Case Study of Character Make-up for Stages - With a focus on the drama, Madwoman of Chaillot (La Folle de Chaillot) - (무대에 적용되는 성격분장에 관한 사례연구 - 연극 <샤이오의 광녀>를 중심으로 -)

  • The audience of the performing arts enacted on the stage appreciate acting of the characters in a play to understand its plot, identify with the characters, and comprehend the message and subject matters of the play. Stage make-up in particular should assist audience in comprehending the story without overpowering or distracting the script. Stage make-up is a crucial means to visualize occupation, class, personality, and age of the characters. Thus it is an essential means in producing a high quality performance. The aim of the study is to examine character-emphasis make-up for a play by reviewing theories on the concepts and methods of the stage make-up. The methodology of the study was to analyze character make-up of the adopted play The Madwoman of Chaillot (La Folle de Chaillot) translated from the original French, as a case study. The technique and features of the character make-up of the play were examined, and functions of each factor of the character make-up depending on a role were also examined. The results of the study are as follows. The stage make-up for creating and expressing a distinctive personality of the characters in a play must integrate environmental factors external to a performance such as lighting and scale of a venue. Moreover the stage make-up must adopt and reconstruct internal factors of the play such as interpretation of the original work, subject matters, interpretation of the script, character analysis based on the discussion with a director, and design setting.

Variations of AlexNet and GoogLeNet to Improve Korean Character Recognition Performance

  • Deep learning using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is being studied in various fields of image recognition and these studies show excellent performance. In this paper, we compare the performance of CNN architectures, KCR-AlexNet and KCR-GoogLeNet. The experimental data used in this paper is obtained from PHD08, a large-scale Korean character database. It has 2,187 samples of each Korean character with 2,350 Korean character classes for a total of 5,139,450 data samples. In the training results, KCR-AlexNet showed an accuracy of over 98% for the top-1 test and KCR-GoogLeNet showed an accuracy of over 99% for the top-1 test after the final training iteration. We made an additional Korean character dataset with fonts that were not in PHD08 to compare the classification success rate with commercial optical character recognition (OCR) programs and ensure the objectivity of the experiment. While the commercial OCR programs showed 66.95% to 83.16% classification success rates, KCR-AlexNet and KCR-GoogLeNet showed average classification success rates of 90.12% and 89.14%, respectively, which are higher than the commercial OCR programs' rates. Considering the time factor, KCR-AlexNet was faster than KCR-GoogLeNet when they were trained using PHD08; otherwise, KCR-GoogLeNet had a faster classification speed.

  • The costume in musical is an important visual factor that contributes to the level of stage completion by for the character and overall atmosphere of the whole play. Besides, as if it is has a fixed times in the drama, it has to produce to consider an opinion of producer to express the theme, atmosphere of a play and especially in the period adventure drama, to revive as it is historical dress, there is not creation at stage of today. This research is studied into the stage costume of the musical 'Jekyll and Hyde' an adapted to express image of good and evil in the one character. For this research, it researched costume of Victoria period in England, study character of main actor by analysis of the play in an original work, examine the stage costume of the musical 'Jekyll and Hyde' performed in the inside and outside of the country. In the musical stage costume, by character difficult of stage costume, factor of design feature divided to good and evil and compare feature design of stage costume, research new design express method to consider musical acting, moreover through designing and producing the costume to be suitable for the content of the work. This research consists of research and actual production of work, study of documentary records, collection and analysis of overseas performances, news releases, video material and internet research were the methods of this study.

