  • In this paper, the ZnS nanoparticles were synthesized according to the process conditions of hydrothermal synthesis. When the molar ratio of Zn to S was 1:1.2, it was confirmed that it had a cubic single phase and a high crystal phase. After the molar ratio is fixed, hydrothermal synthesis was conducted at $180^{\circ}C$ for 24, 36, 72 and 96 h in order to confirm the structural change with the change of hydrothermal synthesis times. As the hydrothermal synthesis times increased, the particle size increased. The hydrothermal synthesized particle size for 72 h was considered to be suitable for sintering. The ZnS ceramic had a density of 99.7% and an excellent transmittance of ~70% in the long-wavelength region.

  • Silicon nitride samples with aligned whisker seeds were prepared with different amounts of yttria and alumina as the sintering additives. Their sintering behaviors and the microstructural developments between 2123K and 2323K were examined. The sample with larger amount of the sintering additives showed faster densification and grain growth. Even though addition of the aligned whisker seeds slightly retarded densification of silicon nitride, it improved the flexural strength and the fracture toughness. Both the flexural strength and the fracture toughness of silicon nitride with the aligned whisker seeds were increased as the amount of the sintering additives was increased.

  • Graphite is widely used in electronic industry due to its excellent electrical and thermal properties. However, graphite starts to oxidize around $400^{\circ}C$ that seriously degrades its properties. SiC coating can be applied to graphite foam to improve its high temperature oxidation resistance. In this research, SiC coating on graphite foam was made via preceramic polymer using a polyphenylcarbosilane. 20% of polyphenylcarbosilane in hexane solution was coated onto graphite by dip coating method. Thermal oxidation was carried out at $200^{\circ}C$ for crosslink of the preceramic polymer and the sample were pyrolysized at $800^{\circ}C{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen to convert the preceramic polymer to SiC film. The microstructure of the SiC coating after pyrolysis was investigated using FESEM and oxidation resistance up to $800^{\circ}C$ was evaluated.

  • Ceramic thin films are key materials for fundamental electronic devices such as transistors and capacitors which are highly important for the state-of-the-art electronic products. Their characteristic dielectric properties enable accurate control of current conduction through channel of transistors and stored charges in capacitor electrodes. The electronic conduction in ceramic thin films is one of the most important part to understand the electrical properties of electronic device based on ceramic thin films. There have been numerous papers dealing with the electronic conduction mechanisms in emerging ceramic thin films for future electronic devices, but these studies have been rarely reviewed. Another interesting electrical characterization technique is one based on electrical pulses and following transient responses, which can be used to examine physical and chemical changes in ceramic thin films. In this review, studies on various conduction mechanisms through ceramic thin films and electrical characterization based on electric pulses are comprehensively reviewed.

  • 3D printing technology is a processing technology in which 3D structures are formed by fabricating multiple 2D layers of materials based on 3D designed digital data and stacking them layer by layer. Although layers are stacked using inkjet printing to release various materials, it is still rare for research to successfully form a product as an additive manufacture of multi-materials. In this study, dispersion conditions are optimized by adding a dispersant to an acrylic monomer suitable for inkjet printing using Co3O4 and Al2O3. 3D structures having continuous composition composed of a different ceramic material are manufactured by printing using two UV curable ceramic inks whose optimization is advanced. After the heat treatment, the produced structure is checked for the formation and color of the desired crystals by comparing the crystalline analysis according to the characteristics of each part of the structure with ceramic pigments made by solid phase synthesis method.

  • Zinc sulphide (ZnS) nanoparticles were fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis at $180^{\circ}C$ for 12 h. Two kinds of ZnS powder (hydrothermal synthesized ZnS and commercial ZnS) were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for phase and microstructure, respectively. The XRD patterns showed that all ZnS nanoparticles have a sphalerite (cubic) structure. The nanoparticles of two different ZnS powders were sintered by spark plasma sintering. The sintered ZnS were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and FT-IR. We found that the transmittance of the infrared region is highly dependent on the density and crystal structure of sintered ZnS and the purity of the starting ZnS powder.

  • Transparent ZnS ceramics were synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis ($180^{\circ}C$ for 70 h), and were sintered by a hot press process at $950^{\circ}C$. To confirm the optical properties of the ZnS ceramics after sintering for various sintering holding times, we performed X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform-infrared spectroscopy. The ZnS nanopowders was found to be single-phase (cubic) without any hexagonal phase. However, the hexagonal phase is formed and increases in content with increasing sintering holding time. The density of the ZnS ceramics was above 99.7%, except for the unsintered one. The ZnS ceramics showed high transmittance (~70%) when sintered for more than 2 h.

  • Active clay, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for humidity controlling ceramic boards. The specific area and the pore volume of active clay were higher than bentonite and zeolite. The flexible strength of the gypsum board decreased with an increasing amount of porous material, and the flexible strength was lowest when active clay with a higher specific surface area than others porous materials was added. The specific surface area and total pore volume of ceramic boards containing porous material were highest at $102.25m^2/g$, $0.142cm^3/g$, respectively, when the active clay was added. In addition, as the amount of added porous materials increased, the specific surface area and total pore volume of the ceramic board increased, but the average pore diameter decreased. The addition of s porous materials with a high specific area and a large pore volume improved the moisture absorptive and desorptive performance of the ceramic board. Therefore, in this experiment, the moisture absorptive and desorptive properties were the best when active clay was added. Furthermore, as the amount of added porous materials increased, the moisture absorptive and desorptive properties improved. When 70 mass% of active clay was added to ${\alpha}$-type gypsum, the hygroscopicity was the highest, about $300g/m^2$, in this experiment.

  • This study is conducted to evaluate the performance of ceramic panels and painting materials for humidity control which are developed in non-plastic room temperature hardening structure as part of a project to improve a residential environment for the low-income class, rather than the performance of high-priced humidity control materials that are produced with the existing plasticity processing. The testing methods included the measurements of absorption & desoprtion of humidity per material; Mock-up Testing; an evaluation method of comparing the absorption & desoprtion performances of Ecocarat, ceramic panels and painting materials through Living Lab. According to the measurements of absorption & desoprtion per material, ceramic panels, E panel, and ceramic painting material showed 73.3g/m2, 96.6g/m2, and 111.1g/m2, respectively. That is, the performance of humidity control of each material was found to be good in the order of: Ceramic Paint > E panel > Ceramic Panel. According to performance evaluation testing with Mock-up test and Living Lab, Ceramic Paint, Ecocarat, and Ceramic Panels showed better absorption & desoprtion performances in the order.
