Flow patterns were measured in a shrouded centrifugal impeller. The flow rate in measurements was fixed at the value corresponding to a nearly zero incidence at the blade inlet. By using a single slanted hot-wire probe and a Kiel probe mounted on the impeller hub disk, the 3-D relative velocities and the rotary stagnation pressures were measured in seven circumferential planes from the inlet to the outlet of impeller rotating at 700 rpm, and the static pressure distribution along flow passage and the slip factor at impeller outlet were calculated from the measured values. From these measured data, the primary and secondary flows, the wake production and the static pressure rise in the impeller passage were investigated. Furthermore, the secondary flow patterns and the wake's location in this impeller passage were compared with those of the unshrouded impeller.
The paper presents computational and flow visualization results on a centrifugal blood pump. 4 impeller designs were tested at a rotational speed of 2000 rpm using blood analog as working fluid. All impellers have seven blades but of different geometry (Impellers A3, A4, B2 and R7). Flow visualization within the impeller passages was conducted using an image de-rotation system. A pair of large scale vortices was found within the blades of impeller R7 while a single vortex was found in most of the passages of backward facing impellers (Impellers A3, A4 and B2). To establish the effects of blade geometry on blood cells, CFD was used to simulate the blade to blade flow to provide an estimate of the maximum shear stress. The results showed that though most of the stresses within the blade passages are below a threshold level of 150 N/m$^2$for extensive erythrocyte damage to occur, there are some regions near to the leading edge of the pressure side where the shear stresses a abode threshold level.
Operating excitation forces of the linear vibratory system are normally determined by direct measurement techniques using load cells, strain gauges, etc. But, hydraulic forces of the rotating turbomachinery such as centrifugal pumps are exerted on an impeller due to asymmety of the flow by the interaction between pump impeller and volute. So, investigations of wide range of hydraulic designs and geometric deviations are difficult by direct method. This paper presents a hybrid approach for fourier transformed operational excitation forces, which uses pseudo-inverse matrix of the transfer matrix for the system and the measured vibrational data with standard installed pump. The determination of the transfer function matrix is based on a linear rotor/stationary system and steady state harmonic response in finite element analysis. And, vibrational data is collected in both vertical and horizontal directions at inboard and outboard bearing housings. The results of the process may be enhanced by making acceleration measurements at many more locations than there are forces to be determined.
The effect of forging condition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 9Cr-1Mo heat-resisting steel was investigated. Microstructure of centrifugal casted 9Cr-1Mo heat resisting steel and forged heat resisting steel are consisted of martensite. With the increase of forging ratio, tensile strength and hardness increased, while elongation and impact value decreased. By increasing of forging starting temperature and finishing temperature, tensile strength and hardness increased, while elongation and impact value decreased. We obtained the optimum forging conditions as follow, forging ratio is 30%, forging starting temperature is $1200^{\circ}C$ and forging finishing temperature is $950^{\circ}C$.
This research presents an analytical model to characterize the ball bearing vibration due to the waviness in a rigid rotor supported by multi-row ball bearings considering centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment of ball. The effects of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment are introduced to the kinematic constraints and force equilibrium equations. The waviness of ball and races is modeled by the superposition of sinusoidal function and it is introduced to position vectors of race curvature center to use the Hertzian contact theory in order to calculate the elastic deflection and nonlinear contact force resulting from the waviness while the rotor has translational and angular motion. They can be determined by solving the nonlinear equations of motion with five degrees of freedom by using the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg algorithm. The accuracy of this research is validated by comparing with the results of the prior researches. It characterizes the vibration frequencies resulting from the various kinds of waviness in rolling elements, the harmonic frequencies resulting from the nonlinear load-deflection characteristics of ball bearing resulting from the waviness interaction.
