  • By employing the nonlocal continuum field theory of Eringen and Von Karman nonlinear strains, this paper presents an analytical model for linear and nonlinear dynamics analysis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) conveying fluid with different boundary conditions. In the linear analysis the natural frequencies and critical flow velocities of SWNTs are computed. However, in the nonlinear analysis the effect of nonlocal parameter on nonlinear dynamics of cantilevered SWNTs conveying fluid is investigated by using bifurcation diagram, phase plane and Poincare map. Numerical results confirm existence of chaos as well as a period-doubling transition to chaos.

  • On this thesis, the focus is that studying costumes which have been affected by deconstructionism that is based on chaos and fractal the-ory. Chaos and fractal theory is accepted as a new paradigm for open world which is changing very vast and fast. And this theory is needed for artists and designers who should have spacetime conciousness and open mind and attitude towark open world. In the results, various costume typess of deconstructionism have been shown by fashion designers and artists' works. Thoes are as follows; 1. normal relationship of costume changes to abnormal relationship 2. three-dimentional structure of costume changes to two-dimentional structure. 3. open to materials and techniques. 4. separated costume parts reconstruct as ambiguous whole on function. 5. body absence and accessorizing.

  • As we approach the end of the twentieth century, it seems we need a new way to express the thoughts, needs, and values that are undergoing a drastic change and a new strategy to create diverse cultural forms that would reflect and incorporate such changes. In this study, I am introducing the chaos theory as a new way of thinking that would help counterbalancing the deter-ministic world-view and forging a harmonious unity of man and his environment. As a creative principle, the theory seems to offer an unlimited number of structural possibilities for art and design. In fine, this study discuss-es the reductive nature of modernist approach and offer instead the chaos theory that is more probabilistic and capable of greater diversity.

  • In the steady-state simulation, it is important to identify initialization bias for the correct estimates of the simulation model under study. In this paper, the methods from chaos theory are applied to the determination of truncation points in the simulation data for controlling the initial bias. Two methods are proposed and evaluated based on their effectiveness for estimation the average waiting time in M/M/1($\infty$) queueing model.

  • This paper proposes a sequential procedure which can be used to determine a truncation point and run length to reduce or remove bias owing to artificial startup conditions in simulations aimed at estimating steady-state behavior. It is based on the idea of Lyapunov exponent in chaos theory. The performance measures considered are relative bias, coverage, estimated relative half-width of the confidence interval, and mean amount of deleted data.

  • Chua's circuit is a simple electronic network which exhibits a variety of bifurcation and attractors. The circuit consists of two capacitors, an inductor, a linear resistor, and a nonlinear resistor. In this paper, a transmitter and a receiver using two identical Chua's circuits are proposed and a synchronizations of lossless transmission line are investigated. Since the synchronization of the transmission system is impossible by coupled synchronization, the drive-response synchronization theory were used. As a result, the chaos synchronization has delay characteristics in the lossless transmission system caused by the line parameters L and C.

  • In his 1993 stage play, Arcadia, Tom Stoppard appropriates scientific theories to dramatize the difficulty in predicting the future and in describing the past. Arcadia tracks the archaeological efforts of two present-day literary critics, Hannah Jarvis and Bernard Nightingale, as they attempt to piece together the events that occurred at a large country house called Sidley Park, from 1809 to 1812. While employing a variety of historical and cultural references to the changes taking place in British landscape gardening around the early nineteenth century, the play also turns around the intuitive-romantic versus rational-classical dichotomy represented by Hannah, and present in its discussion of science and the recoverable/irrecoverable past. Stoppard's use of chaos theory as a metaphor for the difficulties faced by those involved in biographical/bibliographical literary research suggests that unsubstantiated assumption can result in the construction of its subject, rather than in its recovery. This paper explores the way in which Stoppard uses scientific concepts, particularly the chaos theory, as a metaphor for human life and behaviour, and how he successfully describes the dilemmas and contradictions of life in so doing. Influences from his famous British predecessors, George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde, are evident, but Stoppard transcends both playwrights and crafts a dramatic style distinctively his own. The combination of wit, comedy, intellectual depth, intriguing ideas, literary allusions, scientific concepts, metaphors, and cultural references, all combine to make Arcadia a dramatic edifice that will stand the test of time.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand mechanisms of scientific discovery and how this can help students, as young scientists, to understand scientific ideas in the science classroom. To unravel this mechanism, this study employed the notion of chaos. This phenomena was rediscovered by Edward Lorenz. In this paper, the general concept of chaos was briefly discussed in relation with previous scientific theories such as Newtonian physics and quantum mechanics. Following this, discovery constraints in terms of available technology at the time was described. In addition, Lorenz's psychological processes during the discovery was also discussed. Based on analysis, major implications for the field of science education were the provision of relevant schemata, the use of cognitive tools, the presentation of problems with various representational forms, and the sharing of ideas with others.

  • Based on the chaos theory, a new method of presentation of speech signal has been presented in this paper. This new method can be used for pattern matching such as speaker recognition. The expressions of attractors are represented very well by the logistic maps that show the chaos phenomena. In the speaker recognition field, a speaker's vocal habit could be a very important matching parameter. The attractor configuration using change value of speech signal can be utilized to analyze the influence of voice undulations at a point on the vocal loudness scale to the next point. The attractors arranged by the method could be used in research fields of speech recognition because the attractors also contain unique information for each speaker.