A Study on the Visual Character and Preference of Roadscape -In Case of the Main Entrance Road in Chongju- (도로경관의 시각적 특성 및 선호도에 관한 연구 -청주시 주진입로를 대상으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to figure out visual character and preference of roadscape for the main entrance road in Chongju. We took 9.6km which was from the Chongju interchange of Kyungbu expressway to Sangdang park and was thought to have a peculiar characteristics. This main entrance road was seperated into 4 parts according to arranging patterns of roadside trees and buildings. To investigate the visual characters, the sementic differential scale experiment was used. The visual characters, the sementic differential scale experiment was used. The visual preference was examined by analyzing visual volume of 4 factors. The results of the study based on these analyses were as below : 1. Factors that compose the visual characters of roadscape were classified by the emotional factor, the individual factor and the physical factor. These 3 factors showed a64.14% total variance. Among 3 factors the emotional factor which represented psychological reaction was appreciated to be the highest and the physical factor was assessed to be the lowest. 2. 24 items in total 14 adjectives showed the following ranking of mean values in sementic differential experiment : Road I -->RoadIII-->RoadII-->RoadIV. The mean values between Road I and RoadIV showed a significant difference, which can be explained to be a contrast between the natural factor and the artificial factor. 3. The mean value of the visual preference was the highest at Road I and the lowest at Road IV. While Road II and Road III showed 3.51 and 4.71, respectively. 4. The effect of 4 factors on visual preference was analyzed by regression as follows : Visual preference =1.2983+0.0627 + 0.0230+0.0203, R-Square=0.5

An Efficient Character Recognition Algorithm in Printed Korean/English Documents Including Touching Characters (붙은 글자들이 포함된 인쇄체 한.영 혼용 문서에서의 효과적인 문자 인식 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we present a character recognition algorithm in printed korean and english documents including touching characters. We derived two rules to segment and recognize touching characters in the bilingual documents, one from the shape characteristics of korean and english characters of the writing blocks defined in this paper, and the other from the RF (reliability factor) values generated from the classifiers. Overall classification accuracy for the KITE paper of the proposed algorithm was about 96.8% for the english abstract, and about 97.8% for the bilingual parts. Also we confirmed the proposed algorithm significantly improves the accuracy of character segmentation of the actual mixed korean and english documents including touching characters.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze trade environment and examine a commercial practices for a successful launching of Indian market In general, Indian trade environment is composed of a natural environment, religious peculiarity, history and politic and economic prospect. In order to understand Indian commercial practices and secure business achievements, its national character, mode of living, customs related to foods and social relations such as exchange of gifts, religious taboos, tendency of product preference should be recognized. The results of the study indicate mostly that even though an excellent brand image, a good quality and an efficient sales network are a basic factor for making of a successful business, practically it is more important to understand a business customs and national character of indian people. Because business is accomplished through relationship between human beings eventually.

  • Neural Oscillator can be applied to oscillatory systems such as the image recognition, the voice recognition, estimate of the weather fluctuation and analysis of geological fluctuation etc in nature and principally, it is used often to pattern recoglition of image information. Conventional BPL(Back-Propagation Learning) and MLNN(Multi Layer Neural Network) are not proper for oscillatory systems because these algorithm complicate Learning structure, have tedious procedures and sluggish convergence problem. However, these problems can be easily solved by using a synchrony characteristic of neural oscillator with PLL(phase-Locked Loop) function and by using a simple Hebbian learning rule.   • Animation is a field of popular visual art that is established in human life, and the form of characters appearing is an important factor that is highly anticipated by the public. Designing animation characters according to aesthetic characteristics not only satisfies people's aesthetic needs but can also increase their artistic immersion in animation works. In addition, animation storytelling is delivered around characters and enhances the value of the work by encouraging more public to focus on it. In this paper, we tried to analyze the design elements of Minions characters to derive the reason why they are loved by the public. Among the morphological characteristics of bicepsin characters, a study was conducted on the fact that bicepsin characters visually express 'cute' through the study of infantile eating and color. The visual cuteness elements of a bisung character will soon be linked to the psychological satisfaction of the audience's work and will be a factor in the appreciation of the value of the work. By studying the elements of expression that represent isosin characters, I would like to discuss the factors that help the audience to immerse and get satisfaction with the characters. This will be used as an important factor for an animation character to have for the audience and will reveal its value. Second-class animation images belong to the art of small pieces, suitable for all the audience to enjoy. The two-size animated image has a strong appeal and entertainment, is a confusing visual attribute, can stimulate the audience's five senses. Compared with the actors in the movie, the visual form of the animation is more important.
