Western coastal ports of Korea experience severe tidal range with up to 9.7 meter between high and low tides. The significant water level variation implicates many operational difficulties during loading and un-loading from cargo ships. To overcome problems due to tide and to secure the continuous loading operation, a new loading system for container cargo called "container pallet system" is developed and introduced in the paper. Three types of structure forms, offshore structural deck, double bottom structural form and the mixed form, are inverstigated with MSC/NASTRAN software. The results prove that the mixed type structure with truss enforcement is found to be the most appropriate for the region.
Recently the importance of the cargo handling equipments in a port has been increasing to get strong competition from other ports. Many ports are making efforts to modernize their cargo handling equipments. The kernel technology of such equipments is the speed control of DC motor which is used as an essential part of them. In this paper, we discuss the speed control of a DC motor as a basic work for building cargo handling equipments in a port. DC Motors are still widely used in industrial fields, as driving power motor for electrical fields. DC drives, being easy to control, are widely used in many variable-speed and position control drive system. Traditional analog control circuits used in such applications have many disadvantages. Complex control schemes are difficult to implement with analog components. All these factor and invention of the microprocessor has made it possible to use digital control circuits, using microprocessing system. These digital circuits have been found to be reliable, flexible, and also immune to noise. In this paper it presents the speed control of a SCR DC motor driver which using dual converter by 80c196kc microprocessor. We developed a thyristor power amplifier which does not cause damage thyristor because it is designed to prevent triggering the two SCRs in the same arm simultaneously. And it was analyzed voltage and currents wave at reactive load.

This paper presents two different models of electrorheological(ER) valves which can be applicable to an automatic cargo handling system at the seaport. Four different ER fluids, which are commercially available, are adopted and their Bingham characteristics are experimentally evaluated with respect to the intensity of electric field. The field-dependent Bingham models are used in the design of two types of ER valves; single-type and divided-type. The governing equations of motion of the ER valves are derived and the principal design parameters are determined based on 200ton platform to be vertically controlled by the ER valves. Both pressure drops due to the applied field and current density required to operate the ER valves are analyzed. In addition, the pressure drops of the cylinder system are evaluated for both ER valves.
This work aims to : establish a model of the container physical distribution system of Pusan port comprising 4 sub-systems of a navigational system, on-dock cargo handling/transfer/storage system, off-dock CY system and an in-land transport system : examine the system regarding the cargo handling capability of the port and analyse the cost of the physical distribution system. The overall findings are as follows : Firstly in the navigational system, average tonnage of the ships visiting the Busan container terminal was 33,055 GRT in 1990. The distribution of the arrival intervals of the ships' arriving at BCTOC was exponential distribution of $Y=e^{-x/5.52}$ with 95% confidence, whereas that of the ships service time was Erlangian distribution(K=4) with 95% confidence, Ships' arrival and service pattern at the terminal, therefore, was Poisson Input Erlangian Service, and ships' average waiting times was 28.55 hours In this case 8berths were required for the arriving ships to wait less than one hour. Secondly an annual container through put that can be handled by the 9cranes at the terminal was found to be 683,000 TEU in case ships waiting time is one hour and 806,000 TEU in case ships waiting is 2 hours in-port transfer capability was 913,000 TEU when berth occupancy rate(9) was 0.5. This means that there was heavy congestion in the port when considering the fact that a total amount of 1,300,000 TEU was handled in the terminal in 1990. Thirdly when the cost of port congestion was not considered optimum cargo volume to be handled by a ship at a time was 235.7 VAN. When the ships' waiting time was set at 1 hour, optimum annual cargo handling capacity at the terminal was calculated to be 386,070 VAN(609,990 TEU), whereas when the ships' waiting time was set at 2 hours, it was calculated to be 467,738 VAN(739,027 TEU). Fourthly, when the cost of port congestion was considered optimum cargo volume to be handled by a ship at a time was 314.5 VAN. When the ships' waiting time was set at I hour optimum annual cargo handling capacity at the terminal was calculated to be 388.416(613.697 TEU), whereas when the ships' waiting time was set 2 hours, it was calculated to be 462,381 VAN(730,562 TEU).
The most important job in the container terminal area is to handle the cargo effectively in the limited time. To achieve this object, many strategies have been introduced and applied to. If we consider the automated container terminal, it is necessary that the cargo handling equipments are equipped with more intelligent control systems. From the middle of the 1990's, an automated rail-mounted gantry crane(RMGC) and rubber-tired gantry crane(RTG) have been developed and widely used to handle containers in the yards. Recently, in these cranes, the many equipments like CCD cameras and sensors are mounted to cope with the automated terminal environment. In this paper, we try to support the development of more intelligent automated cranes which make the cargo handling be performed effectively in the yards. For this plant, the modelling, tracking control, anti-sway system design, skew motion suppressing and complicated motion control and suppressing problems must be considered. Especially, in this paper, the system modelling and tracking control approach are discussed. And, we design the tracking control system incorporating an observer based on the 2DOF servo system design approach to obtain the desired state informations. In the case of observer design, a weighted $H_{\infty}$ error bound approach for a state estimator is considered. Based on an algebraic Riccati equation(inequality) approach, a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a full-order estimator which satisfies the weighted $H_{\infty}$ error bound is introduced. Where, the condition for existence of the estimator is denoted by a Linear Matrix Inequality(LMI) which gives an optimized solution and observer gain. Based on this result, we apply it to the tracking control system design for the transfer crane.
By the rapid expansion of containerization and intermodal transportation in international shipping since the 1970's, the larger containerships have emerged and concentrated their calls at a limited number of ports. Moreover, large-scale container terminals have been built to accommodate the ever-larger containerships, and the mordernization of terminal facilities and many developments in information technology etc. have been brought out. Thus, unlimited competition has been imposed on every terminal with neighbouring ports in Japan, Singapore, Hongkong and Taiwan etc. The purpose of this study is to suggest how the container terminal operators cope with unlimited competition between local or foreign terminals. The results are suggested as follows: First, transshipment cargoes, which the added value is high, is to be induced. Second, the function of storage is given on On-Dock Yard. Third, Berth Pool Operation System is to be introduced, especially in Gamman Container Terminal and Kwangyang Container Terminal. Fourth, the cargo handling charges is to be decided by terminal operator.
As far as ship's cargo handling devicesareconcerned, the derrick system has been used comprehensively in the marine. Even though there are several new devices for ship's cargo gear, such as gantry crane, jib crane adn self unloader, the derrick system, with its improved rigging method, still retains its utmost reputations among ship's owners. Therefore the method of calculating the system's militating stresses in the course of cargo operation needs to be more convenient and analytical. Here the author attempts to introduce the calculating method of stresses by means of vector analysis. The calculating method is able to analyze the stresses acting in every part of the cargo gear systems, such as union purchase, slewing or its modified system.

