  • This paper presents a mettled to reduce the number of conductors of catenary system for estimating line constants. Conductors of a catenary system are grouped and reduced. For example, the model representing the contact and the messenger conductors with a single equivalent conductor is. probably more realistic than assuming the two conductors completely separated, since they are generally connected by droppers every few meters. Therefore, this paper shows the method to reduce the number of conductors using electric circuit theory. To verify the results, we compared the equivalent line constants obtained by proposed method with those obtained by measurement.

  • The measurement of current collection performance between pantograph and contact wire of overhead catenary system is intended to prove the safety of operation and the quality of the current collection system. The results of interaction performance of current collection system are required for approving with commercial operation on railway lines. The methods of interaction performance of current collection system are defined on interactional standards such as IEC 62486 and EN 50317. In this paper, the interaction performance is evaluated by the percentage of arcing on Honam high-speed line and the results are used for adjustment of the overhead catenary line structure. The experimental results in Honam high-speed line confirm that the duration of an arc lasting longer 25 ms between pantograph and contact wire was depended on the conditions of overhead contact line after installation.

  • Under normal operating condition, the conductor of overhead transmission line could be always hold it's clearance within the safety margin that is specified in the line design guide of power company. Hence it may be very important to measure/or monitor the dip of the conductor, when building a new line, re-tensioning for an aged conductor, or monitoring dynamic line rating to maximize power capability. In this paper, we suggest a new method to estimate the dip and tension by catenary angle of the conductor. Since most conductors in overhead transmission lines show typical catenary curves, it can be uniquely determined the catenary curve for the conductor from the catenary angle at tower. Based on the catenary curve, the dip or horizontal tension can be easily estimated. Through some simulation and simple experimental results, it is verified that the suggested method can be effectively applied to measure/or monitor conductor dips and tensions in the overhead transmission lines.

  • Dynamic and static behaviors of a three-dimensional catenary system for a high-speed railway are analyzed by using the finite element method. Considering tensions in the contact wire and the messenger wire, we drive the equations of motion for the catenary system. These equations are for the longitudinal, transverse, vertical and torsional motions. After establishing the weak form, the weak forms are spatially discretized with newly defined two-node beam elements. With the discretized equations, a finite element computer program is developed for the static and dynamic analyses. The static deflections of the catenary system, which are important for good contact between the pantograph and the contact line, are computed when the gravity is applied. On the other hand, we analyze the natural frequencies and the corresponding natural modes of the catenary system. The dynamic responses of the system are also investigated when applying a load to the contact line. For verification of the developed finite element program, vibrations of the catenary system are measured and they are compared to computed time responses.

  • In this paper, we introduce the on-line test of the current collection characteristics for HSR 350x(Korea High Speed Train project) that have been performed in the Kyoung-bu high-speed line since 2002. Through the analysis of measured data during on-line test, the variation trend of contact force between pantograph and contact wire of catenary according to the span type, the track conditions and driving patterns is reviewed. In order to analyze the variation trend of contact force, we have checked the span type of catenary in KP 24 - 125 out of Kyoung-bu high speed line and obtained the statistical processing result per each span type. This study shows that the track conditions do not affect on the dynamic performance between pantograph and contact wire catenary, and the span type and the driving pattern are important factors in determining the good interaction between them.

  • Subject of the paper is a particular configuration of overhead line, in which noise barrier structure is used as supports of the catenary instead of standard poles. This configuration is foreseen in case the noise barrier position is in conflict with the poles location. If the catenary is supported by the noise barrier, the motion that the latter undergo due to wave pressure associated to train transit is transmitted to the overhead line, so that potentially it influences the interaction between the catenary itself and the pantograph of the passing train. The paper focuses on the influence of such peculiar configuration on the quality of the current collection of high speed pantograph, for single and double current collection. The study has been carried out first with an experimental investigation on the pressure distribution on noise barrier, both in wind tunnel and with in-field tests. Subsequently a numerical analysis of the dynamics of the barrier subjected to the wave pressure due to train transit has been carried out, and the output of such analysis has been used as input data for the simulation of the pantograph-dynamic interaction at different speeds and with front or rear pantograph in operation. Consideration of structural modifications was then highlighted, in order to reduce the influence on the contact loss percentage.

  • Along with the increase of railway catenary system operation speed to 400 km/h, there have been growing demands for good quality current collection systems that satisfy quality standards as well as criteria for safe working. Retaining uniform elasticity tension of contact wires is essential in maintaining high quality contact between pantograph and OCL (Overhead Contact Line) of current collection systems in high speed railways. Therefore, the tension of contact wire must be kept within tight tolerance limits in both working conditions and adverse weather conditions of catenary system. In accordance with these conditions, this paper presents a real time monitoring system for the tensioning device of the newly installed catenary system on the special route of Honam high speed line for 400 km/h operation. For the verification of the true value of tension of contact wires, we have developed ring-type tensioning sensors which were installed on supporting points of mast which compose the catenary system. According to the field test performed on the Honam high speed line catenary system, variation of tension was measured accurately in real-time.

  • The transition section of the overhead rigid conductor rail (ORCR) consists of a direct induction device and a limit point to prevent the power supply failure and failure of the electric railway vehicle pantograph due to the difference of the uplift in the catenary line. In T-Bar transition section, a twin simple catenary is mostly installed between the overhead catenary system (OCS) in the ground section and the ORCR in the underground section. In this paper, we compare and analyze the possibility of replacing the twin simple catenary with heavy simple catenary. The reliability of numerical analysis results was confirmed by comparing field test with numerical results. Comparing the numerical results of the twin simple catenary with the heavy simple catenary in the transition section, the difference uplift is 5.9[mm] on average. When applying heavy simple catenary instead of twin simple catenary, the slight difference of uplift can be compensated by adjusting the height of hanger-ear or support bracket.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that measures the height and stagger of an catenary using the laser profile images. One line laser and area scanner CCD cameras are used. To quickly and accurately extract, from a photographed image, the area of the overhead line on which the line laser is shone, we consider the established fact that the catenary is the lowest among the electric wires. Here we are solving the the distance to the catenary if we know the distance the camera is from the ground and the angle of the catenary in the field of view. The angle will be related to the number of pixels in the image. This pixels per degree is a constant for the camera. Also, because of the different pixel resolution of the camera according to the overhead line position, we compensate the measurement result through camera calibration.
