The objective of a cathodic protection system (CP) is to protect the buried metallic structure against the corrosion caused by chemical reaction between the buried structure and the surrounding medium, such as soil. This paper presents a boundary element application to determine the optimal impressed current densities in a cathodic protection system. The potential within the electrolyte is described by the Laplace's equation with nonlinear boundary conditions which are enforced based on experimentally determined electrochemical polarization curves. The optimal impressed current densities are determined in order to minimize the power supply for protection. The solution is obtained by using the conjugate gradient method in which the governing equations and the protecting conditions are taken into account by the penalty function method. Numerical example are presented to demonstrate the practical applicability of the proposed method.
The effect of Co dopant on the (La, Sr)MnO3 cathode was investigated. La2Zr2O7 and SrZrO3 were formed as the reaction products between YSZ and LSMC. The reactivity of LSMC with YSZ increased with increasing Co content. However, the cathodic polarization resistance decreased with increasing Co doping. Therefore, doping Co at Mn site in the (La, Sr)MnO3 cathode was effective on controlling the polarization resistance of the cathode. The polarization property of LSMC-YSZ composite(60 wt%: 40 wt%) cathode was better than that of LSMC single cathode.
The corrosion behavior of Cr-N coated steels with different phases (${\alpha}-Cr$, CrN and $Cr_2N$) deposited by cathodic arc deposition on Hl3 steel was investigated in 3.5% NaCl solution at ambient temperature. Potentiodynamic polarization test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were the techniques applied to characterize the corrosion behavior. It was found that the CrN coating had a lower current density from potentiodynamic polarization test than others. The porosity, corresponding to the ratio of the polarization resistance of the uncoated and the coated substrate, was higher in the $Cr_2N$ coating than in the other Cr-N coated steels. EIS measurements showed, for the most of Cr-N coated steels, that the Bode plot presented two time constants. Also, the $Cr_2N$ coating represents the characteristic of Warburg behavior after 72hr of immersion. The coating morphologies were examined in planar view and cross-section by SEM analyses and the results were compared with those of the electrochemical measurement. The CrN coating had a dense, columnar grain-sized microstructure with minor intergranular porosity. From the above results, the CrN coating provided a better corrosion protection than the other Cr-N coated steels.
The purpose of this study is to observe the corrosion characteristcs of four dental amalgams(CAULK FINE CUT, CAULK SPHERICAL, DISPERSALLOY, TYTIN) and to determine a function of chloride concentration through the anodic polarization curve obtained by using a potentiostat. After each amalgam alloy and Hg being triturated, the triturated mass was inserted into the cylinderical metal mold, and condensed by hydrolic pressure. Each specimen was removed from the metal mold. 24 hours after condensation, specimens were polished with the emery paper and stored at room temperature for 6 months. The anodic polarization curves were employed to compare the corrosion behaviours of the amalgam m KCl and KCl-NaCl solution, which had chlonde concentration of 0.4 g/l, 0.8 g/l, 1.2 gil, and 1.6 gil at $37^{\circ}C$ with 3-electrode potentiostat. After the immersion of specimen in electrolyte for 1 hour, the potential scan was begun. The potential scan range was - 1500mV ~+800mV(vs. S.C.E.) in the working electrode and the scan rate was 50mV/sec. The results were as follows, 1. The corrosion potential. the potential of anodic current peak, and transpassive potential in the solution of high chloride concentration shifted to more cathodic direction than those in the solution of low concentration, and the current density in the solution of high chloride concentration was higher than that in the solution of low concentration. 2. The corrosion potential, the potential of anodic current peak, and transpassive potential for CAULK FINE CUT amalgam were the most cathodic among the others, and the current density were the highest among the others. 3. In the solution of low chloride concentration, the corrosion potential, the potential of anodic current peak, and transpassive potential for DISPERSALLOY were the most anodic among the others, however in the solution of high chloride concentration, those for TYTIN were the most anodic among the others. 4. The anodic polarization curve for CAULK SPHERICAL was similar to that for high copper amalgams.

The effects of additives on the Zn electrodeposition in chloride-based electrolyte were investigated using circulation cell with three electrodes system. The cathodic polarization increased with the addition of polyethylenglycol (hereafter PEG) in electrolyte. This was attributed to the adsorption of the additives on the electrode and the inhibition of migration of metal ion. The PEG, however, did not have any noticeable effect on the properties of plating solutions at the concentration used. The effect of PEG on the electrocrystallization was related to its molecular weight. With the increase of molecular weight, the cathodic polarization increased, while the surface roughness was improved with the decrease of brightness. Especially, the PEG mixed with different molecular weights was the most effective. The orientation and the type of the deposited grains were changed and refined by PEG, which resulted in the modification of deposited surface roughness and brightness.

