  • In this paper, we describe HW/SW co-optimizations for reconfigurable application specific instruction-set processors (ASIPs). Based on our previous very long instruction word (VLIW) ASIP, the proposed framework realizes various forward error-correction (FEC) algorithms for wireless communication systems. In order to enhance the energy efficiency, we newly introduce several design methodologies including high-radix algorithms, task-level out-of-order executions, and intensive resource allocations with loop-level rescheduling. The case study on the radix-4 turbo decoding shows that the proposed techniques improve the energy efficiency by 3.7 times compared to the previous architecture.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the current evaluation methods on faculty performance at Korean engineering colleges and develop teaching evaluation indicators for faculty performance. We investigated the faculty performance cases in engineering colleges inside and outside of the Korea, the engineering faculty's awareness of evaluation factors for their educational performance, and the appropriate ratios by indicating factors. Also we developed evaluation indicators for educational achievements to improve the current faculty performance system. 227 engineering faculty members answered our survey questionnaire. The result in the case study on faculty performance evaluation is as follows. First, most items of faculty performance evaluation are about quantitative indicators that can easily conduct objective evaluation. Second, evaluation items of faculty performance are mostly focused on instruction in a classroom. Third, the evaluation by students and administrative managers is more dominant than that by professors or their colleagues, document evaluation than on site evaluation, general evaluation than formative evaluation, and static evaluation than dynamic evaluation. Lastly, Some universities tend to substitute outstanding articles for underperforming instruction. The evaluation indicators that we have developed can be implemented by four types of subjects, such as students, professors, their colleagues, and deans. Also, based on the evaluation indicators, faculties can freely select their evaluation domains depending on the their tracks, such as a teaching track, a research track, or an industry-university cooperation track. The mandatory evaluation fields include teaching, student counselling, teaching portfolio evaluation by mentors or colleagues, class management evaluation by deans, and self-evaluation. The other areas are optional and professors can choose their evaluation factors.

  • This paper investigated the teaching and teaming of contents-related graphing in Korean secondary textbooks and suggested the improved methods of graph instruction through this analysis. reification-the case of function, In Harel, G., Dubinsky(Eds.), The Concept of Function : Aspects of Epistemology and Pedagogy Textbooks are analyzed from the viewpoint of the proportion of graphing contents, their sequencing, the proportion of each domain in graphing activities (interpretation vs. construction, quantitative vs. qualitative aspect, local vs. global aspect) and tasks (prediction, translation, scaling), and the difference in the graphing contents between the sixth and the seventh curriculum. This analysis demonstrates that graphing contents are increasing in textbooks, therefore the high school textbooks appear in almost every content area. The graphing activities concentrate on the construction, the quantitative aspects, and the local aspects, and are gradually focusing on the interpretation and global aspects of high school textbooks. Furthermore, most of graphing tasks favor translation. In contrast, the current seventh curriculum includes a balance of interpretation and construction activities and has more global aspects than the sixth curriculum based textbooks; however, the qualitative approach still rarely appears. For the graphing tasks, translation is still prevalent, but the importances of prediction tasks based on graph have increased in comparison with the sixth curriculum textbooks. Further, the seventh curriculum based textbooks are designed to stimulate more dynamic graphing instruction by introducing new tools such as graphing calculators and computer software. We suggest that the qualitative and global aspects should be emphasized in early graph instruction, a variety of graph activities in realistic contexts should be performed, and educational technology such as graphing calculator and computer can be efficient to implement these ideas.