This study is to define the Automated Container Terminal(ACT) and container terminal system. Also, we analyze the present condition of the container terminal system in Pusan port and its automation level by systems approach. And this paper aims at evaluating on the priority of R&D investment until the beginning of the second stage of New Pusan Port Project(2006). In this process we have considered 8 factors (cost, labor, area, time volume, reliability, safety, convenience) to analyze 6 subsystems. The priority order of R&D until target year by sub-systems is as follow : Cargo Handling System〉Transfer System〉Port Entry System〉Storage System(Distribution&Manufacturing System included)〉Inland Transport System〉Port Information System.
A Container terminal is a physical link between the ocean and land modes of transport and a major component of the container physical distribution system. A number of projects to increase terminal productivity in the world were found to be tied directly to increasing the efficiency of the intermodal activities, that is, to improving the physical distribution process. This is an indication that the productivity of container terminal is being considered withing a system prospective. The purpose of this study is to establish a model of the container physical distribution system for Pusan port linked with 4 sub-systems including Navigational aids system, Cargo handling/transfer/storage system on dock, Off-dock CY system and In-land transport connection system. and to analyze the system. From this analysis, we found that the system had three bottlenecks on the container physical distribution process in Pusan port : a) cargo handling b) storage and c) inland transport, and showed a way to improve the system.

A port has been regarded as a significant contributor to air pollution in the surrounding areas. Port-related air pollutants are released from not only marine vessels, but also various land-side sources at ports, which include cargo handling equipment, vehicles, locomotives, and fugitive dust sources by port activities such as bulk handling and vehicle movements. However, most studies in Korea have only focused on vessel emissions and there is a lack of information on the emissions from other sources at port. In this study, in order to establish the port-related emission inventory and evaluate the relative contribution of these sources to air emissions from the Port of Incheon, the emissions from land-side sources were estimated and the CAPSS (Clean Air Policy Support System) data for vessel emissions were used. In particular, the detailed information and activity data for the cargo handling equipment source were collected and the emission factors and emissions by equipment types were calculated using U.S. EPA methodologies. Total HC, CO, $NO_x$, $PM_{10}$, and $SO_2$ emissions from port-related sources including the vessel in 2007 were calculated as 229 ton/year, 638 ton/year, 4,861 ton/year, 307 ton/year, and 3,995 ton/year, respectively. It was found that the vessel was the largest contributor to air pollutant emissions from the port, the cargo handling equipment was responsible for about from 8% to 13% of HC, CO, and $NO_x$ emissions and the resuspended road dust contributed about 39% for $PM_{10}$ emissions. The results of this study will be used to establish the management and reduction strategies of air pollution in the port.