This paper is a study on the prevention of crevice corrosion for a stainless steel heat exchanger in various pH solutions and with Cl ion concentrations. The electrochemical polarization test and crevice corrosion test of STS 304 for a heat exchanger were carried out. The crevice corrosion aspect, a passive behavior, crevice corrosion behavior, and corrosion protection characteristics of STS 304 using Al-alloy and Mg-alloy galvanic anode were considered. The main results are as follows: 1. The crevice corrosion of STS 304 occurs in the crevice and this corrosion increases pitting according to depth direction. On the other hand, the exterior crevice becomes passive. 2. With changing from a neutral to acid environment and increasing Cl ion concentration, the pitting potential of STS 304 lowers, and thus the crevice corrosion of STS 304 is sensitive. 3. The cathodic protection potential of STS 304 in the crevice is cathodically polarized by increasing Cl ion concentration. Therefore, an Al-alloy galvanic anode is more suitable than a Mg-alloy galvanic anode to protect the crevice corrosion of STS 304.
Corrosion resistance and torque of M10 bolt coated with Magni 565 were investigated. Corrosion protection mechanism were also studied with the microstructure of coating film. The bolts with the optimum conditions showed around $10{\mu}m$ layer thickness, a great corrosion resistance in salt spray test and a proper torque in torque/tension test. But torque coefficient k increased with the number of bolting and clamping force of M10 bolt showed significantly lower than that of specified value 28.3kN. It was thought that the repeated bolting made the coating film peel off and powdery. The sample coated with optimum coating conditions showed more higher polarization resistance and corrosion potential than the specimens of top and base coat only. The base coating film was composed of lamellar zinc flakes, which provides a large sacrificial cathodic protection. Meanwhile, the top coating film was composed of organic aluminium pigments layer, which provides barrier protection to the corrosion circumstances.

Chelating solutions can be damaged by strong acids during oil production. To design effective corrosion inhibitors and other alternatives for corrosion control, it is important to understand not only the behavior of the system under operating condition but also the kinetics of electrochemical reactions during the corrosion process. In this study, the electrochemical behaviors of P-110 steel in aqueous fluids based on ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) compounds under various temperatures and hydrodynamic regime conditions were assessed. Electrochemical measurements were conducted using rotating disc electrodes manufactured. Electrolytes were prepared using aqueous compounds of EDTA like diammonium salt, disodium salt, and tetrasodium salt. Potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance, and mass loss tests were performed in order to assess the corrosion kinetic in electrolytes. Hydrodynamic effects were observed only in the cathodic polarization curve. This proves that hydrodynamic regime plays an important role in the corrosion of steel mainly in disodium and diammonium EDTA solutions. Two cathodic reactions controlled the corrosion process. However, oxygen level and pH of the electrolyte played the most important role in metal corrosion. Corrosion rates in those fluids were decreased drastically when oxygen concentration was reduced.

Multilayered WC-Ti/suv $1-x/Al_{x}$ N coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel using cathodic arc deposition (CAD) method. These coatings contain structural defects such as pores or droplets. Thus, the substrate is not completely isolated from the corrosive environment. The growth defects (pores, pinholes) in the coatings are detrimental to corrosion resistance of the coatings used in severe corrosion environments. The localized corrosion behavior of the coatings was studied in deaerated 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution using electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization test) and surface analyses (GDOES, SEM, AES, TEM). The porosity was calculated from the result of potentiodynamic polarization test of the uncoated and coated specimens. The calculated porosity is higher in the $WC-Ti_{0.6}$$Al_{0.4}$ N than others, which is closely related to the packing factor. The positive effects of greater packing factor act on inhibiting the passage of the corrosive electrolyte to the substrate and lowering the localized corrosion kinetics. From the electrochemical tests and surface analyses, the major corrosion mechanisms can be classified into two basic categories: localized corrosion and galvanic corrosion.
A versatile method for performing non-cyanide electroless gold plating using thiomalic acid (TMA) as a complexing agent and 2-aminoethanethiol (AET) as a reducing agent was investigated. It was found that TMA was an excellent complexing agent for gold. It can be used in electroless gold plating baths at a neutral pH with a high solution stability, makes it a potential candidate to replace conventional toxic cyanide complex. It was found that one gold atomic ion could bind to two TMA molecules to form the [2TMA-Au+] complex in a solution. AET can be used as a reducing agent in electroless gold plating solutions. The highest current density was obtained at electrode rotation rate of 250 to 500 rpm based on anodic and cathodic polarization curves with the mixed potential theory. Increasing AET concentration, pH, and temperature significantly increased the anodic polarization current density and shifted the plating potential toward a more negative value. The optimal gold ion concentration to obtain the highest current density was 0.01 M. The cathodic current was higher at a lower pH and a higher temperature. The current density was inversely proportional to TMA concentration.
