  • N-type porous silicon (PS) layers and thermally oxidized PS layers have been characterized by various measuring techniques such as photoluminescence (PL), Raman spectroscopy, IR, HRSEM and transmittance measurements. The top surface of PS layer shows a stronger photoluminescence peak than its bottom part, and this is ascribed to the difference in number of fine silicon particles of 2~3 nm in diameter. Observed characteristics of PL spectra are explained in terms of microstructures in the n-type PS layers. Common features for both p-type and n-type PS layers are as follows: the parts which can emit visible photoluminescence are not amorphous, but crystalline, and such parts are composed of nanocrystallites of several nm's whose orientations are slightly different from Si substrate, and such fine silicon particles absorb much hydrogen atoms near the surfaces. Light emission is strongly dependent on such fine silicon particles. Photoluminescence is due to charge carrier confinement in such three dimensional structure (sponge-like structure). Characteristics of visible light emission from n-type PS can be explained in terms of modification of band structure accompanied by bandgap widening and localized levels in bandstructure. It is also shown that hydrogen and oxygen atoms existing on residual silicon parts play an important role on emission stability.

  • Bio-oil is produced by the fast quenching of hot vapor produced by fast pyrolysis of biomass in an inert atmosphere. Nitrogen is used as carrier gas to control the concentration of oxygen less than 3%. The consumption of nitrogen should be increased with increasing process size, and leading to increasing of facility and operating costs due to nitrogen charge. The effects of the recycling of non-condensable gases on the fast pyrolysis, bio-oil yield and quality, and nitrogen consumption have systematically investigated to see the possibility of these results in fast pyrolysis process of palm residue.

  • In this study, we have investigated the effect of the substrate temperature and hydrogen flow rate on the characteristics of IGZO thin films for the TCO(transparent conducting oxide). For this purpose, IGZO thin films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering at room temperature and $300^{\circ}C$ with various $H_2$ flow rate. In order to investigate the influences of the hydrogen, the flow rate of hydrogen in argon mixing gas has been changed from 0.1sccm to 1.0sccm. IGZO thin films deposited at room temperature show amorphous structure, whereas IGZO thin films deposited at $300^{\circ}C$ show crystalline structure having an (222) preferential orientation. The electrical resistivity of the amorphous-IGZO films deposited at R.T. was lower than that of the crystalline-IGZO thin films deposited at $300^{\circ}C$. The increase of electrical resistivity with increasing substrate temperature was interpreted in terms of the decrease of the charge carrier mobility. The transmittance of the IGZO films deposited at $300^{\circ}C$ was decreased deposited with hydrogen gas.

  • This study deals with the optimal design of mobile access network connecting base stations(BSs) and mobile switching centers(MSCs). Generally mobile operators constitute their access networks by leasing communication lines. Using the characteristic of leased line rate based on administration region, we build an optimization model for mobile access network design which has much smaller number of variables than the existing researches. And we develop a GUI based optimization tool integrating the well-known softwares such as MS EXCEL. MS VisualBasic, MS PowerPoint and Ip_solve, a freeware optimization software. Employing the current access network configuration of a Korean mobile carrier, this study using the optimization tool obtain an optimal solution for both single MSC access network and nation-wide access network. Each optimal access network achieves 7.45% and 9.49% save of lease rate, respectively. Considering the monthly charge and total amount of lease line rate, our optimization tool provides big amount of save in network operation cost. Besides the graphical representation of access networks makes the operator easily understand and compare current and optimal access networks.

  • In this study, 3-dimensional ripple structured anion (chlorine) doped ZnO thin film are developed, and used as electron transporting layer (ETL) in inverted organic photovoltaics (I-OPVs). Optical and electrical characteristics of ZnO:Cl ETL are investigated depending on the chlorine doping ratio and optimized for high efficient I-OPV. It is found that optimized chlorine doping on ZnO ETL enhances the ability of charge transport by modifying the band edge position and carrier mobility without decreasing the optical transmittance in the visible region, results in improvement of power conversion efficiency of I-OPV. The highest performance of 8.79 % is achieved for I-OPV with ZnO:Cl-x (x=0.5wt%), enhanced ~10% compared to that of ZnO:Cl-x (x=0wt%).

  • We have measured the x-ray photoemission spectroscopy of cation deficient La0.970Mn0.970O3 as a function of temperature. Detailed results on the chemical shifts and changes in Mn 2p and Lp 3d core levels due to variation of temperature have been obtained. The Mn 2p 3/2 and 1/2 main peaks and La 3d core spectrum shift to lower binding energy levels with increasing temperature. This XPS behavior is correlated with the strength of localization of Mn3+. The Jahn-Teller effect due to Mn3+ besides the conventional random potential effects is likely to localize charge carriers in La-.970Mn0.970O3.

  • Human plasma low density lipoprotein(LDL) is the main carrier for cholesterol, and recent studies suggest the normal LDL can be readily oxidized by free radical and not interact with LDL receptor. Lipoprotein pariticles are consisted of lipid andprotein, and fatty acids of lipoproteins are prone to oxidation. LDL particles readily undergo oxidative modification by copper. From the results, oxidized LDL altered its biological properties. A marked increase in the electrophoretic mobility of LDl on agarose gel indicated that negative surface charge of the LDL particles was increased. Also, the results from the HPLC showed that oxidized LDL was degraded into several polypeptides nonenzymatically. Degradation tests which measured the amount of 5-IAF labelled oxidized LDL were carried out by monocyte and hepatocyte cell culture. Hepatocyte cell culture of modified LDL did not show consistent pattern. However, binding rate of modified LDL with HMDM(human monocyte derived macrophage) was enhanced with oxidation, but was retarded by addition of antioxidants(hyaluronic acid, vitamin A, vitamin E). Also comparisons of oxidized-LDL, acetyl-LDL and MDA-LDL showed significant differences in the chemical properteis and binding affinity to HMDM. Thus, modificaition of normal LDL altered its biological properties.

  • We have determined the electronic energy level alignment at the interface between 4,4'-bis-N-phenyl-1-naphthylamino biphenyl (NPB) and 1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylenehexacarbonitrile (HAT-CN) using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). The highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of 20 nm thick HAT-CN film was located at 3.8 eV below the Fermi level. Thus the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is very close to the Fermi level. The HOMO position of NPB was only about 0.3 eV below Fermi level at NPB/HAT-CN interface. This enables an easy excitation of electrons from the NPB HOMO to the HAT-CN LUMO, creating electron-hole pairs across this organic-organic interface. We also study the interaction of HAT-CN with a few metallic surfaces including Ca, Cu, and ITO using UPS and ab-inito electronic structure calculation techniques.

  • Pulverized coal (PC) has become an important auxiliary fuel in the iron and steel industry since the technique of pulverized coal injection (PCI) was developed for iron making. The combustion efficiencies of pulverized coal in blowpipes and tuyeres under various operational conditions are numerically predicted to determine the performance levels with regard to different locations of the nozzles in a blast furnace. A variety of parameters, including the pulverized coal quantities, oxygen amounts, inlet temperatures of the tuyeres, and the mass flow rate of coal carrier gas are taken into consideration. Also, in order to develop greater efficiency than those of existing coal injection systems, this study applies a flame measurement system using a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera and a frame grabber. It uses auto sampling algorithms from the flame shape information to determine the device for the optimal location control for PCI. This study finds further improvements of the blast furnace performance via the control of the PCI locations.