  • With the rapid development of information and communication technology, a lot of multi-media learning programs are being developed and reported in the field of Emergency medicine both home and abroad. In this connection, this study was aimed at developing a foreign-body airway obstruction courseware in adults for EMT. The development period of CAI courseware lasted from May 2003 through November 2003. Among CAI courseware patterns, private instruction and repeat practice and simulation patterns were used as an instruction-learning strategy. The learning contents of the CAI courseware consisted of five chapters concerning (1) A relief of partial FBAO in the responsible victim, (2) A relief of complete FBAO in the responsible victim, (3) In case of unconsciousness in the responsible victim without removing all foreign body, (4) In case of consciousness in all victims after getting removed all foreign body and (5) A complete airway obstruction in victims without consciousness on the basis of assess responsiveness and the degree of airway obstruction. The way to use this courseware, with just a click on one specific chapter, was developed to proceed a course with progressive algorithm, a method of solving problems by choosing one between two situations. A characteristic of this CAI courseware is the enhanced efficiency of an instruction-learning method by providing an opportunity of choice based on situations in its effort to encourage learners to use a self-initiated learning method, not one-way method and to enhance problem solving skills among situations. Moreover, this courseware went through the diverse phases such as development, application, feedback in connection with learning process by practicing teachers, so that the courseware could be used frequently in the future. The contents of this courseware were written with the web, so that, if necessary, the contents could be continuously modified and complemented and handed out in the form of CD-ROM. This study indicates that the development of a variety of CAI courseware requires institutional and financial assistance and initiatives reflecting a reality in terms of learning process, technical assistance and resources.

  • Currently, reflective teaching has been actively studied in terms of teachers' professional development relating to classroom instruction. The present study looked at, using the method of a case study, the differences between a novice and an experienced elementary school mathematics teachers' beliefs demonstrated during their reflective teaching. The findings of the study show that at the intial stage of reflective teaching, the novice teacher identified few errors during class and was not enthusiastic about applying the results of her reflective teaching due to lack of confidence. By contrast, the experienced teacher identified more errors during class than the novice teacher and had fewer reflections due to a sense of confidence. As the teachers' engagement in reflective teaching increased with time, they both felt the need for advice from experts on mathematics teaching and directed their attention to interactions with their students away from teacher-centered instruction. Further, the novice teacher engaged in more teacher-student interactions than the experienced teacher, and the experienced teacher increased the frequency of teaching reflection. Based on the findings, the article suggests a number of implications for the cooperative reflective teaching between novice and experienced teachers and the improvement of classroom instruction.

  • To understand natural or social phenomena, we need various information, knowledge, and thought skills. In this context, mathematics and sciences provide us with excellent tools for that purpose. This explains the reasons why there is always significant emphasis on mathematics and sciences in school education; some of the general goals in school education today are to illustrate physical phenomena with mathematical tools based on scientific consideration, to encourage students understand the mathematical concepts implied in the phenomena, and provide them with ability to apply what they learned to the real world problems. For the mentioned goals, we extract six fundamental principles for the integrated mathematics and science education (IMSE) from literature review and suggest a instructional design model. This model forms a fundamental of a case study we performed to which the IMSE was applied and tested to collect insights for design and practice. The case study was done for 10 students (2 female students, 8 male ones) at a coeducational high school in Seoul, the first semester 2009. Educational tools including graphic calculator(Voyage200) and motion detector (CBR) were utilized in the class. The analysis result for the class show that the students have successfully developed various mathematical concepts including the rate of change, the instantaneous rate of change, and derivatives based on the physical concepts like velocity, accelerate, etc. In the class, they described the physical phenomena with mathematical expressions and understood the motion of objects based on the idea of derivatives. From this result, we conclude that the IMSE builds integrated knowledge for the students in a positive way.

  • This research presents a performance assessment system of which the purpose is to increase the effectiveness of the instruction and learning through the on-the-job superintendent of the instructor, the self-directed learning of the learner, and the interaction between instructors and students. The presented performance assessment system applies the problem-based situated learning of the web-based performance assessment to the production, the execution, the assessment, and the transmission of the test. For the effective administration and learning in the school, we applies the Problem-Based Learning of constructivism and the web-based situated learning of the learning community to the system design. The production of the web-based performance assessment shows that the problem-based and self-directed learning of the assessment are achieved through the web-based automatic production of the performance assessment, and the contextual learning by case-based learning is performed by the production of the template of the performance assessment.
