the antibodies in serum samples were detected by the various serological methods such as commercial ELISA assay, AGP and virus neutralization(VN) test. 1. The antigen detection rates were 25% for AGP which is 2 out of 8 farms and 10 out of 40 bursas, and 25% which Is 2 out of 8 farms and 20% 8 out of 40 bursas for IFA, respectively. 2. The mean titer of maternal antibody (>3,000) existed until 10 days of the age with ELISA-GMT. 3. The antibody positive rates which are over 80% showed until 5 days of the age with ELISA and at 10 days of the age with AGP except one, but none of them showed from 1 day of the age. This report came to conclusions that both the protective maternal antibody titers and the antigen positive rates were significant until at the 10 days of the age.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to understand the health status and health behaviors of preschoolers to provide baseline data for developing health promotion programs. Method: Parents of children attending day-care centers were recruited for the study. Participating day-care centers were selected using a stratified sampling method. Data was collected from June to August 2002 using a questionnaire. Result: Among 754 preschoolers, 17.3% were overweight, while 18.2% were underweight. The most frequent infectious diseases that children have had previously were hand-foot-mouth disease (20.2%) and chicken pox (18.7%). Current health conditions that children have frequently are respiratory disease (28%) and atopic dermatitis (23.8%). Only 61% brush their teeth everyday at bedtime, 54.3% wash their hands every time after returning home, 8.8% wear bicycle helmets, 9.3% use a child car seat, and 8.1% eat fruits and vegetables five times a day. Children residing in the metropolitan area were more likely to have positive health behaviors, and children of parents with an advanced college level education were more likely to have positive health behaviors than those with only a high school level education. Conclusion: Based on the study results, health professionals could plan and develop health promotion programs to change unhealthy behaviors of preschoolers targeting high-risk groups.

  • Many viruses can infect different types of birds, with poultry being the most susceptible. These viral diseases have a direct negative impact on the poultry industry, with significant economic losses. This study examined a group of the most important viruses that infect backyard chickens in 2 specific areas of Basrah Governorate, south of Iraq. The study analyzed avian influenza viruses (AIVs), Newcastle disease virus (NDV), and infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Two hundred and ninety oropharyngeal swabs, 150 from Abu Al-Khasib and 140 from Shatt Al-Arab regions in the Basrah governorate, were obtained from backyard chickens with clear respiratory signs. The samples were subjected to viral RNA extraction, and the viral nucleic acids were detected using a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction technique. The overall rate of viral infections was 74.8%, which varied depending on the type of virus: 15.8%, 31.3%, and 27.5% for AIV, NDV, and IBV, respectively. The NDV and IBV had much higher infection rates than that of AIV. In addition, the prevalence of AIV in the Shatt Al Arab district was significantly higher than in the Abul Khasib district. Moreover, there were no significant differences between the NDV and the IBV distributions in either of the targeted regions in this study.

  • Since the development of the first genetically-modified mouse, transgenic animals have been utilized for a wide range of industrial applications as well as basic research. To date, these transgenic animals have been used in functional genomics studies, disease models, and therapeutic protein production. Recent advances in genome modification techniques such zinc finger nuclease (ZFN), transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALEN), and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRIPSR)-Cas9, have led to rapid advancement in the generation of genome-tailored livestock, as well as experimental animals; however, the development of genome-edited poultry has shown considerably slower progress compared to that seen in mammals. Here, we will focus primarily on the technical strategies for production of transgenic and gene-edited chickens, and their potential for future applications.

  • ;The Varicella zoster virus can cause two infectious diseases. The primary infection of this virus leads to Chicken pox and it goes into a latent period until it reveals itself again. When secondarily shown. it is called Herpes Zoster. Herpes Zoster can usually be seen between T-3 and L-2 of immunodepressant patients but in 13%. it is seen in the trigeminal nerve branch. During the predrominal stage. burning sensation, itching. and sharp pain can be experienced unilaterally where the nerve branch is distributed. Patients can also express tooth pain in this stage. After 2-4 days the acute stage begins with its characteristic unilateral macule showing vesicle formation. In this stage fever and fatigue can be experienced. Continuous pain even after the acute stage is called postherpetic neuralgia; deep pain and burning sensation can be expressed by the patient. The sequelae of this disease consists of rare osteomyelitis. necrosis of the jaws. or loss of teeth.teeth.

  • Avian reoviruses have been implicated in respiratory disease enteric conditions including Cloacal pasting in young thicks, pericarditis, hydropericardium, anaemia with swollen spleen and liver and petechiation of skeletal muscle and viral arthritis. This study was conducted to examine properties of reovirus field 3 strains isolated from affected broiler from several farms. An infectious agent was isolated from leg tendons and intestine of broiler with clinical tenosynovitis. The agent grew well on the chicken embryo kideny cells(CEK). One of them produced cytopathic effects(CPE) of round type and formed intranuclear inclusions, and the other was characterized by CPE of syncytical type and cytoplasmic inclusion. The properties and serological classification of field strains were examined by hemagglutin test, virus neutralization test, agar gel precipitin, electropherotype. They showed no hemagglutination reactions and not well neutralization and to possess common antigens detectable by AGP test. RNA electropherotype presented 10 segment band as the previous report. These data suggest that the field strains and standard strains (1133, 1733) may be the same group.

  • Histomonas meleagridis is a facultative anaerobic parasite, which can cause a common poultry disease known as histomoniasis. The species and age of the birds impacts on the susceptibility, with turkey being the most susceptible species. Chickens are less susceptible to H. meleagridis than turkeys and usually serve as reservoir hosts. Here, the diagnosis of an outbreak of histomoniasis in backyard Sanhuang chickens is described. The primary diagnosis was made based on clinical symptoms, general changes at necropsy, histopathology, and the isolation and cultivation of parasites. The pathogen was further confirmed by cloning, PCR identification, and animal inoculation tests. A strain of H. meleagridis, named HM-JSYZ-C, with a higher pathogenicity level in chickens was obtained. The study lays a foundation for further investigations into H. meleagridis and histomoniasis in chickens.
