To predict catches of Pacific anchovy Engraulis japonicus larvae, anchovy eggs were collected in the coastal waters off Gunsan, Korea, in the Yellow Sea during the main spawning season (June to July) from 2003 to 2009. A ring net was repeatedly towed vertically at 10 stations during the daytime to sample eggs. Catch data estimated by auction sales were obtained from the Fisheries Cooperatives Union of Gunsan City and daily water temperature data in the outer harbor of Gunsan City during the survey periods were obtained from the National Oceanographic Research Institute. A significant relationship was found between anchovy egg density from June to July and larval catch from July to October in the same year. Catch of anchovy larvae in Gunsan were also high when optimal growth temperatures were recorded in the coastal waters off Gunsan in July. Although the recruitment success or failure of anchovy larvae can be predicted from variability in egg density, we suggest that mean daily water temperature is a more efficient indicator for predicting variability in catches of larval anchovy in the Yellow Sea.
A catch basin sump is one major habitat for mosquito larvae, especially in urban areas. This study developed a device for mosquito control, specifically for the catch basin sump. It consists of a housing, is a little smaller than the catch basin sump, numerous floating materials, which the key component for mosquito control, and mesh nets. The small balls or pyramid-shaped floating materials inhibit mosquito enclosures and spawning by significantly decreasing the surface area of the water, which is essential for the mosquito life cycle. These floating materials were designed to keep the water flowing. The mesh nets were installed to prevent the outflow of floating materials. The efficiency of the floating materials was tested with 3 conditions (1, 2, 3 layers of floating materials) and a control group. The emergence of mosquito adults decreased by 20% in one-layer, and 70-80% in second and third layers. Therefore, this device is expected to certainly contribute to mosquito population control in the catch basin sump.

We examined the characteristics of egg and larval distributions and catch changes of anchovy in relation to abnormally high sea temperature in the South Sea of Korea in summer 2015 and 2016. The densities of anchovy eggs and larvae in the southern coastal region were lower in July-August 2016 than in July-August 2015. In particular, anchovy eggs and larvae (approximately 5 mm TL) were rarely observed in the coastal region in August 2016 due to the abnormally high SST (up to $28^{\circ}C$), which was above the optimum spawning temperature of anchovy. The catch of non-swimming stage (< 2 cm TL) larval anchovy was lower in July-August 2016 than in July-August 2015. The decreased catch of larval anchovy in July-August 2016 could be attributed to decreased spawning density in June-July 2016. In contrast, the catch of swimming stage (> 2 cm TL) anchovy was increased in July-August 2016. In the summer of 2016, prominent sea temperature near the southern coast of Korea and sea temperature higher than $30^{\circ}C$ in the offshore region of the South Sea of Korea could greatly enhance the retention of swimming anchovies in the coastal fishing grounds.
Correction factors based on the catch ratios of egg and larval densities in the southern waters of Korea were estimated for anchovy Engraulis japonica. This was undertaken in order to adjust ichthyoplankton data from different sampling methods, gear types and time. Samples were collected during ichthyop1ankton surveys in Korean waters from 1983 to 1994. The ratios for egg densities obtained in vertical tows with a NORPAC net (ring $\Phi$, 45 cm) compared to those obtained in oblique tows with a KOB net (ring $\Phi$, 80 cm) were 0.86 (CV = 0.65), 1.22 (CV = 0.36), and 0.93 (CV = 0.42) for early, middle, and later developmental stages, respectively. The ratios for larval densities for vertical and oblique tows varied depending on size. For yolk-sac and small larvae (< 4 mm), the ratios were 3.08 (CV = 0.45) and 1.98 (CV = 1.34), while those of 4-6 mm, 6-8 mm, and 8-10 mm larvae were 0.44 (CV = 1.31), 0.45 (CV = 1.70), and 0.56 (CV = 2.50), respectively. Ratios of day/night densities for larvae of 4-10 mm lengths were lower (0.01-0.06) in offshore catches than values obtained in coastal areas (0.440.46) and similar values (0.16-0.04) for vertical and oblique tows. Our results indicated that vertical towing is more efficient for sampling early life stages (from eggs to larvae less than 4 mm long), while oblique towing is more efficient for larvae longer than 4 mm due to depth preferences for each developmental stage (e.g., changes in egg buoyancy and vertical migration oflarvae).