This paper introduces a new parameter to design the $2{\times}2$ microfluidic centrifuge with single flow rotation positioned at the center of microchamber. The dimensional centrifugal acceleration momentum flux which is defined as the interfacial momentum flux divided by distance from the center of the chamber explains the flow rotation and its threshold provides a reference to expect single flow rotation. Through the numerical and experimental visualization of the flow rotation, the number and position of flow rotation in the $2{\times}2$ microfluidic centrifuge were examined. At a channel width of $50{\mu}m$ and chamber width of $250{\mu}m$, single flow rotation was obtained over at a Reynolds number of 300, while at a channel width of $100{\mu}m$ and chamber width of $500{\mu}m$, single flow rotation did not appear. The numerical analysis showed that the threshold centrifugal acceleration momentum flux to obtain single flow rotation was $3500kg/m{\cdot}s^2$.
Cross-clamping of the descending thoracic aorta results in proximal hypertension, increase in left ventricular afterload, and impairment of distal organ perfusion. Bypass of the descending thoracic aorta is frequently advocated as an adjunct for repair of traumatic tears and degenerative aneurysms. Many methods of bypass have been proposed to provide distal perfusion and reduce left ventricular afterload during cross-clamping of the thoracic aorta. At Seoul National University Hospital, 7 patients were treated for the thoracic or thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm using left atrium-femoral artery bypass with Bio-medicus centrifugal pump between October,1989, and January,1993. There were atherosclerotic thoracic aneurysm in 3 cases, thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm due to chronic aortic dissection in 3 cases, aortic rupture due to trauma in 1 case. Total of 7 patients were operated by graft replacement with reimplantation of important branches. None of these cases developed severe complications and hospital death. We believe that the Bio-Medicus centrifugal pump is a simple and safe means of perfusing the lower body, kidneys, and spinal cord without necessitating heparinization.
Effects of design variables on the performance of a double-inlet centrifugal blower have been analyzed based on the three-dimensional flow analysis. Two design variables, blade inlet and outlet angles, are introduced to enhance a blower performance. General analysis code, ANSYS-CFX13, is employed to analyze internal flow and a blower performance. SST turbulence model is employed to estimate the eddy viscosity. Throughout the shape optimization of an impeller at the design flow condition, the blower efficiency and pressure are successfully increased by 4.7 and 1.02 percent compared to reference one. It is noted that separated flow observed near cut-off region can be reduced by optimal design of blade angles, which results in stable flow pattern in the blade passage and increase of a blower performance. The stable flow at the impeller also makes good effects at the outlet of a volute casing.
We conducted a multi-stage optimization to secure the desired performance of a centrifugal fan for home appliance in an early stage of product development. In optimization, the static pressure at the outlet of the fan is chosen as an objective function that is to be maximized, providing the required flow rate at the operating point of the fan. The optimization procedure begins with parameters for an initial baseline fan design. The baseline design is optimized by using a commercial optimization package. Accordingly, the corresponding blade models with a set of geometrical parameters are generated. Flow through a fan is simulated by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. A multi-stage optimization scheme is employed to determine the family of optimum values for the parameters, leading to the pressure increase at the outlet of the fan. To validate the numerically obtained optimal design parameters, we fabricated the three types of fans using rapid prototyping and assessed the performance using a fan tester. Experimental results show that the design parameters at each stage satisfy the goal of optimization. The multi-stage optimization process turned out to be a useful tool in the development of a centrifugal fan.
A slip factor is defined as an empirical factor, which should be multiplied to theoretical energy transfer to estimate real work input of a centrifugal compressor. During the last century, researchers have tried to develop simple empirical models to predict the slip factor. However most of these models have been developed based only on design point data. Furthermore flow is assumed inviscid. As a result, these models often fail to predict the correct slip factor at off-design condition. In this study, various models for the slip factor were analysed and compared with experimental and numerical data at off-design conditions. As a result of this study, Wiesner's and Paeng and Chung's models are shown to be applicable for radial impeller, but all the models are found to be inappropriate for backswept impellers.