To determine the horizontal and temporal distribution of common squid larvae, Todarodes pacificus (hereafter T. pacificus), we conducted surveys using an IKMT net (mesh size: $500{\mu}m$) with a Fisheries Research Vessel (FRV, TAMGU 21) in the southwestern part of the East Sea in summer (August and September) and autumn (November) 2015. A total of 228 larvae, ranging in mantle length (ML) from 1.4 mm to 21.9 mm, were collected at 35 stations over the research period. The monthly average mantle length of T. pacificus larvae did not differ significantly in August, September and November. (p > 0.05). Catch densities at positive stations ranged between 0.1 and $7.9inds./1,000m^3$ over the research period. Incidence rates of T. pacificus larvae were similar over three months, in the study area (62.9 % - 68.6 %). The 4 - 5 mm mantle length range had the highest frequency in size-frequency distributions for T. pacificus larvae. The larval survival temperature ($15-24^{\circ}C$) at positive stations for catch densities was located below a 20 m depth in August whereas it was located at the surface of the water in September and November. The survival temperature for larvae existed from the bottom to the surface of the water where larvae were sampled larvae in shallow sea areas. However, the larval survival temperature occurred in a shallower location than the upper layer of the thermocline in deep sea areas at a depth below 100 m.
The oriental tobacco budworm, Helicoverpa assulta (Guenee) is a major pest of red pepper in Korea. Insecticide spray is a prevalent control tactic in most farms, but an effective control is difficult because the larvae are protected inside the fruit. Objective of this study was to investigate the seasonal occurrence of the male moths using pheromone trap and to evaluate the control efficacy of insecticide applications based on the trap catch data at red pepper fields in Suwon. The results of pheromone trap catch during three years showed that the moth flight activity occurred from late May to early October. Peak periods of the adult flight, which are indicators of each generation, occurred in late June, late July-early August, and late August-early September. Trap catches during the overwintering and first adult generation were closely linked with subsequent damage. Although the trap catch during the second generation was higher than the previous generations, damage level caused by this generation larvae was low. Experiment results revealed that fruit damage by H. assulta could be effectively reduced by five sprays of insecticides based on the trap catch data throughout the season.
To determine diel and seasonal variations in abundance and species composition of fishery resources, day and night samples were collected by a bag net from April through November 1997 off Kogunsan-gundo. A total of 75 species was collected. The total catch was consisted of 71% fish, 18% shrimps, 7% cephalopods and 4% crabs. Pholis fangi and Engraulis japonicus predominated, and accounted for 87% of the total number of fish collected. Most of them were larvae and juvniles. P. fangi and Ammodyres personatus occurred from April to June, and E. japonicus occurred from July to November, suggesting that they used the coastal areas as nursery ground at the different season to avoid competition. Dominant fish larvae and juveniles showed the significant diel difference in catch.

We decided the efficient application timings of organo-synthetic insecticides for controlling the first generation larvae of O. furnacalis through investigations of insect stage-specific densities, damage aspects in maize, and effects of insecticides. A waxy maize cultivar, Ilmichal, was cultivated from April 20 (sowing) to July 26 (harvest, dough stage of maize) in Suwon, 2016. The maximum and 50% cumulative catch dates of the overwintering generation adults in the sex pheromone trapping were May 29 and May 31, respectively. Most of the first generation larvae finished their occurrence till the early reproductive stage of maize. The first generation larvae fed on leaves inside the whorl leaves before tassel and stem development of maize, sequentially moved to tassel and stem, and then moved finally to stem and ear parts. In the results of insecticide applications at different dates, the 9-11 leaf stage (June 10~17) and the 6-7 leaf stage (June 3) of maize were the most efficient application timings for direct spray of Etofenprox EC to maize, and for application of Carbofuran granules onto soil surface, respectively, which resulted in suppression of tunnelling damages. The timings for the two insecticides were 12-19 days and 5 days after the adult maximum catch date, respectively. Those timings after the 50% cumulative adult catch date were advanced 2 days.

The ichthyoplanktons were sampled by Bongo net to study the distribution of the eggs and larvae in the West coastal waters of Korea during the study period (February, May, August and October of 2017). Collected fish eggs were divided into Engraulis japonicus and unidentified species. The most dominant species, Engraulis japonicus accounted for 79.52% of the total fish egg, which was followed by unidentified species (20.48%). The total of 36 taxa in fish larvae were identified based on morphological and molecular characteristics. Fish larvae were dominant by Gobiidae species. 48.30% of the total catch in abundance, which was followed by Engraulis japonicus (31.86%). These two taxa composed 80.16% of the total collected fish larvae. The seasonal diversity index of species from the collected fish larvae in the West coastal waters in 2017 was 0.625-1.883 and the evenness index was 0.380-0.865. In addition, dominance index was 0.618-0.920 and richness was 0.573-3.189.

Spatio-temporal distribution of eggs and larvae of Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonica in the southern sea of Korea was determined using data obtained from icthyoplanktonic surveys and oceanographic observations between Goheung Peninsula and Goeje Island from May to August 2007. Commercial anchovy catch and size composition from four local fishery cooperative associations were also analyzed in relation to the geographic distribution of eggs and larvae. The abundance of anchovy eggs increased from May to July and was lowest in August. Eggs were mainly distributed between Namhae Island and Goeje Island, where water temperatures were $15{\sim}24^{\circ}C$ and salinities were 32~35‰. In 2007 anchovy landings between Namhae Island and Goeje Island were 11,409 tons at Tongyeong association, 4,137 tons at Masan association, and 2,487 tons at Sacheon association. However, landings between Goheung and Yeosu Peninsula were only 4,411 tons (at Yeosu association). The catch by anchovy tow net was high in the area where eggs were abundantly distributed. This indicates that the distribution of egg density was directly correlated with recruitment of E. japonica. All growth stages were abundant in the study area, indicating that this area is a major spawning and growing ground of E. japonica in Korean waters.
